CIVIL WAR SOLDIERS OF PORT BYRON AND MENTZ

PUROSE: DESCRIPTION:

In honor of the sesquicentennial anniversary, this project serves to document soldiers connected to our community that served in the War of the Rebellion 1861-1865. The initial database consulted was the Town Clerks Registers of Men who served in the Civil War, also known as Series No. 13774. This series is comprised of each townships quota as mandated in Chapter 690 of the Laws of 1865 under the Division of Military and Naval Affairs. Each Town Clerk was to report a variety of details ranging from the soldiers date of birth, parents, regiment, service record and burial location, if known. Our report was dated Nov. 9, 1865 by then Town Clerk A.R. Christian. Much thought was given to the report. In many instances Mr. Christian provided the maiden names of the soldiers mother. Not all townships took such care to do so. This record serves as a tremendous genealogical record. Our clerk included some men that are recorded as enlisting here but mustered into service at other locations. In addition, several names of deceased soldiers were reported in the Mentz 1865 State Census. All of the soldiers names from the various sources were retained in the analysis of this project. I also retained data on soldiers who served as substitutes or who are buried here. This provides a more complete record of Port Byron and Mentzs contributions in the Civil War. Series 13774 is available at the NYS Archives. Daniel J. Linke digitized the record for Mentz in 1991. It is now available by subscription at Ancestry.com in a searchable database. Instead of entering our township or village name in the enlistment field, I used it as a keyword. This yielded soldiers who reported their birth as Port Byron or Mentz but served elsewhere. I then merged soldiers from various military lists as well as our cemetery index on Cayuga Genweb. On a limited bases, I even consulted Google Books to find published family histories to confirm residency or location of birth. This project has exceeded 80 hours to complete.

DISCLAIMER:

Tabulating a list of soldiers from any given location poses a unique challenge. Men were offered a cash incentive called a bounty. The amount of the bounty varied so soldiers from one township may have traveled elsewhere to enlist to collect the additional cash. Likewise, soldiers outside our boundary could have enlisted here if our bounty rate was higher. Readers should be aware that variations in age and spelling of names might exist between the various sources. There may also be a significant difference of soldier ages between the Town Clerk Series 13774 and other military enlistment records. One must keep in mind age restrictions for service. Often a soldier reported they were older or younger to ensure they would pass the inspection process and placed into service. In fact, all of our soldiers over the age of 50 did not disclose their proper age. Many of these men desired to defend the Union, even if it meant they had to falsify their age in order to do so. USCT: Our community had a strong presence in the United States Colored Troops. John Wesley Freeman One soldier in particular that deserves mention is Corporal John Wesley Freeman. It is suspected that he may be related to the Freeman family of Auburn, NY. Many may recall that name in New Yorks history being the landmark insanity case established by William H. Seward in 1847. The relationship of his father Robert to that of William of the insanity case requires investigation. John Wesleys service as an officer in the colored troops is significant. Officers for these regiments were traditionally white. The regimental descriptive book described John as of mulatto complexion with black eyes and hair. He enlisted as a private and became an officer by appointment. His enlistment location is shown as Providence, Rhode Island. However, his family was living here in 1860. The family was listed as black in that census. They lived in proximity to the Ames family, being just a few entries away from them in the census. John Wesley Freeman is listed as being Free on April 19, 1861 and was able to spell his own name. He was a member of the Lockwood Post #175 GAR and is buried at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Port Byron. John H. Thomas Another soldier worth mention is John H. Thomas, a black soldier born in NYS. He saw active service at Deep Bottom, Chapins Farm, Darbytown Road, before Petersburg as well as Appomattox Courthouse. His occupation in 1900 was that of Junk Peddler. He lies at rest in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery at the Lockwood Post GAR monument. This was my first introduction to non-segregated burials of blacks in our cemeteries, something that makes me very proud of Port Byron. He lies as the lone black soldier at the GAR monument in good company with his fellow white comrades. John Stewart He was a black man born in Virginia who enlisted into the 20th USCT from Montezuma. He signed his enlistment papers with an X mark. What was is his story? What brought him from Virginia to Central, NY only to fight in the Civil War for the Union? John Stewart was a member of the Lockwood Post #175 GAR and is buried at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. These are but a few examples of our black soldiers. Joining the USCT as officers would be our Nathan Munger and Benjamin Webb Thomas. Nathan went on to serve as a State Representative for the Grand Army of the Republic. B.W. Thompson once owned the Port Byron Gazette.

Having men of color as an integral part of the Lockwood Post is significant. As researchers go more in-depth into the history of the various GAR Posts, many are discovering black soldiers as members. Port Byron is one such community that did not exclude members based on race. CONCLUSION:

Port Byron and Mentz continues to provide strong military support. However, much about our experience remains untapped. Over time, if descendants contribute their stories, Im hopeful that we can continue to build this project to make it a holding place for biographies of the many brave men who answered President Lincolns call in Americas war between brothers. The goal of my project is to bring awareness to our contributions in the War of the Rebellion. Our long list of immigrants is not surprising when you look at what was happening here in the 1860s. At this time, we were a bustling community with plentiful employment impacted by an Erie Canal that fostered industry. We have long had a progressive history, one that includes African Americans who chose to work and make lives for their families here. While for this time period, we still described our neighbors by race and ethnicity, we had acceptance. It is humbling to find no segregation in our burial grounds where white soldiers are at rest beside those of color and/or of foreign birth. Richard T. King once reported that Port Byron and Mentz contributed 257 soldiers to the cause. That number may also reflect soldiers who moved here post war as of the early 1900s. My analysis suggests that our enlistment figure is closer to 225 men. However, when you combine the soldiers resting in our cemeteries today, along with those that reported having been born here, that number climbs significantly. As new information is added, readers will be able to follow future revisions by the file name. This report will be added under the military links on my blog as ver. 1. The file number will advance sequentially for all future updates as they are posted.
