Bali's Beaches: Free Access for All

Some Hotels in South Bali Accused of Barring Public Use of the Beachfronts A number of hotels in Nusa Dua are being accused of expropriating their beachfronts, turning these areas into private beaches off-limits to non-hotel guests. The Bali Post highlights the problem, reporting that people straying onto some beach fronts at Nusa Dua are turned back by security personnel who warn that only hotel guests are allowed access to the beach front. And while some beach visitors protest, correctly insisting that all beaches are open to public access in Bali, the security guards remain steadfast in barring their passage. Protest from local citizens have prompted the chairman of the Bali chapter of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI). IGN Rai Surya Wijaya to issue a statement, saying: The beach belongs to the public and cannot be closed or controlled by anyone. What's use of the beach panorama afforded by their location and place lounge chairs up and down the beach that give the mistaken impression of exclusive control and ownership of the beach. While in reality the beach belongs the undisputable right of all people in Bali to enjoy. The PHRI-Bali chairman expressed the belief that hotels laying more than their rightful claim on their beachfront can, i n f a c t , b e encountered in many areas of Bali, not just in Nusa Dua. Bali's offciial zoning law, RTRWP 2009, contains stipulations intended to safeguard the public right-ofway to all beaches by outlawing all permement structure being built within 100 meters of the high water mark. www.balidiscovery.com

KUTA
Kuta is nestled between Jl. Bakungsari to the south and Jl. Melasti to the north. Kuta is the best known of all the villages in Bali, often maligned, but loved by many. Kuta gets its so called bad reputation from the early days of travel to Bali where everybody, particularly the young crowd, hung out and got wrecked. Footpaths didn't exist, open drains ran down the side of unmade roads. Shopping was sarongs and T-shirts and hawkers who sold just about anything. Times have changed and Kuta has grown up, gone are the unmade roads and open drains. Footpaths, although narrow, run both sides of the main streets. The hawkers are still there - part of the character of the place. Sarongs and T-shirts are still sold but now there are CD shops, boutiques, small trendy bars and restaurants and even Department Stores. Kuta boasts the world's first "themed" Hard Rock Hotel. BALI THE RIGHT WAY

Gday again folks and welcome back. I'm glad to see the world still has Mr Obama ranked as the most powerful man on the planet and don't we all know it. Apparently he only just got in sending the world markets into a wild spin for a few days after the event making a few people enough cash to buy new cars, with others still complaining about the cost of a beer. It's a funny thing when you think about it, some people are here and completely on the bones of their arses with others spending 3 million a night on wine, women aliasj@kutaweekly.com and song. It always fascinates me as to how these broke souls can actually afford to stay here and live a decent life style. They must just book up at different places and not go back again, or scam other people with sad sack stories and rip people off with rents or commissions. Not a good way to enjoy the rest of your life in Bali if you ask me, but like old mate says it wouldn't do if we were all the same. I think the majority of people that come here are holiday makers so they save for a while, then head up here and have a ball, spending what they've saved and enjoying what Bali has to offer. Most expats that are here are retired and have thought ahead (which most blokes do) but for a very few of them it's all about saving every last rupiah. I personally couldn't stand the thought of pinching for every penny and I guess am lucky in my life as far as the coin situation goes. I don't want for too much. I guess we all get caught up in the negotiation thing as it's what most of us did when we first came up here, but after living here for a while I think you have to start realizing if your helper says it's a good price and you have three other prices all about the same, then you just have to say yeah go for it I'll take it and pay the man instead of pushing for a further discounted price. Generally a tradesman, if pushed will drop the price to win your deal, but if the price is a standard price and you push for more discount you'll get what you paid for (and in most cases, what you deserve) a far inferior product. I guess we are a nation of tight arses so it's in our nature to question everything that is put in front of us and sometimes to our own detriment. The sellers here know how we operate and are many steps ahead. Again it wouldn't do if were all the same. At the end of the day Bali is a great place to live and a fantastic place to holiday. Ok moving along we did get a nice email from a reader during the week which I would like you all to see. The letter is as follows;

THE BUKIT
Much has been written about this dusty, arid and rugged area, which forms the southern most tip of the island.
Limestone cliffs of up to 100 meters in height provide some of the best views in the world, along with some deserted white sandy beaches. Everyone wants a piece of this are, from international hotel chains such as Bvlgari, Versace and Banyan Tree, to established residential villa developers looking for that perfect plot. The area offers secluded beaches, and exclusivity to name but a few reasons why this is fast becoming the place to be. Prices have more than tripled in the area over last 2 years alone with still plenty of potential to be realized, so now is a plan. Only a short 15 minutes drive from the international airport, The Bukit is fast being referred to as the new Millionaires Row.

JIMBARAN
Jimbaran is just south of the airport and Kuta. This was formerly a real backwater of south Bali, just a tiny fishing village with a daily market. That all started to change in the 1980s and Jimbaran is now home to several world class 5 star beach resorts, plus a few more moderate mid-market hotels. There is however little in the way of budget accommodation and there are also many high-end villas in this area, particularly on the ridges of high ground above Jimbaran Bay. This has resulted in monikers such as the "Beverly Hills of Bali" or "Millionaire's Row". The bay itself has a pleasant white sand beach and is very safe for swimming. The three clusters of grilled seafood restaurants on the beach are a major tourist draw in the evenings, as is the truly stunning sunset. Jimbaran is also home to a Norwegian University, Gateway College, with around 500 students studying athletics, philosphy, culture, economics and journalism. The school is located in Kedonganan close to Sari Segara Resort and in Jl, Bantas Kau where it also has a small cafe. Jimbaran has an increasing number of rather chic shops but there is little or no nightlife here. It has the advantage of being a little closer to Kuta and Seminyak and the cultural highlights of Central Bali.

A Struggle for Justice

Anand Krishna Vows to Resist Court Order for His Arrest Beritadewata.com reports that Indonesian campaigner for a pluralistic society Anand Krishna has vowed to mortally resist efforts to execute an Indonesian court order for him to begin serving a 2.5-year prison sentence. Dr. Sayoga, a spokesman for the Community of Supporters of Anand Krishna ( K P A A ) , confirmed that am arrest letter sent from the South Jakarta District Court to Krishna's Jakarta address was refused and remained unread. Krishna has confirmed that he will resist all official efforts to bring him to prison, condemning the Supreme Court decision that overturned his earlier absolute acquittal as legally defective, injurious to the principle of justice before the law, an attempt to deny him his constitutional rights and a basic violation of his human rights. Sayoga told the press: The highest expression of respect and esteem for law is when a person stands up to oppose an unjust law and is prepared to suffer the consequences in order that the public can be made aware of a continuing injustice. Kirshna's spokesman confirmed that the champion of Indonesian pluralism will remain in isolation in Bali, continuing to resist what he and his followers see as a fundamental injustice. The experts universally concluded that the judicial review and reversal of Anand Krishna's innocent verdict by the Supreme Court was in violation of the Indonesian Constitution and offended Krishna's human rights. The High Court for the South Jakarta Court led by respected jurist Albertina Ho had earlier unconditionally freed Anand Krishna on all charges and restored his civil rights, ruling he was not guilty of the criminal charges made against him. The KPAA have made available a public examination of the Anand Krishna case carried out in Yogyakarta and Denpasar in October by a group of high-reanking legal authorities. The best option for you will depend on your personal situation, the type of property, risk factors and the type of investment model. Even though it states in Indonesian law that foreigners are not allowed to hold a 'freehold' land title, there are ways that have been in practice for a number of years that enable foreigners to control a freehold title indirectly or to hold a leasehold title in their own name.

Or foreigner permanently domiciled in Indonesia, or a foreign legal entity with a representative office in Indonesia such as foreign Banks, embassies, etc.

NOMINEE SYSTEM FOR HAK MILIK

This structure is a regularly practiced procedure in Indonesia, whereby the foreigner nominates and Indonesian representative to acquire the land and to hold the 'freehold' title (Hak Milik) on behalf of the foreigner. Ownership of the land is transferred from the previous owner to the Indonesian nominee. The foreigner and the Indonesian nominee then sign an agreement which recognizes the Indonesian nominee as the legal owner of the property whilst declaring the foreigner as the rightful owner of the property. This agreement denotes that the Indonesian nominee will carry out any directives from the foreigner regarding the land. This agreement must always be concluded in the presence of a public notary.

HOROSCOPE PREDICTION 15 Nov - 21 Nov 2012

Expect an intense week with passions running high and patience running low. Be careful you don't hurt loved ones with thoughtless remarks or critical comments. Think before you speak! With Venus visiting your relationship zone [until November 22] your motto for the moment is from birthday great Robert Louis Stevenson Compromise is the best and cheapest lawyer.

Legal Transparency

Taurus April 21 to May 21

Love is in the air! The Solar Eclipse reboots a rickety relationship, as you patch up problems and move in a new romantic direction. Singles you're in the mood for some fabulous flirting, and may fall for someone who's older [or more mature] than you. Mars charges into your travel zone, so it's time to blast beyond your Bull boundaries and go on a grand adventure.

Scorpio October 24 to November 22

With Wednesday's Solar Eclipse [plus Saturn] visiting your sign, you need to 'prune' your life and remove any people, possessions, habits, beliefs or attitudes that have passed their used-by date. And, the sooner you do it, the less painful it will be. Saturday's aspects are stressful so pace yourself. Study, research, communication, commerce and travel are all favored on Sunday.

Gemini May 22 to June 21

Are you spending too much time talking and not enough time moving? The Solar Eclipse activates your health zone so it's the best time of the year to get fabulously fit. Regular exercise will clear your head and nutritious food will lift your energy levels. But, with Mercury [your ruler] squaring Neptune, avoid being a gullible Gemini and somewhat elastic with the truth.

Sagittarius November 23 to December 21

During the week, the Solar Eclipse stimulates your spiritual side so it's the perfect time to tune into your intuition [which is trying to steer you in the right direction]. Plus aim for some splendid solitude, as you relax and regenerate from within. Come the weekend, you're in the mood for stimulating conversation, as Sun/Mercury aspects boost your Sagittarian gift of the gab.

Cancer June 22 to July 23

Your romance and creativity zone is receiving attention from the sultry Solar Eclipse. So you'll feel like declaring your love for someone special, or beginning a project you're passionate about. With mighty Mars marching into your relationship zone, loved ones will be more assertive than usual and it's up to you to offer a fractious family member the olive branch of peace.

Capricorn December 22 to January 20

With the Solar Eclipse highlighting your hopes and wishes zone, strive to be super creative with your dreams and aspirations for the future. Mars zooms into your sign on Saturday [where it stays until December 26] so it's time to be a confident Capricorn, as you power through projects with extra energy and enthusiasm. Decide what you want and then go and get it!

Leo July 24 to August 23

Are you optimistic about love one moment and completely flummoxed the next? Or are you stuck in the middle of a family fiasco? You'll go through many changes of heart this week, as the Solar Eclipse stirs up stormy emotions. And, with Neptune confusing communication, resist the temptation to over-react to perceived criticism. It's time to keep your cool Cats!

Aquarius January 21 to February 19

Wednesday's Solar Eclipse signals it's time for a fresh approach to work or study. Perhaps you should move to a different school [or tertiary institution], change your job or even your vocation. Restless, adventurous Aquarians rarely stay in the same occupation for long periods. So make the most of your professional potential, use your imagination and cast your net wide.

Virgo August 24 to September 23

With the Solar Eclipse in enigmatic Scorpio, you're keen to solve a mystery or uncover a secret. But Mercury is likely to scramble your antennae and communication is bound to get complicated, so don't take what others say too literally make sure you read between the lines. Aim for a complete mental spring-clean, as you find fresh solutions to stubborn old problems.

Pisces February 20 to March 20

Travel and study are highlighted, as Wednesday's Solar Eclipse activates your zone of overseas contacts and higher learning. So expect a busy week as you meet up with fabulous friends and adventurous acquaintances, whether in person or online. But if you over-idealize people and situations then you'll just end up feeling confused, disappointed or misunderstood.

This is needed not only as a means of socializing information to the public, but also to facilitate officials in ascertaining the legal status of each project. Despite these existing regulations, many construction sites in Bali in an advance state development do not post the required information.

California teen steps into rattlesnake nest

A teenage California girl searching for a cell phone signal to call her mother in a rural area outside San Diego inadvertently stepped into a nest of rattlesnakes and was bitten six times, but survived. The 16-year-old, Vera Oliphant, spent four days in the intensive care unit of Sharp Grossmont Hospital, and doctors gave her 24 vials of antivenom after she was bitten by an adult rattlesnake and five young rattlers outside her uncle's home. "I was trying to find a signal to call my mom and text my boyfriend," Oliphant said, a day after she was released from the hospital following the incident. "I didn't see them until I already stepped on their nest and I felt them biting me." "My vision started to go right away. First it looked like the snakes blended into the leaves and then I started seeing black spots around the edges and I started blacking out." She returned to her uncle's home in Jamul, outside San Diego, and he immediately packed her into the car and rushed her to the emergency room, she said. On the way, she talked to her mom and her boyfriend, who told her to stay calm so the venom wouldn't spread. "I told my mom and my boyfriend I love them in case I don't get to see them again," she said. Doctors there administered 24 vials of anti-venom to quash the dangerous toxins, according to a hospital spokesman. Snakebites usually aren't fatal, although a handful of people die in the United States each year from snake bites, including bites from rattlesnakes. Oliphant has recovered and will be returning to classes at Chaparral High School in El Cajon. She said the next time she can't get a signal, she will handle it differently. "Be careful where you step," she said. "If you don't need to, just wait until you are somewhere that you can call people."

Continued from page 1 The Bali starlings' natural environment is in the West Bali National Park, located in the western part of the island. This is the first time that the birds have been released outside their natural habitat. Ketut Catur Marbawa, the head of the conservation section of the Nature Conservation Agency (BKSDA) said: The original habitat (of the birds) is the West

Bali National Park. We once released bird on Nusa Penida island because its environment mirrored the National Park. But, this is the first time we have released the birds in a new type of habitat. The Green School is located in a verdant jungle river setting, markedly different from the arid climate of West Bali. T h e B e g a w a n Foundation, who facilitated the Bali Starling release, has coordinated with the 7 villages

or banjars located near the Green School to socialize the program and seek community support for the reintroduction of the birds into nature. We hope that the local people will join in by protecting this natural asset. The Bali Starling belongs to the people of Bali and is the mascot of the island, explained Catur. www.balidiscovery.com

NRL, Brumbies collide over Buderus deal

"As Danny enters his final NRL season before retirement, we have encouraged him, as we do with all our players, to engage in wide ranging work experience in preparation for life after football," Gidley said. Mattiske said the NRL provides avenues for players to expand their scope for postfootball careers. "In conjunction with the RLPA [Rugby League Players Association] we provide a range of specialist services to assist players in maximising off-field careers," he said. These are all available to Danny and all players."

A burglar broke into a house one night. He shined his flashlight around, looking for valuables when a voice in the dark said, 'Jesus knows you're here.' He nearly jumped out of his skin, clicked his flashlight off, and froze. When he heard nothing more, after a bit, he shook his head and continued. Just as he pulled the stereo out so he could disconnect the wires, clear as a bell he heard 'Jesus is watching you.' Freaked out, he shined his light around frantically, looking for the source of the voice. Finally, in the corner of the room, his flashlight beam came to rest on a parrot. 'Did you say that?' he hissed at the parrot. 'Yep', the parrot confessed, then squawked, 'I'm just trying to warn you that he iswatching you.' The burglar relaxed. 'Warn me, huh? Who in the world are you?' 'Moses,' replied the bird. 'Moses?' the burglar laughed. 'What kind of people would name a bird Moses?' 'The kind of people that would name a Rottweiler Jesus.'

It was a small town and the patrolman was making his evening rounds. As he was checking a used car lot, he came upon two little old ladies sitting in a used car He stopped and asked them why they were sitting there in the car or were they trying to steal it? 'Heavens no, we bought it.' 'Then why don't you drive it away.' 'We can't drive.' Then why did you buy it?' 'We were told that if we bought a Used car here we'd get screwed .... so we're just waiting.

The NRL has blocked the Super Rugby franchise's move to sign Buderus as a collision coach, saying no third party agreement has been lodged as the salary cap requires. The league issued a statement seeking "an immediate explanation" from the Knights with regards to the deal. "It is hard to envisage any circumstance where an agreement could be approved that allowed a current NRL player to promote another code competing in the same market as an NRL team," interim NRL chief executive Shane Mattiske said. "The announcement today which saw Danny at a press conference in another code's training gear underlines potential issues. "...as much as we respect Danny's intentions we do not see any way in which the proposal can be pursued." Brumbies boss Andrew Fagan told Grandstand the Brumbies would simply have to wear it. "If it doesn't work for the NRL then so be it," Fagan said. "We will have to look for someone else but we don't have anyone in mind at the moment." Fagan said he thought that Buderus had the Knights' blessing but evidently not the NRL's. "It's certainly an unfortunate series of events," he said earlier on Thursday. "We tried to provide Danny with an opportunity to pursue some coaching, which he understood he was keen to do. "That was endorsed and supported by the Knights organisation and Wayne Bennett but unfortunately the NRL weren't aware of the deal. "They've got some issues with it we would like to see those issues worked through but if that is not the case then we just have to move on." Fagan said that because Newcastle had endorsed the deal, he assumed the NRL had as well. The Knights have since said in a statement that the final agreement between Buderus and the Brumbies had not been seen by the club and needs to be submitted to and approved by the NRL. But Newcastle chief executive Matt Gidley did say the club had encouraged Buderus to seek varied work experience.

Newcastle hosted the healthier slice of the free-to- how it pans out. Dragons in the round-one air TV pie in 2013. Following a 2012 in which they appeared on Channel Nine just twice during the regular season, the Raiders are adamant they deserve more exposure and recognition after emerging as one of the most exciting teams in the NRL in their unexpected charge to the semi-finals. Raiders boss Don Furner has requested his club hosts high-rating St George Illawarra in one of the marquee Thursday night games that both Channel Nine and the NRL have scheduled to kick off the new $1 billion broadcast deal in the first month of the new season. On the back of the club's entertaining brand of football and a roster that boasts some of the most exciting names in the game, Furner said it was time Canberra received greater free-to-air recognition - and vital exposure for the club's sponsors. "We want something that amounts to our fair share," he said.

"I understand the commercial realities of it all and I know Channel Nine paid a lot of money for the rights but there has to be a better way. "We had two games on Channel Nine last year and, if it goes that way again, we could win 19 out of our first 19 games and

"The only Channel Nine game we had at home this year was against the Bulldogs (in round 23) that was a reward for how we were going," Furner said. "We are hoping the NRL will apply the same sort of thinking to the new draw given how well we went at the end of last season." The NRL will release the draw next week for the first 20 rounds of the new season. The round-one Thursday night season opener is tipped to be between arch-rivals Sydney Roosters and South Sydney. Furner said he hoped the Raiders' Channel Nine allowance would be raised to six games in 2013, starting with a Thursday night jewel which would be an early-season boon to the club, its

Champion Chris is looking ahead to unification fight

RI's Unbeatable Dragon: WBA super featherweight champion Chris John (right) throws a punch at his Thai rival Chonlatarn Piriyapinyo during his title defense at the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore on Friday. Chris retained his title by defeating Chonlatarn over 12 tough rounds of fighting.
Chris John's success in defense of his WBA featherweight belt on Friday is likely to pave the way for a unification bout with fellow champions from other associations that will bring more, bigger purses to the Indonesian 33-year-old. Among the champions in this category are Daniel Ponce de Leon (WBC), Billy Dib (IBF) and Orlando Salido (WBO). The list includes fellow Indonesians Daud Yordan (IBO) and Celestino Caballero (WBA), who exceeded Chris John's championship status after the Indonesian was elevated to super champion. For sure, I will not put Chris against Daud, promoter Raja Sapta Oktohari said. Daud retained the IBO featherweight belt fighting against Choijiljavyn Choi Tseveenpuver in the show, promoted as the Dragon Fire World Boxing Championship, at the Marina Bay Sands Convention Center, Singapore. When asked about future fights by ring announcer Jimmy Lennon Jr., Chris turned to trainer Craig Christian, seemingly querying what plans the Australian had for the boxer's future. Let's see, he said. Chris dominated Thai Chonlatarn Piriyapinyo to emerge the winner by a unanimous points decision with the three judges scoring 117-111, 119-109, 119-109 as he defended his belt for the 17th time. I tried hard to throw punches to the head and the body, but he kept moving, said Chris, who built his fight record to 47 wins and 2 draws. Piriyapinyo dropped to 441-0. In the undercard bout, Daud defeated Choi also on a unanimous points win, 117-111, 119-110, 118-110 in his title bout as champion. Daud dominated the fight and knocked Choi down in the last round but the England-based Mongolian survived the onslaught up to the bell. Thank God, because God gave me opportunity to bring back the belt to Indonesia, Daud said. I was surprised that he was very strong. It's hard for me to knock him out but it's OK. I give the win to my country. The victories were welcomed by Indonesian fans at ringside and millions back home. Among the fans at the ringside was Youth and Sports Minister Andi Mallarangeng. He stopped over from Macau en route attending the Asian Olympic Committee convention, where Indonesia failed to impress in its bid to host the 2019 Asian Games. www.thejakartapost.com

Ask Martha

Dear Martha, My husband and I are happily married and have been for 6 years. Just recently we have had a few more arguments relating to him thinking that I always take sides with others rather than him. He had an altercation with a staff member and tells me about it, then I respond in such a way that he believes I'm on the staff member's side and that I don't support him. This happens quite regularly to the point where, I'm beginning to question if it's something I really am doing not knowingly on purpose! I know I'm the type of person who can play devil's advocate, I also know that I avoid any argument like the plague and I try to be friends with everyone. I would say that I am the type of person that really tries hard to get along with everyone as I don't like others not liking me. So, is this sticking up for others rather than my husband more about my own persona being at jeopardy? I'm trying to establish whether this is my husband being defensive of his own actions and not wanting to hear constructive criticism, OR is this something that perhaps I do and need to address myself to be able to support my husband more empathetically. Irene Dear Irene, It's pretty simple. Stop taking sides. Stop playing devil's advocate and letting him know you can see someone else's point of view. This wouldn't matter except your husband is telling you clearly he wants you to listen to him and give him your support not tell him where he's gone wrong. Is this burying your true feelings and making nice about a situation? Of course it is. But in a good marriage you learn to shut KUTA TOWNHOUSES @ 0361-761464, 081337207304 up sometimes. You certainly learn you don't always have to be right about things and that showing them support and trust and not needing them to see things your way is a loving act - not some sacrifice of will. I don't mean you can't speak your mind. Speak up. But don't speak up just to tell him he's in the wrong about some pissy fight with a workmate. Instead sit back and say very little. Don't try to solve it for him or be the hero. Be a good listener instead. If he asks you what you think say: It sounds like you are incredibly frustrated and I can understand why. If he asks what you think he should do, put it back on him. Tell him you know he'll sort this problem out eventually. This is not about keeping quiet so your husband is deluded about the way he comes across to others. Be a good listener. Mostly that's what people want. If your husband is not good at taking constructive criticism then let him work out his own problems, especially if they are petty or small. Martha

Lowy watched from the wings. "In that regard, other codes should be concerned. "Foundation stones are in place that will be pretty hard to shift. "If football gets its act together the other codes need to be really worried about it." Gallop should know. He used to be one of the worriers. Now he's keen to establish street cred in his brave new world. He grew up watching Jimmy Hill on England's Match Of The Day TV show. He used to watch the Canberra Arrows when Johnny Warren coached them. His son and daughter both played the game and he would coach and occasionally referee at Sydney's Queen's Park. He follows unfashionable West Brom in England's Premier League, thanks to a fanatical old friend. Rugby league is a passion. The most he can say about football is that he has always liked and admired it. But few people in Australian sport have an insider's knowledge of what he is now up against.

Gallop's anecdote confirms what football people have long thought rival codes think about their game - they are worried by it. Not so much in the short term, maybe, but certainly the long. Football is the most popular game on the planet and Australia is a prosperous, growing, multicultural nation whose team should now grace the game's world stage every four years. David Gallop leapt to his feet like thousands of others as he watched John Aloisi boot Australia into the World Cup at Sydney's Olympic stadium in 2005, then checked himself and quickly sat down again.
"With my rugby league hat on, I remember thinking this could be bad. The sleeping giant of Australian sport just got a giant prod," the former NRL boss said on his first day in charge of the aspiring Goliath. "I was one of the first in the stadium to sit down." Last month the Socceroos had Gallop leaping out of his seat again when Archie Thompson scored a late winner in a World Cup qualifier against Iraq in Doha. This time he was sitting in his lounge room. "And this time I didn't have to sit down," Gallop said as he fronted the media for the first time

"Thriller" is a song recorded by American recording artist Michael Jackson, composed by Rod Templeton, and produced by Quincy Jones. It is the seventh and final single from his sixth studio album of the same name. It was released on November 12, 1983 in most countries and January 23, 1984 in the United States by Epic Records. The song has appeared on multiple greatest hits compilation albums from Jackson, including HIStory (1995), Number Ones (2003), The Essential Michael Jackson (2005), and Michael Jackson's This Is It (2009) and it was remixed to the Immortal album in 2011. The song, which has a voice-over from actor Vincent Price, had originally been titled "Starlight". The song's instruments include a bassline and synthesizer. In the song, sound effects such as a creaking door, thunder, feet walking on wooden planks, winds and howling dogs can be heard, and the lyrics contain frightening themes and elements. "Thriller" received positive reviews from critics, though the song was outshone by its music video. "Thriller" became Jackson's seventh top-ten single on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart from the album, while reaching the top of the charts in France and Belgium and the top ten in other countries. "Thriller" was adapted into a highly successful music video, known independently as Michael Jackson's Thriller. At fourteen minutes the video is substantially longer than the song, which ties together a narrative featuring Jackson and actress Ola Ray in a setting heavily inspired by horror films of the 1950s. In the video's most iconic scene, Jackson leads other actors costumed as zombies in a choreographed dance routine. Though it garnered some criticism for its occult theme and violent imagery, the video was immediately popular and received high critical acclaim, being nominated for six MTV Video Music Awards in 1984 and winning three. In 2009 it was added to the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress, the first music video ever selected. "Thriller" was written by Rod Templeton, and produced by Quincy Jones. "Thriller" was originally titled "Starlight",contrary to other reports of the title "Starlight Love".While the song was titled "Starlight", the song's hook lyrics were "Starlight! Starlight sun...", but after the song was changed to "Thriller" the hook was rewritten to "Thriller! In the night..."Temperton commented, While Temperton was writing "Thriller" he stated that he'd "always envisioned" a "talking section at the end" on the song, but did not really know what "to do with it", until deciding "to have somebody, a famous voice, in the horror genre, to do this vocal."Jones' then-wife, Peggy Lipton, who knew Vincent Price, suggested Price for the vocal part, which Price agreed to do. Recording Thriller", along with other songs from Thriller, was recorded by Jackson over the course of eight weeks, in 1982. Jackson recorded the song at Westlake Recording Studios on Santa Monica Boulevard in Los Angeles, California. Bruce Swedien, the song's engineer, said of the song being recorded, When we started 'Thriller', the first day at Westlake, we were all there and Quincy [Jones, the producer] walked in followed by me and Michael and Rod Temperton and some of the other people. Quincy turned to us and he said, 'OK guys, we're here to save the recording industry.' Now that's a pretty big responsibility but he meant it. And that's why those albums, and especially 'Thriller', sound so incredible. The basic thing is, everybody who was involved gave 150 percent Quincy's like a director of a movie and I'm like a director of photography, and it's Quincy's job to cast it. Quincy can find the people and he gives us the inspiration to do what we do.

Pope Benedict visited a home for the elderly and told its residents that life can be beautiful at every age.
" I f e e l younger after being here," the pope, 85, said as he was leaving a home run by the Roman Catholic Sant' Egidio Community in a Rome neighborhood near the Vatican. "In every age we have to know how to discover the presence of the blessings of the Lord and the riches that they contain," he told the residents.

that the quality of a society and a civilization can be judged by how they treat their elderly. The Sant' Egidio community, which has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize several times, runs h o m e l e s s shelters, AIDS clinics and homes for the elderly on several continents. In 1992 it brokered an end to the 15-year civil war in Mozambique, where it now runs programs to stop the passage of HIV/AIDS from mothers to their children.

Australia's Casey Stoner finished third in his last ever MotoGP race before retirement as Honda teammate Dani Pedrosa won the Valencia Grand Prix on Monday morning.
W o r l d champion Jorge Lorenzo was denied a victorious season finale on home soil when he crashed out while leading an incident-packed race to hand victory to Pedrosa. Stoner pipped Yamaha's Alvaro Bautista to third 23 seconds behind Pedrosa, who had held off Lorenzo and Briton Cal Crutchlow, who also crashed out with seven laps to go. Japan's Yamaha pilot Katsuyuki Nakasuga, standing in for injured American Ben Spies, finished second. The podium finish comes a week after winning at his unofficial home circuit at Phillip Island for the sixth time. The Honda mechanics paid tribute to Stoner as he crossed the line and hung out a sign reading "Going fishing" for the 27-year-old, a possible hint of how he may fill some of his time after falling out of love with the sport. Stoner told reporters he had ridden a careful race as he was worried about hurting the foot he damaged in Indianapolis in August. "We went way too late to the slick tires but we brought it home and got on the podium and there are a lot worse ways to end my career," he said. "I want to thank my team,

"I have never started from the pit lane before and I was full of doubts. "I made a mistake when I was right behind Jorge and then he made one himself. It's fantastic to win the last race." In the Moto2 category, champion Marc Marquez, who will replace Stoner at Honda next season, charged from last on the grid to win ahead of Spanish compatriots Julian Simon and Nico Terol. Briton Danny Kent took victory in Moto3 ahead of Italian champion Sandro Cortese and Zulfahmi Khairuddin of Malaysia.

In a chaotic start to the 18th and final race of the season, several riders including Pedrosa had to change to bikes with slick tyres after they realised on the warm-up lap that the track was quickly drying out after a damp morning. Lorenzo already had his slick tires and raced into an early lead before Pedrosa, who had started from the pit lane after the tire change, climbed more than 15 positions in only seven laps and hauled

The AFL will look to overhaul its concussion management guidelines following an international conference on the issue. The AFL is proposing changes to include a requirement for club doctors to make greater use of video footage of the injury incident in their assessment of player fitness. There will also be a necessity for medical supervision of any follow-up selfassessment tests conducted by players. The AFL had three representatives including AFL medical commissioner Dr Peter Harcourt at the Fourth International Consensus Conference on Concussion in Sport in Zurich last week. Leading sporting bodies from around the world including the IOC, FIFA, the NFL, NHL and IRB attended. "This global conference has again provided us with invaluable information that can be applied to our own concussion management policies," Dr Harcourt said. "It confirmed that the AFL concussion strategy is robust and reflects current best practice." The evidence reinforced the AFL's approach that there is no definitive scientific evidence that helmets specifically prevent concussion or other brain injuries. The AFL will also revise its concussion approach for children including those involved in the Auskick program. The new consensus guidelines will be released next March.

Suspension bridges, covered bridges, wind-and-rain bridges, rope bridges, ornamental bridges. There's a practical purpose to every bridge; that river has to be crossed or that gorge spanned. But it's the romance, legend and spectacle of a bridge that led online travel consultants Cheapflights.com (www.cheapflights.com) to create its list of the Top 10 most impressive bridges around the world. Reuters has not endorsed list: 1. Tower Bridge, London, United Kingdom The world saw Tower Bridge this year during Britain's remarkable summer of Diamond Jubilee festivities, the Olympics and Paralympic Games. It was built in 1894, all Victorian Gothic with Cornish granite and Portland stone, close to the Tower of London from which it gets its name. Standing 42 meters (yards) above the legendary River Thames, its walkways are vantage points for many London landmarks. Plus, it's the only bridge on the Thames that can be raised to let boats pass. The bascules are raised approximately 1,000 times per year. 2. Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, USA No list of bridges is complete without this orange-vermillion wonder that spans the strait linking San Francisco Bay with the Pacific Ocean. It has stood above the Golden Gate, often shrouded in fog, for 75 years. At 4,200 feet long, the Golden Gate Bridge was, for almost 30 years, the longest in the world. In a city of superb seebefore-you-die attractions, the bridge tops the list. Visitors can walk or bike across it. Alternatively, the Bridge Pavilion tells the story of the bridge and has a range of souvenirs for friends and family back home. 3. Lions Gate Bridge, Vancouver, Canada This is the bridge that Guinness built. Really. The Lions Gate Bridge, known officially as the First Narrows Bridge, spans Burrard Inlet and connects the City of Vancouver to the North Shore (North Vancouver and West Vancouver). The Lions Gate refers to the mountain peaks (The Lions) that are visible to drivers heading north. The wealthy Guinness family invested heavily in West Vancouver and part of the deal was that they - through their British Pacific Properties Co. - would build all roads and water lines. Knowing that they needed to make the area more accessible, they were involved with the construction of the bridge and, in 1986, gifted its lights. 4. Sydney Harbour Bridge, Sydney, Australia The bridge is the largest steel-arch bridge

the end of the 16th century, the bridge was upgraded to sweeter-smelling businesses for goldsmiths and jewelers. Not too different to who's there now. Lying across the Arno at its narrowest point, it's just 98feet long. 8. Victoria Falls Bridge, Zimbabwe/Zambia The Zambezi River roars beneath the Victoria Falls Bridge, which links two countries: Zimbabwe and Zambia. On one side is Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe and on the other, Livingstone, Zambia. A feat of Victorian design and engineering, it took just 14 months to build. To press home its Victorian credentials, it was opened by Charles Darwin's son, George, in 1905. It's a road, railway and footway and a launch platform for thrilling bungee jumps. At 650feet long and 420 feet above the river, it's a close second to the spectacular Victoria Falls (Mosi-oa-Tunya). 9. Pont Alexandre III, Paris, France Pont Neuf is Paris's oldest bridge - and one of its most famous - but the Pont Alexandre III is the most extravagant and highly decorated bridge on the Seine. This arch bridge (connecting the Champs-lyses quarter with the Invalides and Eiffel Tower quarters) was built for the Universal Exposition of 1900, the great world's fair. Russia's Tsar Nicholas II lay the first brick (it was at a time when France was courting Russia as an ally) and it was named after the Tsar's father Alexander III. This historic monument is studded with gilded-bronze winged horses, compositions in copper that represent the nymphs of the Seine (the nymphs of the Neva in Saint Petersburg are represented downstream) and ornate lamp posts (candelabras really) that are adorned with cherubs. 10. Teufelsbrcke, Switzerland This is the bridge that was built by the devil. Or so it is said. The story goes that the devil built the bridge and in exchange for his engineering and construction skills, he'd receive the first soul to cross it. The canny villagers sent a goat instead of a person, and, enraged by this, the devil tried to destroy his newly constructed bridge by throwing a boulder (the Teufelsstein, the devil's stone) at it. However, catching sight of an old woman carrying a cross, he took fright and ran away, dropping the stone as he went. Myths aside, the Teufelsbrcke spans the Reuss River high up in the Swiss mountains in the canton of Uri. It provides access to the St. Gotthard Pass. The bridge that is in use now is actually the third bridge. The first bridge (wooden and built by the devil) was built in 1230 and the second (built in the 1820s) is located close to this "new" (1950s) concrete bridge.

The Adelaide Crows and star forward Kurt Tippett have been formally charged with draft tampering and breaking the AFL's rules on player payments. The Crows' Chief Executive Steven Trigg and former Football Operations manager John Reid have also been charged with breaching AFL rules and have been ordered to appear alongside Tippett before the AFL Commission next Monday. The Crows will be asked to explain why they should not be stripped of draft picks for allegedly breaching the league's salary cap. Adelaide is accused of deliberate deceit by promising Tippett $200,000 outside of his contract and for suggesting it be kept secret. The charges are that in September or October 2009, the accused engaged in "conduct prejudicial to the draft" and that between September 2009 and October 2012, they engaged in "conduct in breach of the Total Player Payments provisions in the Rules".

was always the Club's intention to comply fully with all AFL rules on the draft and player payments." Adelaide said the club had had an exemplary record and reputation of compliance with AFL rules governing the draft and player payments. "We have the highest regard for those rules and the reason they exist," the club said. Tippett will be fighting for his immediate playing future after his $1 million a year trade to the Sydney Swans was blocked. Other sides, including the Western Sydney Giants, have since expressed interest in drafting the 25year-old. However if Tippett is found guilty, he faces suspension or being deregistered from the competition. In addition to the loss of draft picks, the club is facing a possible fine and has previously said it will accept the AFL's verdict.

in the world. It's not the longest (that honor belongs to the New River Gorge in West Virginia), but it's one of the most recognizable symbols of Australia. It's 1,149 meters (3,770 feet) long and its arch span is 503 meters. The top of the arch is 134 meters above the sea and the clearance for shipping under the deck is a spacious 49 meters. Eager to climb to the Pylon Lookout? There are 200 steps to ascend to get to one of Sydney's oldest tourist attractions. If you want to climb it, you can do that too for about $218. In overalls and secured to a safety line, you can climb 1,500 meters over the arch. 5. Glenfinnan Viaduct, Glenfinnan, Scotland Fans of the Harry Potter films will recognize this as the railway viaduct that the Hogwarts Express chugs across. It's not the only film to feature it. It "starred" in Charlotte Gray, Monarch of the Glen, Stone of Destiny and Ring of Bright Water too. Built by Sir Robert McAlpine at the end of the 19th century, the viaduct is composed of 21 arches, each spanning 15 metres and has a maximum height of 30 metres offering sumptuous views down to Loch Shiel below. The railway viaduct is on the West Highland Line in Glenfinnan, Lochaber in the Highlands and a round-trip ticket, between mid-May and the end of October, will set you back 32 pounds (around $50). 6. Si-o-se Pol, Isfahan, Iran Si-o-se Pol, which means the Bridge of 33 Arches, has stood in Isfahan, Iran, since the 17th century. Spanning the river Zayandeh Rud, it's one of 11 bridges in Isfahan. It's one of the most famous examples of Safavid bridge design although Khadjou Bridge is considered to be more beautiful. There are two rows of 33 arches and its yellow brick and limestone masonry give it that buttery softness that, when the sun hits, makes it appear to melt into the river. It's a charming bridge of alcoves, where you can sit and admire the view. Or, in the tea house, sip cups of steaming tea. 7. Ponte Vecchio, Florence, Italy Ponte Vecchio means "old bridge" in Italian and it's certainly that. The bridge on the River Arno was mentioned in a document as far back as 996 AD. Destroyed a couple of times but always rebuilt, it was spared by the retreating Germans in 1944 on the orders of Hitler (although the medieval buildings on each side of the bridge were demolished, blocking access). Once upon a time, bridges were places of commerce with butchers, tanners and fishmongers plying their trade there. By

Crows and Tippett to answer charges

The AFL says the hearing, set for November 19, could last for two days. In a statement this week the Crows said they were determined to explain their position to members, sponsors and stakeholders as soon as possible. "The Club notes that this matter is being investigated by the AFL as a direct result of our decision to report it and offer full assistance to the investigation," the Crows said in the statement. "Throughout the past three years and the recent trading period it
