Vision and Mission of the Year of Faith

Vision and Mission of the Year of Faith

The Year of Faith With the Apostolic letter of 11 October 2011, PortaFidei (the Door of Faith) Pope Benedict XVI has declared a Year of Faith in the Church. This Year of Faith will begin on 11 October 2012, on the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council, and will conclude on 24 November 2013, the solemnity of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Universal King. The starting date of 11 October also marks the 20th anniversary of the publication of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. The aim of the Year of Faith Rediscover the fundamentals of Christian faith in its wholeness and splendor in order to leadpeople who are seeking it to the door of faith. Renewed conversion and encounter with the Risen Lord which gives life a new horizon and decisive direction. The Door of Faith The door of faith is always open for us. It leads us into the life of communion with God. It gives us entry into the Church. By the proclamation of the Word of God, we are invited to cross the threshold of faith. A heart shaped/ opened by the transforming grace of God can easily cross the door of faith. To enter into the door of faith is to set out a journey that lasts a lifetime. It begins with baptism (cf. Rom 6:4). It ends with the passage through death to eternal life. The mystery of faith leads us to profess faith in the most Holy Trinity. It is to believe in one God who is love (cf. 1 Jn 4:8). We believe in the Father who in the fullness of time sent his Son for our salvation. We believe in Jesus Christ who in the mystery of his death and resurrection redeemed the world. We believe in the Holy Spirit who leads the Church across the centuries as we await the Lords glorious return. Faith Crisis Christians are more concerned for the social, cultural and political consequences of their commitment. They think of the faith as a self-evident presupposition for life in society. A profound crisis of faith has a ected many people. We must rediscover a taste for feeding ourselves on the Word of God, faithfully handed down by the Church, and on the bread of life, oered as sustenance for his people. (cf. Jn 6:51). Belief in Jesus Christ, then, is the way to arrive de nitely at salvation. Why the Year of Faith begins on the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Vatican Council II? To uphold the validity and value of Vatican II and to show that council teachings have lost nothing of their value or brilliance. They need to be read correctly, to be widely known and taken to heart as important and normative texts of the Magisterium, within the Church tradition. They can be considered as the great grace bestowed on the Church in the twentieth century. Therein we can nd sure compass to carry out the bearings of the 21st century. To be continued
