Saint Joseph Parish Mission Statement: The faith-filled parishioners of Saint Joseph Catholic Church of Arma, built in the trinity of Jesus Christ, value tradition and prayer. We are committed to strong leadership, responsive community service, and forming caring, welcoming, intimate relationships with our fellow brothers and sisters. We seek to become a more diverse, vibrant, active church family. Notes from the Pastor: In the past weekend, I mentioned how COMMUNION is very important aspect in our faith and in our being Church, the body of Christ. That as the body of Christ we have to remain united to our head and His representative, theologically termed vicar. In our diocese it is the bishop which we have to follow with respect and obedience. Last Monday, October 15 until Thursday the 18th, that communion with the bishop was best expressed with the gathering of all the clergy of the diocese at the Spiritual Life Center in Wichita. The gathering focused on recognition and thanksgiving for the gifts this diocese has been blessed with: all the bishops and clergy living and dead. They have served for the growth of this diocese by fulfilling the threefold office delegated by Christ to the apostles and their successors- to teach, to govern, and to sanctify. In the name of this teaching office, I urge those who espouse parochialism (those who think only of our existence as a parish), to remember that we are part of the universal whole, in our area, our diocese of Wichita, under our head, the Bishop. As a parish we have to embrace our diocesan spirit which is the spirit of Stewardship, the focus of our diocese. Last year, if you remember, I tried to show you the video on the spirituality of Stewardship. We bring you to reflection on the meaning of our diocesan definition of Stewardship: A grateful response of a Christian disciple, who recognizes and receives Gods gifts and shares these gifts in love of God and neighbor. I mentioned to you that it is the heart of everything that we do as a parish. Here at Saint Joseph there are still lots of things to be done to unite ourselves with the entire diocese by becoming a Stewardship Parish, that is, we (all parishioners) will be willing to offer not just our treasure, but also our time and talent. In the organizational aspect, we I am more inclined to convert our parish pastoral council into the Parish Stewardship council. There is not much difference in terms of functions except Next Sunday(10/28/2012) 8:00 AM Chase & Tejay Cleland Dave & Dustin Ashmore that it is more focused on our being stewards of Gods gifts! You will hear more about this in the next few weeks. This has not been discussed in the council yet, but we will be discussing this in our next meeting. In the meantime, I urge all of you to continue to pray for our parish community, for more participation, for unity and peace. Also during this month of the rosary and this Year of Faith, I am encouraging everyone to continue to pray the rosary especially as a family and to study either in your individual time or avail of our parish study groups to give yourselves a chance to grow and strengthen your faith in God! God bless you all! Fr. Two Obscure Saints This Week As I scanned Butlers Lives of the Saints, two rather obscure priests have their feast days this week. On this coming Tuesday, there is St. John of Capistrano, born in 1386 during the dreaded Black Death that swept Europe. The Western Schism had split the Church of Rome when candidates from Avignon and Rome both claimed that they were the rightful Pope. (and we think we have trouble today?) At age 34, John was ordained a priest after joining the Franciscans. It was a time of religious confusion, and his orthodox preaching attracted many to return to the faith. John also helped reunite Greek and Armenian churches and when the Turks captured Constantinople, he preached a crusade for the defense of Europe. He died Oct. 23, 1456. This Wednesday, the Church recognizes St. Magloire, born in Brittany, a region in northwestern France, in 495 A.D. He and his cousin, Sampson, were close, and when his cousin joined monastery, Magloire chose not to join. Some years later, Amon, Sampsons father, was cured of a disease through prayers. Amon, thankful to God, consecrated himself and his family to Gods work. Magloire was so greatly moved by his uncles gesture that he got his parents and two brothers to give their possessions to the poor and to the Church. Soon, Magloire joined Sampson at his monstery and when Sampson was made Bishop of Brittany, Magloire served him well. At Sampsons death, Magloire took his place as Bishop. After three years, he resigned his post and established a monastery for over 50 monks. Both he and Sampson were later canonized as saints. He died on Oct. 24, 575. The Bible: More Than a Book, Its a Textbook For Life In years past, Catholics were often labeled as deficient in Bible reading: it was Protestants who read the Bible and took it literally in most cases. However, many Catholics today are taking their Bible off the shelf and reading it for inspiration and guidance from God. Just this past weekend, Fr. Lumbre suggested that we read the Bible, if only a few verses each day. The main difference between Catholics and Protestants is this: Protestants believe that the Bible is the only rule of faith, whereas Catholics believe that God revealed himself in Christ, and that Christ entrusted his teaching to his apostles, that is, to the Church guided by the apostles. Catholics believe that most of Gods revelation is found in the Bible, while some is handed down authentically by the Church, known as tradition. When you open the New Testament, youll find 27 different books listed. Except for six of them, these 27 books are actually letters. The six exceptions are the four gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke & John), Lukes Acts of the Apostles, and the last book in the Bible, Revelation. I heard Bishop Jackels a few years ago at a graduation when he encouraged the seniors to read the Bible. He said, Continue to grow in the knowledge of Jesus and what He asks of us. Resist the temptation to put aside your Bible. Its more than a class book; its a textbook for life. This is where we come to know God. You cant love what you dont know. Take your Bible to college with you. Make a commitment to read it everyday, even if only a few sentences daily. God will have spoken to you. We need a personal, friendly relationship with Jesus and this is a surefire way of getting it. The Church has kept the Bible authentic and she remains the custodian of Gods word and the Bible should be interpreted in the light of the Churchs teachings. Even Martin Luther admitted in his Commentary, We are compelled to concede to the Catholics, that they have the Word of God, that we received it from them, and that without them, we should have no knowledge of it at all.
