rInwhathasbeencalledoneoftheworstmasskillingsonaU.S.militarybase,amanwhose humblebeginningsarerootedintheElPasoCiudadJurezborderlandlosthislife. Maj.EduardoCaraveo,whowasaUTEPalumnus,wasoneofthe13peoplekilledlast ThursdaybyanotherU.S.ArmyofficialatFortHood,Texas.CaraveowasattheReadiness ProcessingCenterwhenMaj.NidalMalikHasanopenedfireintheenclosedbuilding,leaving morethan30otherpeoplewounded. CaraveowasraisedinElPasoandCd.JurezandlivedinSegundoBarrioformostofhis youth.AfterhegraduatedfromBowieHighSchool,heattendedUTEPtoachievehisbachelor's andmaster'sdegrees.Hereceivedhismaster'sdegreeincounselingin1980.Heearneda Ph.D.attheUniversityofArizona. Hisfamilydescribedhimasajoyfulandcharitablemanwhowasanexcellentfatherandbrother, andsaidhealwaysstoodoutfromhissiblings. "Hewasverydifferentfromallofus,maybebecausehewastheonlyprofessionalinthefamily," hisbrotherRafaelCaraveo,60,said."HepraisedUTEPhealwayssaiditwasagreatschool." Despiterelocationsaroundthecountry,EduardoCaraveomaintainedstrongtiestoElPaso.His familyconsistedofsevensiblings,fourofwhichstillliveinthebordercity. HisolderbrotherFernandoCaraveo,71,saidhewaseveryone's"consentido,"orfavorite,and thathewasalwaysveryloving. "It'sveryhardit'satragedy,"RafaelCaraveosaid."Helovedthiscountrythattookhimin,that gavehimhiseducation.Hewasanexcellentperson." Healsohelpedsoldiersdealwithposttraumaticstressdisorderandothertraumasfromwar,accordingtoElaineLeVine,whoworked closelywithEduardoCaraveoduringhisquestforhighereducationwhenheattendedNMSU.Sheisthetrainingdirectorofthepost doctoraldegreeinclinicalpharmacologyforpsychologists,theprogramthathetookpartin. "Hewasawonderfulperson,verysmart,veryenergetic,absolutelycommittedtohelpingpeople,"LeVinesaid. LeVineaddedthatshebelieveshisbackgroundandchildhoodweregreatcontributorstohissuccessasaclinicalpsychologist. "Hehimselfcamefromaverydifficultbackground,raisedinpoverty.Heovercameitanddedicatedhislifetohelpingothersdothat," shesaid."Hereallybelievedinpeople'sabilitytoovercometheenvironmentalandpersonallimitationsintheirlives." AccordingtoLeVine,theAmericanSocietyfortheAdvancementofPharmacotherapyisplanningtosetupamemorialfundinhisname. Theprojectisalreadyintheplanningstages,andtheyareworkingoncontactinghisfamilyandsettingupthescholarshipfund. "Asformeandhiscolleagues,wefeelanenormouslossforourselvesandforsociety,"LeVinesaid.
