FDI enjoyed a lot of attention in 2012 and it even went on to becoming oppositions muscle power to pull the rug from under the governments feet. So, what was the hullabaloo all about? As far as the Indian economy is concerned, it simply means that we have not only opened our gates to foreigners, but also a right to holding a majority share in the Indian industries. So how will that affect the Indian IT scenario, you ask? Well, the Government did open multi-brand retail to foreign direct investment (FDI), but the freedom has been limited to traditional brick-and-mortar stores. Virtual stores and online e-commerce platforms are still FDIs step brothers. Department of Industrial Policy and Promotions (DIPP) says that foreign firms can just be a listing platform for brands but foreign firms that buy and sell any goods or services are still banned from conducting their activities. Till now, e-commerce companies have used the loophole of multi-tiered structuring, engaging only in B2B ecommerce and not in retail trading. For a consumer it translates to as -though Walmart is welcome to invest in India, its online arm still would face regulatory hurdles. It also means that eBay is allowed to operate lawfully but not Amazon, as it is a buyer and seller. The only reasonable reason which is-maybe Governments has a social intent. It perhaps does not want to give a leeway to online firms as e-commerce companies would not be developing any back end infrastructure. DIPP does say that e-commerce firms can invest in warehousing and back end infrastructure, which allows 100 per cent FDI. According to independent research firm Forrester, In 2011, venture capitalists invested $ 177 million in eCommerce in India.

FDI in IT Sector: Effect on Indian Economy

Not only this, they also concluded that total e-commerce revenue in India is expected to increase by more than five times by 2016, i.e. from $1.6 billion in 2012 to $8.8 billion in 2016. Flipkart has more than 49 per cent direct or indirect foreign investment, so does Jabong. Myntra and Policybazaar have a sizable investment through VC funding, Yashish Dahiya, Chief Executive Officer, Policybazaar.com, said. So it will be safe to conclude with a quote from Business Line analysts who say that e-commerce companies with FDI infusion have created corporate structures which technically enable them to receive FDI infusion even while sticking to the regulatory guidelines.

APPLE BEATS MICROSOFTS MARKET VALUE RECORD

In 1999, during the dot-com boom, when anything connected to the internet was considered to be touched by Midass hand, Microsoft achieved a record breaking market value of $620.58 billion during the internet boom. Buoyed by the high profit scenario, lots of other computing and internet based companies also launched their IPOs but with the busting of dot-com bubble, most of them saw a fall in their market value. Microsoft held its market value record for almost 10 years till Apple, which is considered to be Microsofts biggest rival, broke Microsofts market value record. Today, Microsoft's market value has gone down to $257 billion as compared to Apple's market value at a whopping $624 billion. Apples stock surged up to $665.15 a share and eclipsed Microsoft's record, technically making Apple the most valuable company of all time. While Apple's stock was down for much of 2012, its price has gone up with the launch of much-awaited Apple iPhone 5 in midSeptember. The anticipation of the launch of the 7-inch- iPad also has a hand in the increase of Apples stock prices. US mobile provider AT&T said that it set a sales record with Apple's iPhone 5 over the weekend, making it the fastest-selling iPhone the company has ever offered. The carrier claimed on Monday that customers had ordered more iPhones from AT&T than any previous model both on its first day of preorders and over the weekend. As the day preorders began, Apple's initial stocks finished within a few hours and the shipping time for the ordered device was extended to October instead of a week. Few buyers have already started lining up in front of the company's store on New York's 5th Avenue a week in advance even though the product was available in stores. It has been said that Apple received over 2 million advance bookings for iPhone 5 within the first 24 hours of pre-orders. This is double the number of pre-bookings the company received for the iPhone 4S last year. Apple is expecting to sell approximately 10 million units of the iPhone 5 in September, the number for which Samsung's flagship Galaxy S III had to wait for two months. Even though Apple has become the most valuable business in the history, some financial analysts believe that Apple's stock price could go higher and have set their expectation for Apple's stock at $745.80. Engineered BI System introduced in Oracle

Lenovo to buy cloud computing firm Stoneware

Chinese computer giant Lenovo claims to be in the process of buying a US software company Stoneware- a 67 employee firm, to mark an inception in the growing field of cloud computing. Even though Lenovo did not disclose the amount, it did say that the acquisition would not affect its earnings.

Apple Maps on iOS6 leaves users lost with geographical errors

Apple's new Map application has been widely criticized by users across the globe for lacking the same level of detail as the rival offering from Google, The release of iOS 6 was immediately followed by users complaining about the new maps, which lack a significant amount of detail and omit public transit directions. Access to highquality maps is a critical feature for modern smart phones, and Apple's decision to swap out Google Maps is a rare example of the company openly placing its own interests above those of its customers. Ultimately Apple created this problem for itself. Thus criticism says that Apple's new iPhone 5 and OS feel like iterative updates to previous products. "IOS 6 is mostly about Apple they wanted to get Google off their phone, The real question is whether these victories for Apple are victories for its customers.

Oracle just introduced Oracle Exalytics to provide performance and scalability with reduced deployment complexity and lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). This is the first engineered system that would help deliver high performance analysis, modeling and planning. Oracle Exalytics would therefore assist people with their projects involved in Reporting along with scenario modeling and planning and forecasting in a single environment. Oracle Exalytics can access and analyze data from Oracle or third-party data sources including IBM DB2, Netezza, Microsoft SQL Server, SAP BW, Sybase ASE, and Teradata Warehouse. This would prove to be a boon as the demand for high performance analytics is expected to accelerate further especially in data intensive industries. Christalene Soans Sec B, 2014 batch

Lenovo said it was buying Stoneware to enhance and expand in to the cloud computing business. Cloud Computing is a new term and technology and is used for storage of documents and software applications at remote data centers while allowing users to access them through smartphones, tablet computers, laptops and other Internet-connected devices. The purchase process is expected to be completed by the end of 2012. Dhaval Joshi 2014 Batch, Sect. N

Digital Marketing: Revolutionizing the World

At its heart, digital marketing revolves around the internet, which has become both a communication channel and a very powerful marketing medium. The internet can be used both to push a message to someone through email as well as to pull content serving a banner ad and Pay Per Click search terms. In the late 1990's businesses didnt realize the value of website but then very quickly businesses realized that online presence was a must. And then came the email marketing, as one of the best way to promote your business. It has got nothing to do with your type of business, whether you have business related to bricks or online business. It is simple and quick to use, and it can help you reach an unprecedented number of potential customers while staying in touch with current customers. Its really easy, cheap, and fast and draws more web traffic than any other media. No doubt sometimes its annoying but if you have great website, you can allow people to sign up for your email newsletters. But before you go for Email Marketing just make sure that you hire professional web marketers who will be able to help you make your campaign more successful and since it is digital one can easily come to know how the campaign is performing. One should be aware of the fact that there are various types of digital marketing techniques like email, RSS, voice broadcast, fax broadcast, blogging, podcasting, video streams, wireless text messaging, and instant messaging, and all cannot provide the same type of report. Also, digital marketing is constantly evolving and new technologies are being created all of the time. Broadband Internet, WiFi and cell phone GPRS are also spurring growth worldwide. A recent report showed that Web usage increased 10% from last January to this January globally. Not surprisingly, millions of money spent on traditional channels is already starting to shift to digital marketing campaigns and this will continue to increase as the Web matures. As a PGPM student, I am very excited about the future and what digital marketing will look like in the years ahead. I mean, we just got to Web 2.0 so who knows what will be coming next? If one has not yet started, all he/she needs to do is to build a database of customers or potential customers and find out how they wish to be reached. You can do this through the digital marketing technologies Ive mentioned in this article and then use these systems to market your products and services. Make sure you are ready to take full advantage of digital marketing and watch your revenues soar.

All Hail TCS

TCS is has become the new ace in IT, and is consistently proving itself to be the master of all trades. TCS started getting noticed all over when this year on the 12th of July, it replaced Infosys as Indias IT bellwether. Since then, the company has seen only a few dips in its stock waves, but has managed to hold its head high in the NSE and BSE, despite the highly volatile rupee-dollar scenario. The Infosys-TCS results were something of a never-before phenomenon and it was watched very narrowly as Indias IT sector employs more than two million people and hence plays a major role in Indias broader economy. Another development which made waves for TCS in the highly unstable Indian economy, was in August 2012, when the share price of Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) lost its position as country's most valued company to TCS. This happened when RIL stock prices fell by 1.68 per cent to Rs 794.45, the company's market value also slipped to Rs 2,57,111 crore below Tata Consultancy Services' Rs 2,58,578 crore. TCS had therefore has attained its well deserved throne as the country's largest company in terms of market share. TCS continues to grow as it beat the streets expectations with 38 percent revenue growth.

TCS: Going Places

In a new development which goes on to giving high hopes for TCSs future and shows sound planning behind its every move TCS plans to move to a 7 lakh sq feet new facility in Kolkata which would accommodate over 7000 workstations housing over 15000 employees, in order to consolidate all the operations in one place. This attempt is made in order to get the workforce working together from a single place rather than being diversified in different places within the city, thus improving work efficiency and better productivity. TCS has also opened its 50,000 sq feet Solution Center in Minneapolis, US - having roughly around 300 employees that would deliver technology services as an integral part of TCS Global Network Delivery Model. N.Chandrasekaran, CEO and MD-TCS stated - "The decision to open a new TCS facility in the Minneapolis region is part of our company's on-going commitment to grow our presence in each and every market we serve". This new center would enhance customerofferings scope in North America. TCS now has a total of 18 offices across the USA and continues expansion in-spite of the economic slowdown.

Modern Aspect of Social Networking

Social networking sites offer people with not only new and varied ways to communicate via the internet, whether through their PC or their mobile phone, but also fun and easy leisure activities. They allow people to easily and simply create their own online page or profile and to construct and display an online network of contacts, often called friends. Users of these sites can communicate via their profile both with their friends and with people outside their list of contacts. This can be on a one-to-one basis (much like an email), or in a more public way such as a comment posted for all to see. But technology alone doesn't change, what changes is people's behaviour and that's where social media advances. In the early stage social media was basically just a medium to stay in touch with friends and people of the same community, then it become a media to chat with loved ones after the implementation of chat box. There after it become a platform to share news and information and to play games and using modern world application either for fun or to make social things easy like apps for events and birthday calendar. At present time social media has become a part for marketing, advertising and selling things online to make marketing easy. If a user finds social networking sites to be a good source for information and knowledge, social networking can shed their reputation of being just a leisure pleasure. An analysis of the features of social networking sites reveals that there are various advantages and disadvantages of social networking. Possible advantages: Facilitates open communication, leading to enhanced information discovery and delivery. Allows employees to discuss ideas, post news, ask questions and share links. Provides an opportunity to widen business contacts. Targets a wide audience, making it a useful and effective recruitment tool. Improves business reputation and client base with minimal use of advertising. Expands market research, implements marketing campaigns, delivers communications and directs interested people to specific web sites. Possible disadvantages:
Decreased Productivity

One reason why organizations or even institutions like our very own college, does not allow social networking sites access in the workplace is the fact that employees or students spend a great deal of time updating their profiles and sites throughout the day. If every employee in a 50-strong workforce spent 30 minutes on a social networking site every day, that would work out to a loss of 6,500 hours of productivity in one year!
Infromation misuse

Increases the risk of people falling prey to online scams that seem genuine, resulting in data or identity theft.
Resources

Although updates from sites like Facebook or LinkedIn may not take up huge amounts of bandwidth, the availability of (bandwidth-hungry) video links posted on these sites creates problems for IT administrators. There is a cost to Internet browsing, especially when high levels of bandwidth are required.
Viruses and Malware

This threat is often overlooked by organizations. Hackers are attracted to social networking sites because they see the potential to commit fraud and launch spam and malware attacks. There are more than 50,000 applications available for Facebook (according to the company) and while Facebook may make every effort to provide protection against malware, these third-party applications may not all be safe.

Why FB overshadowed Orkut..??

you

remember

ORKUT?

Even

though

ORKUT had the first mover advantage in social networking sites but now Facebook (FB) has almost colonized Europe and its extending its domination with more than 200 millions users. The dominance of FB can be firstly associated to its cleanliness, as it comes with a user interface that is simple, nicely bifurcated and professional which makes it a delight for even the first time user to understand and use. In order to compete with FB, ORKUT recently released theme library option using that a user can change the background theme of his/ her profile, but with that feature comes sluggish speed and sluggier performance. Games and Quizzes are another nail in the coffin for ORKUT. The games build their own loyalty and keep the users coming back for more. As atleast 200 Million people know, Farmville has been one of the biggest reasons why people logged in to FB but since the programmers sitting behind the desks at ORKUT have been sipping away on their lemonades, hence ORKUT lacks many features as compared to FB. If there are stil l some humans working on ORKUT, they need to introduce new games and quizzes which users can play and highlight their scores on their profiles, which in turn will make not only the user, but also ORKUT popular, as a social networking site. FB wins hands down with Causes and the like button feature.

Superior photo uploading technology makes it a narcissists dream but one of the more annoying things on ORKUT was Bad Bad Server, no donut for you! dialogue, which most of the user dont like and Google does not refrain from displaying. Another no-contest contest was on the security features. On FB one is able to view the profile of others only when the latter is among your connections as compared to ORKUT wherein you can view peoples profiles details, communities joined, photos, friends, etc regardless if they are a friend or not. Open scraps and profiles lead people to believing t hat there is not enough security of their the security feature contest.

Despite the fact that ORKUT was ahead of FB in the beginning but as it failed to provide new or attractive features or come up a competition for the various updated apps that FB provides - FB has more than 10,000 applications (Apps), ORKUT is nothing more than a faded memory now. Some of the applications and elements making FB a fun and the ultimate leader in the internet social networking race are as follow: FB events is an application that helps the user inform the people in the network know about the upcoming events in their group and to organize social gatherings. The application named as myORKUT connects the ORKUT profile of the user to FB profile, so that one can see his/ her ORKUT friends and read scraps right from FB without actually logging into their ORKUT account. The most recent and the last change on the FB website was URL Change. The user is able to direct others to their page through a simple link such as www.facebook.com/username rather than an otherwise complex URL. FBs Mini Feed Feature (notifications) is useful in viewing a quick snapshot on the latest happenings within the network.

LOVE Bigger Screen 4G capability Better Camera HATE Battery life still not great Maps do not show major landmarks

HTC Windows Phone 8X

LOVE Windows 8 Front Facing 2.1 mp camera Full HD Video HATE No Radio No external card slot

Build At 112g, its 20% daintier than the iPhone 4S, 16% less butch than the Samsung Galaxy S3 and 14% lighter than the HTC One X. Reducing the SIM to nano, size has helped, minutely, as has making the shell out of anodised aluminium. Features It now features a 4 inch screen, having the same width. Camera now supports panorama shoot. Retina Display with a resolution of 1136*640. 4G LTE support added. Features IOS 6. It also features A6 chip which they claim to be 2X faster. Performance Everything feels slightly slicker when navigating the phone. Apps appear to load quicker, video feels a touch smoother, video and image processing is definitely faster. With the improved A6 processor now powering the visuals, our finger points straight at it, but its with new apps that well really see the power of the chip take hold. Camera The rear iSight camera remains impressive, taking great pictures in bright conditions. Theres a bigger virtual camera capture button and video stabilisation seems to have improved. The major improvement is with the front camera, which has been upgraded to 720p video, making FaceTime and Skype chats much clearer. Still shots are captured at 1.2MP iOS 6 The iPhone 5 comes with iOS 6 as standard. Flyover, turn-by-turn navigation, Passbook, PhotoStream sharing, FaceTime over cellular, VIP Mailboxes, Facebook integration, Do Not Disturb, improved Siri, pre-determined text replies to phone calls, the list goes on.

Build There's no denying that the HTC 8X is very nice looking phone indeed. It may remind you a little of the Nokia Lumia 900 and the newer Lumia 920 as it's been designed to reflect the tile- based, colourful look of the Windows Phone OS. The tapered edges make it look and feel slimmer than it actually is, while the slick finish gives it the feel of a premium handset. Features The 8X comes with an 8MP rear snapper and a front- facing 2.1MP cam and the option for 1080p video capture on both. The phone has a 16GB built-in memory, which may sound a little on the smaller side to some, 8X also features NFC, unlike the new iPhone 5. Screen The 8X sports a 4.3-inch screen. The 720p 1280x720 resolution offers 341 ppi which is decent enough, but not quite up there with the iPhone 5's Retina display. Performance The 8X is powered by a 1.5GHz Qualcomm S4 dual-core processor. The performance is quiet impressive with the dual core processor and 1 GB RAM. Verdict The overall design shows that the brand is innovating in terms of aesthetics something that Apple seems to have slowed down on with the iPhone 5. The spec lineup is also strong - particularly the camera tech from the One range, along with the improved Beats technology.

While at the New Orleans International airport having lunch with a client at the Airport restaurant, a southern businessman notices Bill Gates sitting at the counter. When his client goes to the restroom, he approaches Bill Gates, introduces himself and says, "Look, I know you don't know me, but I am trying hard to impress this client. It would really help me out if on your way out of here if you could just say, Hi Jim, to me as you pass. I sure would appreciate it." Bill smiles, and says sure, no problem. So about 15 minutes later as Bill leaves, he decides he is really going to do this big, so he walks up to the 2 men and pats Jim on the back and says, "Hey Jim, really good to see you old buddy, we really have to get together again, hows the wife and kids?" Jim stands up and looks harshly at Bill Gates and loudly says, "Geeze Bill, do you mind?!? Can't you see I'm meeting with a client right now?! Look, if you want another meeting with me, call my office and set up an appointment like everyone else"
