Trouble: I have recently jailbroken an iPhone I got from AT&T USA and brought it to India. In India I inserted an AirTel SIM in my Apple iPhone but the GPRS was not working. The GPRS settings are generally found in Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data Network screen as seen below
But this option was missing on my iPhone 3GS. This was missing because the apple restricts the settings editing from user. In this article I will share three methods of changing the GPRS APN settings when the option is missing. Fix: There are three methods, one through browser, one through a cydia app and other through file editing. I will explain all three in this article.
First of all, find your manual GPRS settings from your service provider or carrier. You can also find Free GPRS settings for India here.
Change iPhone APN Settings Through Safari Browser [Quick and Easy Way]
1. Connect your iPhone to some wifi/wireless network which can give your iPhone Internet access. 2. From your iPhone Safari browser, open the website : unlockit.co.nz and click Continue

3. Click on Custom APN
4. Type the APN settings for your carrier, in my case, it was airtelgprs.comand click on create profile.
5. Save the profile and re-start your iPhone. Your phone should now be working with the GPRS settings.

Enable Cellular Data Network Settings On iPhone Using APN Editing App
For this you can download the app called APN Editing
This app should work on iPhone 2G/3G, not sure of 3GS, because it did not install on my 3GS. If this application installs on your phone, its good, else see the method below.
Enable Cellular Data Network Settings Though File Editing [Geek Method]
1. Download and Install OpenSSH app from Cedia
2. Download and Install WinSCP client for Windows. Run the client and connect to your iPhone using SFTP over the wifi network. The Host Name will be IP address visible in Settings > General > Wifi > <Network Name> username will be root password will be alpine for iPhone 3Gs

3. Browse to the following location on the WinSCP client /System/Library/Carrier Bundles/<carrier name> and copy the carrier.plist file from this folder. carrier name is the folder name that depends on which carrier you are using. For example, in my case, it was Airtel India, so the path is: /System/Library/Carrier Bundles/BhartiAirtel_in.bundle
4. Download and run pledit software and open the file carrier.plist downloaded in above step with pledit editor and paste the following code just after the <dict> tag in this file: <key>AllowEDGEEditing</key> <true/>
Save the file after making changes as seen below.

5. Copy the Saved file back to the same folder in the iPhone. Restart the iPhone and the settings will be enabled.
After all this research, I got my GPRS working, see the proof below

Theres this iPhone Configuration utility as well for both Mac n win. by that also u can create a profile in which you can add proxies n port no. But still no luck.. The AllowAPNeditting is also enabled.. I get E on top left all the time, but cannot access internet on my iPhone.. is there nething else we have to do to somehow activate GPRS usage in iPhone 2G ?

I live in thailand and used AIS 12call.

Initially to access vodafones GPRS . i created an APN using the iphone cong utilty by following the procedure mention on this link http://broadbandforum.in/vodafone-iniphone-worked/ initially all was well and i could access the GPRS service but after installing push fix for youtube via cydia , the APN comes up as unsigned and cannot be removed via iphone config utilty as well. i have lost my gprs connection too. can anyone please provide instructions on how to get this unsigned APN issue resolved. I also tried unlockit.co.nz to install a new APN but I need to remove this unsigned APN first . the config utilty does not allow me to remove or install a new APN . do u knowhow do i remove this unsigned APN

mohammd jashim March 13, 2010 at 9:13 pm hi i went and asked airtel guys regarding my gprs settings in dumlur(bangalore) branch they tried to configure but they dint and that airtel officier said you goto coromangala for configure i went there also he said there is no apn in your mobile , so i cant he said . finally he given one number , that guy working in another airtel showroom in sivaji nagar near indian express , he also did something and he said sir your iphone was not properly jailboken , it has to be jailbroken properly . he said for that they will charge . finally i lost my amount , by spending it for bus etc . and i found exact anwser from this site i am saying thousand thanks to person who published it .. buy iphone in mobile store instead buying it airtel showroom , because the difference is almost 10 k .

Rohit March 26, 2010 at 2:21 pm @Dinesh You need to call the customer care of Vodafone, get the correct APN settings and need to confirm that your data plan is active or not. This error comes usually when either APN is wrong, or Data Plan not activated on connection or both.

@Kevin If the profile there does not work, use the manual method, create a profile using the APN settings and use it. It works with my carrier here in India. I did it using manual APN settings. Hope it helps.

Did you manage to find the settings for Tata Docomo internet to work on the iPhone? The reason I am asking is cause where I live in Mumbai (Shivaji Park, Dadar), the signal reception for Airtel and Vodafone is weak. At least that is what my mother told me this week. When I was in India a few months ago, Airtel was working fine but Vodafone was weak. Now both companies have weak reception. Tata Docomo is working fine in my area now so I was planning on getting Docomo if the internet would work on the iPhone. Do you have the settings for Docomo? Thanks for all the help. Vish

Rohit July 14, 2010 at 11:45 am @Ajay seems like MTNL 3G doesnt work with iPhone, some compatibility issue or something, however, it works on Nexus one Android platform as we have tested it on both these phones.

Hi Rohit The solutions are really interesting in particular third. In my case none of them did work. My phone is iPhone4 from US AT&T. I have jailbroken and unlocked the phone. Once I installed APN using unlockit.nz.co. When the GPRS was not working I had uninstalled. But when I try to install again after your note it gives an error. I tried second method and that also gives an error. Finally I tried third successfully. But unfortunately still GPRS is not working. Can you suggest me how to uninstall APN clean! For your info this is not visible in iphone applications! Thanks in advance! Ranga
Amit September 14, 2010 at 6:59 pm Rohit will the three methods mentioned by you above work in IPhone 4 too ( 4.0.1) ? I have tried to install unlock.nz. There is no problem with same and it also gives choice of selecting carrier which in my case is vodafone . I can see the E also in top bar. Still the Internet is not working??? The vodafone cus care confirms each time that Idata is active on my phone . Do you think you can assist ? Thanks

Dev October 13, 2010 at 5:28 am Hi, I have just jail broken/unlocked my iphone 4 using limera1n / ultrasn0w. I get full network and it also displays the carrier vodafone with an E right next to it. However, I constantly get the error could not activate cellular data network: You are not subscribed to a cellular data service. I confirmed that my IPhone data plan is active with Vodafone and have also tried my sim in another phone where it works perfectly. Any suggestions to help resolve the issue will be greatly appreciated.

I have activated mobile office plan by paying Rs 98/month. I want use that plan.. Airtel guy sent me the setting and said me to save it.. but i dont where to save it. Iphone4 doesnt have any apn by default. And with the help of first option you can edit the apn setting. Will you please help me ? How about copying carrier.list file from someones iphone 3gs file who has airtel working

It works fine with no problem. 1)Download Iphone Configuration Utility from Apple website 2) Install it 3) Open Iphone Configuration Utility application in ur PC and connect your iphone to your machine through USB 4)Click on Configuration profile 5) Provide name information as per your need in Configuration profile> General tab 6)Now go to Configuration profile>Advanced. This tab gives us the luxury to edit APN setting in our iphone 7) Give APN name: USer name: User Password: Proxy: IP address + Port hurryyyyyyy!! I didnt even needed to restart my phone and started!! Hope this procedure will help you.

S H December 17, 2010 at 2:37 pm I have unlocked iPhone 3gs (4.1) and could not change my APN settings (I had option only for VPN) and none of the previous solutions worked for me. This is what worked. Download Tether Me from Cydia (its 1.99). Then download the add on Tether Me APN Editing. IMMEDIATELY after downloading these apps I had the cellular data network menu available! I entered in my carrier info and everything works perfect. Dont waste your time modifying files which may or may not work, spend 2 bucks and be done in two minutes.

I have a T-Mobile SIM from US which I am trying to use on my unlocked iPhone 3G using the Airtel GPRS settings. I followed both Rohits and Vrajeshs suggestions. But, still I am not able to access the internet on my iPhone 3G using T-Mobile SIM. Some datapoints. 1) To confirm that my iPhone 3G is jailbroken, I am able to access the internet using the original Airtel SIM of my friend. 2) I can access the internet using my T-Mobile SIM on a Blackberry. Can someone please help ? Any other suggestions I can try out ? Thanks
Mike December 30, 2010 at 7:53 pm i tried this on my iphone 4. i removed the sim card while my iphone was turned on, i waited 10 minutes without touching the phone. even when it was giving that there is no sim, i didnt press ok or anything. after 10 minutes, i re-entered my sim card, and went to settings->general -> network. i found out that after doing this, i now have the ability to configure the APN settings. i added my carriers settings in lebanon and called the company to activate my edge connection. all is working now. hope this works for the rest as well.

Jay January 18, 2011 at 6:18 am Rohit brother i tried your above method but no avail, it did not work, ive got a iphone 3gs im with t-mobile uk and running on ios firmware version 4.2.1 with baseband (modem firmware) of 06.15.00, my internet was working just untill a few days ago but i keep getting this same error could not activate cellular data network, you are not subscribed to a cellular data service everytime, is there anything else i can do, do i need to change anything else in the carrier.plist file??? And also is there a specific way or order to put this : AllowEDGEEditing in the carrier.plist file?? or just randomly copy it in the file because i do not have the exact same content as you do as your sim is different than mine?! I have talked to t-mobile customer services but they say i need that APN setting in order to input the manual setting in my iphone to connect to the internet but i do not have that tab or setting just cellular data on and off setting tab. I have also checked my online t-mobile account and see that i am on that internet data plan service so whats wrong??? In addition i had the cellular data network tab once, when i first inserted my simcard in my iphone but that was it, it just vanised/disappeared i do not know how, is this a t-mobile issue, as i read also the network provider can disable this option so its users do not amend it or is it an apple issue as you have stated above? Also i checked my friends iphone 4 he does not have this option or setting either but he has internet on his mobile phone? Ive jailbroken my phone, and have sbsettings installed. And the data ip address keeps showing n/a. Gprs works with uninor, but not with reliance. What should i do?

sid March 30, 2011 at 11:52 pm hi. i did whts mentioned above, i can surf the net bt have some issues. can some1 help me out with these problems. iphone4 4.2 jailbroken vodafone 3G 1. i am unable to run cydia installations with and without 3G unrestrictor. 2. unable to stream music from desimusic app and raaga app 3. app store and itunes nt woring. 4. speedtest app nt working 5. mails not working. (although its mentioned) 6. fring, skype not working with/without 3G unrestrictor. thnx

bharath April 30, 2011 at 8:51 pm I tried the above steps under Change iPhone APN Settings Through Safari Browser [Quick and Easy Way] and tried with Airtelgprs.com but i am getting an error message as Profile Failed to Install the UUID for the profile APN Carrier Settings is not unique > i am still not able to connect to internet from my IPhone though AirTel has confirmed that, the GPRS has been enabled on my SIM connection

Ramesh June 2, 2011 at 12:17 am Hi Rohit, Thanks for the step-by-step guide. Have the APN settings on my phone now. While on AIRTEL PREPAID, i did not have any problems with connecting to the net, on my 3.1.3 OS 1st gen IPHONE, i noticed i was being debited @ 30paise/ 30kb, inspite of being on the Rs.98/2gb plan. As with AIRTEL, no help from their help lines or gallery staff, i could not stop the undue debits. They would not want to stop the net streaming from their end, even though they have all access. This setting will help me put an end to that till i can migrate to another service provider. Just to be sure, will removing airtel.gprs from the APN box, stop the EDGE service, Rohit? Thanks again

If i remove airtel.gprs from the APN column, and also leave username and password columns blank, will it stop the phone from access to the net. That is what i want to do, as i am debited @ 30p/ 30kb, inspite of having a fixed data plan. Thanks again:)

I have done several thing to trying to fix it, but none will do the thing When i want to install the new apn setting, my device is saying that theres an old apn profile on my iphone and thats the reason i can not install a new one.. Tryed it with apple config. prog and with several websites on my iphone (unlockit, apn setting by cydia) but none of them works Pls help me, couse i can not go on the 3G before i deleted the old apn profile once installed i have an iphone 3gs 4.3.3 new bootrom by tmobile Greets, Romek

CUSTOMER CARE GUYS TOLD ME TO SYNC IT WITH iTUNES, OR TO PUT www IN VPN SETTINGS.. but i couldnt get it done.. when i go to SETTING > GENERAL >VPN NOT CONNECTED, then i put VPN to ON, then it takes me to ADD CONFIGURATION and there i get 3 options 1. L2TP with description server account etc etc second tab 2. PPTP with certain options and third tab 3. IP sec with certain options NOW GUYS PLZZ HELP ME, WHAT TO DO, I DONT SEE ANY OPTIONS TO PUT www which Vodafone Customer care guy told me i m counting on u guys.. help me

Dear Rohit, 1. Thanx for a well written article and going through the comments of so many readers, it gives me confidence that you will have a solution for my proble. 2. I recently procured a iPhone 3G 8GB from US for myself which is jailbroken n unlocked. I have a idea connection and subscribed to the internet pack a few days ago. I did get a confirmation SMS stating that the pach ahs been activetaed but when I try using it it says Could not activate cellular data network. I did not get any GPRS settings though I requested for it twice. 3. Connected with this is another isuue: I cant even get it hooked onto my BSNL wifi connection. 4. I have no idea whats happening and am not very much into technicals. I would definitely appreciate, if u could kindle solve my problem. and that too in a simpler way. regards Major Rajneet

Steve August 21, 2011 at 3:36 am Can anyone help me out? I have a USA (AT&T Prepaid Services On A Microsim) ver 4.3.3, I unlocked it and I can make calls and receive text messages, and I tried the APN charger and 3G shows; but it still wont connect to internet. What am I doing wrong?
