New Campaign Builds Healthy Future for Houstons School Children

In 1997, CHRISTUS School Based Clinics began providing everyday, on-campus care to kids attending schools in greater Houstons under-served neighborhoods. From humble beginnings, the School Based Clinics program is today stronger than ever, thanks to ongoing donor support and a staff of dedicated nurse practitioners, truly angels among us. One Houston couple, is taking this generosity and dedication to even greater heights through a landmark matching donation program that will help to forge an even brighter, healthier future for Houstons school children.

Meeting the Challenge, Dollar for Dollar

The $500,000 campaign goal, dubbed Keeping Children Healthy was fueled by the generous dollar-for-dollar, up to $150,000 matching

The Power of School Based Clinics

Direct healthcare to students and families Screening and referral for health conditions Leadership in promoting health and a healthy school environment Liaisons among school personnel, family, community and other healthcare providers At a busy CHRISTUS School Based Clinic, a variety of conditions are addressed from treatment of strep throat to patching-up minor cuts and scrapes. This year, nearly 5,000 children have received care at one of fifteen Houston-area CHRISTUS School Based Clinics. initiative and will expand to four additional inner-city Houston schools. Thanks to the Keeping Children Healthy Campaign every dollar you donate to support the health of our next generation can do double-duty, as it funds twice as many on-campus health screenings, primary care referrals and bandaged knees as before. The new School Based Clinics to open thanks to the Keeping Children Healthy Campaign will join the others, expanding the outreach to a total of fifteen schools and assure that even more kids in our community will benefit. Nun Run Make it a Habit! October 20, 2012

The Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, Houston and 350 motorcycle enthusiasts invite you to join them on October 20, 2012 for the 8th annual Nun Run. Your support to the Nun Run directly provides healthcare to disadvantaged children through the CHRISTUS School Based Clinics. This past school year, 5,000 students received medical care through the School Based Clinics program. The Nun Run mission is help keep kids healthy, in school and keep parents at work. Taking leadership by the handlebars! CHRISTUS Foundation for HealthCare board members, David Baird, Jeb Bashaw, Jai Daggett, Jim Harris, Tommy Mann, and Bill Wallace have committed and joined forces as the Nun Run Amigos, each member taking an effort to help achieve fundraising goal and mission of Keeping Children Healthy. Restoring Smiles for Thirty Years

Have you ever considered what it would be like to face the world without a smile? Along with struggling to readily display joy on their little faces, children born with facial anomalies have difficulty eating and are often treated as outcasts in their communities. This year, in an annual effort to give children in faraway places the smiles they so deserve, the Operation San Jos Mission Team, composed of 21 volunteers, traveled to Guatemala. Here, its members performed approximately 90 procedures on 30 patients, ranging in age from two months to 23 years of age. Jos team, led by Ernest Cronin, M.D., has made annual trips south of the border. The project serves a threefold purpose. First, it provides free surgical intervention for children suffering from cleft lip and palate deformities. Second, it encourages an international exchange of medical information, giving medical staff in developing countries the opportunity to learn advanced medical techniques. Finally, Operation San Jos provides experience for plastic surgeons in training. The plastic surgery residents refine their skills in facial reconstruction techniques under the direct supervision of an experienced faculty member. Each trip is made at the invitation of the host country and patients are not charged for surgical procedures.
