END OF MODULE SELF-EVALUATION

NAME Oliver Cassell

1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them? For this module, due to how previous modules have mapped out, I decided to focus on my concept development, creating aesthetics that not only look good but are in context and have meaning, Ive found that with previous briefs I have focused more on the aesthetics and forgot to consider the reasons for creating the designs. My more conceptual approach allowed me to create a larger identity for the clients I have been working with, apposed to just designing a nice logo, this meant creating more of an environment for the business and something for their customers to remember them by. One of my favourite projects from this module is the Loco brief, this allowed me to explore a much wider range for visuals and brand identity, taking a more abstract approach to design as apposed to my usual minimal approach. Completing this brief has really made me want to get stuck into another more experimental brief to see how far I can push myself in that area, also to have a wider range of design for my portfolio.

2. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process? In terms of methods and processes I havent pushed my self enough this module. This is mainly down to bad time management. I began the year wanting to explore a range of different print finishes, one being die cuts used throughout my Hubble publication to represent the instruments used on board the telescope. I found my self getting so involved with the conceptual development of the layout and stock choices that I forgot about extra details which could have furthered the aesthetics of that brief. My Gent No. 5 brief also lacked print finishes, I would have liked to add a spot varnish to the logo throughout my range to give the project a more up market aesthetic but again I got so involved with the design element I overlooked extra aesthetics.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these? One of my main strengths through this module was design development; I feel I tried a lot more variations throughout this module in all briefs, to find the best possible design solution for each. This is something I have lacked in the past. I usually get one idea and run with it. The brief that reflects this the most is Gent No. 5, I fully explore three completely different possible outcomes before settling and continuing to develop an idea. Throughout my FMP I will continue to keep up a high standard of design development by always keeping a notebook on my self to jot down any ideas that come to mind allowing me to find the best solution for each brief.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future? My main weakness would have to be time management. Unfortunately I have let myself down again, although I have been better than previous modules, Ive still found myself running out of time and wanting to do much more to briefs at the last minute. I will make sure this doesnt happen again by revisiting a timeline on a week-by-week basis to ensure everything runs accordingly.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

1 - Keep a week-by-week timeline on my person at all times. 2 - Keep a notepad for ideas on my person at all times. 3 - Consider print finishes from the very beginning of projects 4 - Create my own crits with peers. 5 Source all materials needed for projects immediately.

6.How would you grade yourself on the following areas: (please indicate using an x) 5= excellent, 4 = very good, 3 = good, 2 = average, 1 = poor 1 2 Attendance Punctuality Motivation Commitment / Quantity of work produced / Quality of work produced / Contribution to the group The evaluation of your work is an important part of the assessment criteria and represents a percentage of the overall grade. It is essential that you give yourself enough time to complete your written evaluation fully and with appropriate depth and level of self-reflection. If you have any questions 3 / / / / 4 5

relating to the self evaluation process speak to a member of staff as soon as possible.
