Reference Collection Evaluation

Preliminary Evaluation In an effort to evaluate a reference collection in a Media Center, I visited my primary library site of Oakwood Elementary School. While I was there, I ran reports that gave me a look into the current reference collection at Oakwood. Our reference collection currently has 444 items which include encyclopedias, almanacs, Lets Discover books, dictionaries, thesauruses, Amazing Animals books, along with many different historical books. After looking at the age of the current books in the collection, it was pretty obvious the types of books that needed to be weeded. Of those that are weeded, I determined which of those need to be replaced based on the current need in the school and former check out records. After analyzing the age and need of the book in our collection, I determined that we had a large amount of career and science based books that needed to be weeded based on age but should also be replaced based on the number of checkouts and school curriculum need. This year, our school started a new career class for the fourth and fifth grades and there is a new need to have up-to-date career books in our reference collection. We also have several science books that are more than 40 years old that still cover many of our current standards. These books are still utilized according to our check out record but the pictures are very outdated and should be replaced with more up-todate books that will interest the students more. In addition to these two areas, we have also had some demand for both world and U.S. atlases. My main focus will be to order based on these three needs: career, science, and atlases. The media specialist said that our library will get a budget of about $4,000 but no more than about $1,000 would be spent on the reference section of the library.

was said to be very up-to-date to even include job hunting through social networking. This collection provides information on 94 different industries in its first volume alone. First Look: Science was reviewed by Library Media Connection. They said that this new collection was great for primary teachers. The set includes information about forces of motion, life cycles, seasons, color and much more. The set is designed so that each book of the set is like one science lesson.
