Max Marks: 80

(a) Obtain an expression for the force exerted by a jet of water on a fixed vertical plate in the direction of the jet.

(b) A jet of water of diameter 75 mm moving with a velocity of 25 m/s strikes a fixed plate in such a way that the angle between the jet and plate is 600 . Find the force exerted by the jet on the plate (i) in the direction normal to the plate (ii) in the direction of jet. 2 (a) Explain the working principle of a Pelton turbine with a neat sketch. (b) A pelton wheel has a mean bucket speed of 10 m/s with a jet of water flowing at the rate of 700 litres/s under a head of 30 meters. The buckets deflect the jet through an angle of 1600 . Calculate the power given by water to the runner and hydraulic efficiency of the turbine. Coefficient of velocity as 0.98. 3 (a) Define specific speed of a turbine and derive an expression for the same. (b) A turbine develops 7225 KW power under a head of 25 meters at 135 r.p.m. Calculate specific speed of turbine and state the type of turbine. 4 (b) A single acting reciprocating pump, running at 50 r.p.m delivers 0.01 3 / of water. The diameter of piston is 200 mm and stroke length 400 mm. Determine (a) theoretical discharge of pump (b) coefficient of discharge (c) slip and percentage slip of pump (a) Derive an expression for discharge through a single acting reciprocating pump. (a) Obtain an expression for minimum speed for the starting of centrifugal pump. (b) The diameters of an impeller of a centrifugal pump at inlet and outlet are 30 cm and 60 cm. Determine minimum starting speed of pump if it works against a head of 30 m. 6 (a) Draw and discuss characteristics curves of centrifugal pump (b) Two geometrically similar pumps are running at the same speed of 1000 r.p.m. One pump has an impeller diameter of 0.30 meter and lifts water at the rate of 20 liters per second against a head of 15 meters. Determine the head and impeller diameter of the other pump to deliver half the discharge. 7 (a) Draw a neat sketch and explain the principle and working of a hydraulic press. (b) A hydraulic press has a ram of 300 mm diameter and a plunger of 45 mm diameter.
