EXAMINATION FELLOWSHIPS 2011: FURTHER PARTICULARS There will be an election at All Souls on Saturday, 5 November 2011 to two Examination Fellowships, if candidates of sufficient merit present themselves.

Eligibility
The examination is open to any candidate who meets ALL the following conditions: (i) has matriculated at Oxford University or will have registered for a higher degree at Oxford University by 1 October 2011; (ii) has completed all the examinations necessary for a first BA or equivalent degree in any subject whether at the University of Oxford or elsewhere; and, (iii) normally, has successfully completed such examinations not more than ten terms before the relevant election, i.e. from Summer 2008 onwards.

Terms of Fellowship
The Fellowships are for seven years and cannot be extended. They are open to those who intend to pursue an academic career and the College pays the University fees of Fellows registered for a higher degree in Oxford. They are also open to those who, while intending to take up non-academic work (such as the practice of the law, politics, the arts, diplomacy, etc.), nevertheless wish to maintain and strengthen their links with Oxford academic life. It is therefore a requirement that all Examination Fellows in the first two years of their Fellowship pursue a course of study or training approved by the College. An Examination Fellow will be a member of the Governing Body and is obliged to attend College Meetings (three per annum) and Election Meetings (two per annum) and may be elected to College committees in due course. Fellows will be entitled to rooms, dinners, and lunches without charge. Such Fellows are conventionally required to reside (or dine) in College for at least twenty-eight days in each academic term of the first year of tenure but the College is prepared to consider deferment of this residence in exceptional cases. Nonacademic Fellows (see 'Terms of Fellowship' above) can comply with the College's residential convention in the first year of Fellowship by, for example, spending the weekends during term in College and the weekdays working elsewhere.

Remuneration, Allowances, and Entitlements

During the first two years Fellows receive a stipend or scholarship allowance, which they may supplement, of 14,842* per annum, and may be eligible for a housing allowance of

5,185* per annum. At the end of that period the Fellowship will (with the approval of the College) be extended for a further five years, during which (a) a Fellow who decides to take up or continue non-academic work will receive a stipend of 2,862* per annum; (b) a Fellow who decides to take up or continue academic work will receive a stipend of 20,543* per annum, rising to 26,175* per annum if a certain amount of lecturing is undertaken; otherwise the stipend will be 18,694* per annum rising to 23,819* per annum, plus in each case a housing allowance of 5,937 per annum, if eligible. Academic Fellows may draw on academic allowances up to 3,103 per annum. *Please note all salaries and allowances are reviewed annually.

Applications
Prospective candidates should make applications on-line by Monday, 5 September 2011. Candidates must also ask their College Secretary or Academic Administrator to send a brief note to the College Secretary certifying that the applicant is eligible to sit the Examination (for a template of the type of letter, see the College website, www.all-souls.ox.ac.uk). Those who do not for good cause meet the normal eligibility criteria but nevertheless wish to be admitted to the Examination should make their case when prompted on the on-line application form or communicate with the Warden, marking the correspondence 'Fellowship Examination'.

Examination Details
The examination will be held in the College, starting on Thursday, 29 September at 9.30 a.m. and ending on Friday, 30 September at 5.00 p.m. (except for candidates who take the Classical Studies papers see below). For most candidates, the examination will consist of four papers of three hours each:

two papers in Law, History+, Philosophy, Economics, Politics, English Literature, or Classical Studies++; two General Papers.

+The History papers will cover:

Paper I: political, constitutional, and ecclesiastical history; Paper II: social, economic, and cultural history.

Each paper will contain a section of questions on History of the Ancient World. ++ Classical Studies I (Greek world) and II (Roman world) will contain questions on Ancient History and Classical Literature.

Candidates who take the Classical Studies papers or answer exclusively questions about Ancient History on the History papers will also be required to take a Translation paper at 9.30 a.m. on Saturday, 1 October. Candidates may answer questions from one paper only in each session of the Examination. However, they may ask to see up to two papers in any specialist session. The College thinks this may be helpful to candidates who have done Joint Honour Schools.

Past Papers
Examination papers from previous years may be seen on the College website (www.allsouls.ox.ac.uk) or on application to the College Secretary. However, it should be noted that the single word essay paper has now been dropped with effect from 2010.
