BENTONE 1000
Rheological Additive

BENTONE 1000 rheological additive, is a new high efficiency organoclay for low to intermediate polarity organic liquids and solvents. This new rheological additive is designed for use in the dispersion phase of paint making without the use of a chemical activator. With greater efficiency and better reproducibility, BENTONE 1000 gives the paint manufacturer added time, energy and raw material cost savings.

Applications
BENTONE 1000 additive is an efficient replacement for organoclay additives in coatings containing aliphatic solvents (mineral spirits, VM&P naphtha, etc.) trade sales paints, varnishes, light industrial finishes, traffic paints, industrial maintenance paints and marine coatings.

Advantages
Easy to use Highly efficient development of rheological additive Very consistent rheological properties Eliminates pregels Eliminates need for chemical activators in conventional solvent systems

Incorporation
BENTONE 1000 additive increases rheological performance using typical incorporation procedures during the manufacturing process. This rheological additive should be incorporated in the dispersion phase under high shear. A pigmented cowles dispersion is sufficient. A polar additive is not required. As with conventional organoclays, BENTONE 1000 additive does not disperse efficiently in cold systems. The best performance conditions are achieved when dispersion takes place at or above 24C (75F) in the pigment grind. BENTONE 1000 it is not sensitive to high temperatures. There is generally no need to pregel BENTONE 1000 additive. However, if desired, BENTONE 1000 can be used as pregel/slurry activated with water. Example: Mineral Spirits BENTONE 1000 Water 87 10 3

Typical Properties
Composition Tetra Alkyl Ammonium BENTONITE Very light cream Finely divided powder Less than 1 micron 1.70 14.2 4.95

Color Form Particle Size (dispersed) Density (gm/cm3) (lbs./U.S. gallon) Apparent Density (uncompacted) (lbs./ft.3)

Full efficiency will be obtained when the pregel is added to the dispersion phase.

Recommended Levels of BENTONE 1000 Additive

Use levels are typically 0.2-2.0% by weight of the system, with the level dependent upon the degree of thickening, control of sag and pigment settling desired. When evaluating BENTONE 1000 additive as a replacement for conventional organoclays now used in the 0.2-2.0% range, a good starting point is equal weight replacement. After determining initial performance, the proper adjustment in loading level can be made. When replacing easy dispersion organoclays which are being used at a level above 1.0% by weight, a lower level of BENTONE 1000 additive is generally required to match rheological properties.
