PROBLEM 1 (2 marks each = 10 marks) Short Answer Problems (Use only the space provided under each question) a) Briefly explain the difference between creep and shrinkage of concrete.
b) Give two factors why the strength of concrete in a structure may be different from the specified concrete strength, fc. If more than two are given, only the first two will be marked.
c) Why are deflections difficult to calculate accurately for reinforced concrete members? What approach is commonly used in design to avoid the need to determine deflections?
d) If the required area of flexural reinforcement for a beam is As reqd = 2000 mm2, is it preferred to select 2- 35M bars or 4-25M bars? Why?
e) Using strain profiles explain why a tension-controlled section will have a larger curvature at failure compared with a compression controlled section.

PROBLEM 2 (20 marks) Determine the factored moment resistance of the rectangular reinforced concrete beam section shown below as a function of the effective depth, d. Draw the relationship on axes provided below. Hint: Determine the moment resistance for 3 values of d, but be sure to select values of d carefully. Given: fc = 25 MPa, fy = 400 MPa, c = 0.65, s = 0.85. All dimensions in mm.

PROBLEM 3 (20 marks) Select reinforcement (bar size and number) for a simply-supported 8 meter span beam with the cross section shown below. The beam supports a factored uniformly distributed load of 80 kN/m (including self-weight). Assume d = 550 mm, fc = 25 MPa, fy = 400 MPa. Need only provide one iteration of the design process if design strength is within 25% of factored demands. All dimensions in mm
