General safety guidelines

Warning notices are provided to alert the reader to potentially hazardous situations which may arise if the proper precautions are ignored.

2-

Caution notices are provided to alert the reader to situations where damage to equipment or interruption of service may occur if the proper precautions are ignored. To avoid risk of injury or damage to equipment, follow all of the warning and caution notices provided in this document and on the OPTera Metro 4200 equipment, as well as the general safety procedures established by your company.

Optical safety aspects

The OPTera Metro 4200 equipment has been designed to meet the requirements of Specification EN 60825 as if they were Class 3A laser products, under normal operating and single fault conditions. The lasers normally operate in the Class 1 band and only enter Class 3A under worst case fault conditions. EN 60825 Class 3A requirements The Acceptable Emission Limits (AEL) for a wavelength of 1300 nm for Class 3A laser products is 24 mW (+13.8 dBm), reference EN60825-1 (IEC60825-1). The AEL for a wavelength of 1550 nm for Class 3A laser products is 50 mW (+17.0 dBm), reference EN60825-1 (IEC60825-1).

OPTera Metro 4200 Documentation Overview and Safety

2-2 General safety guidelines

Optical connector/fibre handling CAUTION

Optical connectors Clean all optical connectors by an approved method before making any optical connection. When making an optical connection, do not rotate the optical connector unnecessarily. When not connected, fit all optical plugs and couplings with captive caps.

CAUTION
Damage to optical fibres When dressing fibres, take care not to exceed the minimum bend radius (typically 35 mm) and do not overtighten tyraps used for dressing as damage may result.

WARNING
Danger from glass chips If there is any suspicion of a glass chip in the eye, seek medical attention at once.

The following precautions must be taken when working with single-fibre optical cables: Safety glasses must be worn when installing optical fibres. Small bits of glass fibre are almost invisible. After handling single fibre cables, hands should always be wiped clean or washed before making any contact with the eyes.

Handle optical fibres carefully and always position them in a safe and secure location during installation. Do not handle pieces of cut fibre with bare fingers. Use tweezers, or the sticky side of a piece of vinyl tape, to pick up and discard any loose fibre ends. All fibre cuttings should be placed in a plastic bottle provided for that purpose.

Normal operating conditions Under normal operating conditions each optical fibre section is essentially a closed system permitting no human access to optical radiation. WARNING
Optical safety - automatic laser shutdown (ALS) mechanism The optical units contain link options for disabling the automatic laser shutdown mechanism for test purposes. In normal operation, ensure that the laser shutdown mechanism is enabled (see Maintenance Procedures, 323-1233-547 for details).

323-1233-090 Release 2 Standard

General safety guidelines 2-3

Installation and system maintenance There is no requirement during installation or maintenance for an operator to view a fibre end or connector whilst the associated laser is powered. However, under these operating conditions exposure to optical radiation is possible under the following conditions: when an optical connection is unmated on an operational fibre section when there is a break in the fibre section due to damage and when the section is operational

As the type of optical connectors used on all the systems do not involve the use of lenses, both the above conditions can be considered to be equivalent, i.e. the safety consideration is equivalent to that for an exposed fibre end. In these situations compliance with the Class 3A safety requirements discussed above is assured because the operating light power levels of these systems is below Class 3A limits. WARNING
Invisible laser radiation Do not stare into beam or view directly with optical instruments. Class 3A laser product. IEC 60825-1

Servicing The optical units are not intended for servicing by the operator. In the event of a fault, the optical units must be returned to Nortel Networks for repair or replacement. The customer should undertake to enforce certain engineering and administrative controls in the use of optical fibre systems, such as: Good housekeeping. Cleanliness and handling of fibres with care. Labelling is clearly visible at all times and not removed. Adequately trained staff. Although the OPTera Metro 4200 is designed to remain within Class 3A limits, it is recommended that the following safe working practices are observed: Never view an unterminated optical fibre or connector close to the optical transmitter, unless the optical source has been turned off. This also relates to a broken fibre in an optical cable section which should have the optical power removed. Removal of the optical power should be confirmed over a period of at least 2 minutes (due to the automatic laser shutdown and auto-restart facilities used on some systems). When not connected, fit all optical plugs and couplings with captive caps.
OPTera Metro 4200 Documentation Overview and Safety

2-4 General safety guidelines

When making a connection, do not rotate the optical plug unnecessarily. Clean all optical plugs and couplings by an approved method before making any optical connection. Procedures detailing the work to be carried out on the system, thereby minimising any risk to the maintenance staff. System operating levels Laser output powers are set up and controlled within 0.5 dB of nominal during manufacture. The optical output power level above is the mean power value which is the most onerous from the safety point of view. Identification Yellow laser output warning labels (see below) are fixed to the optical cards on laser based systems. The label is positioned close to the optical connector.

Yellow explanatory labels (see below) are fixed to the equipment which define the laser classification.

INVISIBLE LASER RADIATION DO NOT STARE INTO BEAM OR VIEW DIRECTLY WITH OPTICAL

Automatic laser shutdown

The STM-1 optical tributary and STM-4 optical aggregate cards contain circuits which shut down the laser if certain fault conditions occur.

323-1233-090 Release 2 Standard

General safety guidelines 2-5

The laser is shut down immediately if the OS-Optical_Power_High alarm is raised. The laser shutdown is latched; the laser remains off until the card is reseated or the subrack is power cycled. Note: The ALS link on the optical card has no effect on this shut down mechanism. Automatic laser shutdown (ALS) occurs if the RS-LOS alarm is present for greater than 550+50 ms. If the alarm clears the laser is switched back on immediately. If the alarm does not clear, the laser attempts to automatically restart by pulsing the laser on for 2 seconds every 180 seconds. Note: The operation of ALS can be disabled by removing the optical card and inserting a link on the card. The OS-Disable_Laser_Shutdown alarm is raised for the optical port instance. Conclusions As shown above, the accessible optical radiation available in these systems are within the Class 3A limits for continuous viewing and at any distance from a fibre end. Furthermore, the equipment design minimises access to optical radiation both physically and procedurally during all phases of operation

Electrical safety

WARNING
Electric Shock/Energy hazard The -48/60 Vdc supply can cause electric shock and can deliver high currents. Avoid contact with live parts. Remove all rings, watches and other metal jewellery before commencing work. Do not bridge conductors with tools etc.

Static sensitive device handling precautions

CAUTION
The cards contain static sensitive devices. These devices are sensitive to static electricity and must be protected by special handling and packaging.

Many items of electronic equipment contain components which are sensitive to discharges of static electricity. This can induce interference in working circuits and may damage small components such as integrated circuits. The problem occurs when static is rapidly discharged either through the equipment or via the equipment covers and adjacent metalwork.

OPTera Metro 4200 Documentation Overview and Safety

2-6 General safety guidelines

Products containing static sensitive devices are identified by a label (barred hand symbol), as shown below.

The risk of damage and interference can be minimised by following the precautions given in the European Standard basic specification for the protection of electrostatic sensitive devices, EN 100015-1. Some of these precautions are summarised below: Personnel must wear conductive and bonded wrist straps which conform to EN 100015-1 and be connected to an electrostatic discharge (ESD) bonding point or, if there is no point available, via an ESD adaptor. Do not connect to anodised metal or equipment front panels. Always connect the ESD wrist strap to the equipment rack ESD bonding point before removing covers, cards or connectors. The wrist strap must be in contact with the wearers skin. Cards should only be handled by the edges, avoiding contact with the components, printed circuit board tracks and connectors. Spare cards should be stored in their original anti-static packaging. Any cards removed from the subracks should be placed in anti-static bags. Servicing of cards or units should be carried out in an electrostatic protected area as defined in EN 100015-1. If this is not practical, use conductive floor and bench mats connected to the equipment rack ESD bonding point. All test equipment and trolleys should be connected to the ESD bonding point.

323-1233-090 Release 2 Standard

General safety guidelines 2-7

Mechanical handling considerations

CAUTION
Risk of personal injury Due to the weight of the subrack, the mounting of the subrack in the rack requires two installers for safe working.

CAUTION
Risk of damage to equipment When inserting a card, ensure that the card is inserted in the card-guides.

Hazardous materials
There are no potentially hazardous materials that require special handling during normal operation, maintenance and repair. However, small amounts of hazardous materials are used in the manufacture of some electrical components. Nortel Networks identifies those components which use a significant quantity of potentially hazardous materials and provides details of the special handling techniques required. Where no special handling techniques are detailed, or when it is not known if a component contains hazardous materials, the following general recommendations for the handling and disposal of electrical components should be followed: Do not dismantle the component. If already broken, collect all the broken parts avoiding skin contact and inhalation. Place in a suitable container for disposal. Do not incinerate. Dispose of in accordance with local toxic waste procedures or in accordance with the recommendations of component manufacturers.

Justification A process whereby an extra, non-data bit is inserted into some frames of the tributary data but not others, in order to adjust the average tributary bit rate to correspond to the multiplexer frame rate. Holdover mode An operating mode in which the NE maintains the timing of the last synchronization source.

3-8 List of terms and abbreviations

Multiplexing The process of combining a number of signals so that they can share a common transmission facility. Open Systems Interconnect (OSI) A seven layer reference model for the definition of interfaces in communication systems. Path Overhead (POH) Overhead information pertaining to the end to end paths. Plesiochronous The essential characteristic of time-scales or signals such that their corresponding significant instants occur at nominally the same rate, any variation in rate being constrained within specified limits. Section Overhead (SOH) Overhead information pertaining to a particular section of the network. Synchronous The essential characteristic of a time-scales or signals such that their corresponding significant instants usually occur at precisely the same average rate. Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) The name given to the ITU-U recommendations which detail the world standards covering synchronous transmission. Synchronous Transport Level 1 Basic element of the Synchronous Digital Hierarchy which comprises either one AU-4 or three AU-3s and Section Overhead information. Tributary The lower rate signal input to a multiplexer for combination (multiplexing) with other low rate signals to form an aggregate higher rate signal. Tributary Unit (TU) Element of the Synchronous Digital Hierarchy which consists of a Virtual Container (VC) plus an TU pointer. The phase alignment of the TU pointers is fixed with relation to the next highest level of the hierarchy and indicates the positions of the VC. Tributary Unit Group (TUG) Element of the Synchronous Digital Hierarchy which is formed by a group of identical TUs or TUGs. Virtual Container (VC) Element of the Synchronous Digital Hierarchy built up from a container plus Path Overhead information. Higher level VCs may comprise a number of TUs or TUGs.
