TOPIC 16: Electromagnetic Induction Tutorial

Self-Attempt Questions 1 A square coil of wire with side 5.00 cm contains 100 loops and is positioned perpendicular to a uniform magnetic field of 0.600 T. It is quickly pulled from the field at constant speed (moving perpendicular to the magnetic field) to a region of zero magnetic flux density. At t = 0, the right edge of the coil is at the edge of the magnetic field. It takes 0.100 s for the whole coil to reach the field-free region. The coils total resistance is 100 . Find the change in magnetic flux through the coil (-0.15 Wb) the current induced (15 mA) the e.m.f. induced (1.5 V) the energy dissipated in the coil (0.00225 J) Fext required to pull the coil (0.045 N) The graph shows the magnetic flux through a coil as a function of time. What is the induced e.m.f. in the coil at (a) t = 0.05 s, (b) t = 0.15 s, (c) t = 0.5 s? (-0.1 kV, 0, 0.04 kV)

The area of a coil of 100 turns oriented with its plane perpendicular to a magnetic field of density 0.20 T is 0.050 m2. Find the e.m.f. induced in this coil if the magnetic field reverses its direction in 0.30 s. (6.7 V) Determine the direction of the induced current in R in each of the following cases

current decreases rapidly to zero

(a) (b) (c) (d)

first, the switch is closed then the variable resistor in series with the cell is decreased then the circuit containing resistor R is moved to the left then the switch is opened.

If the current is the wire is increased, indicate the direction of the induced current in each loop A, B and C. . Discussion Questions 6 A cube of length l = 2.5 cm is placed in a uniform magnetic field with components Bx = +5.0 T, By = +4.0 T and Bz = +3.0 T (a) Calculate the magnetic flux through the shaded face of the cube. (0.0031 Wb) (b) What is the total magnetic flux emerging from the volume enclosed by the cube (that is, through all six faces?) (0 Wb)

7 The pickup on an electric guitar produces an electrical signal from the vibration of the guitar strings. The pickup consist of a small coil of insulated wire wound round a small cylindrical bar magnet. The strings of the guitar are made of steel, and when a string vibrates, an electrical signal is generated between the terminals of the coil. a) (i) State Faradays law of electromagnetic induction (ii) Use faradays law to explain why an electrical signal is generated b) Suggest why (i) the electrical signal must be amplified before connection to a loud speaker (ii) the design of the pickup would be inappropriate for use on a guitar with nylon strings 8 a) A loop of wire is allowed to fall between the poles of a magnet. Determine the direction of the induced current in the loop when it is (i) above the magnet, (ii) below the magnet. b) Rather than let the loop fall downwards, suppose we attach a string to it and raise it upwards with constant speed along the path indicated by the dotted line. How does the tension in the string compare with the weight of the loop when the loop is (i) above the magnet, (ii) below the magnet. 9 The diagram shows a vertical iron rod with a wire coil of many turns wrapped around its base. A metal ring slides over the rod and rests on the wire coil. Initially, the switch connecting the coil to a battery is open but when it is closed, the ring flies into the air. Explain.

10 The diagram shows two metal discs of the same size and material oscillating in and out of a region of magnetic field. One disc is solid while the other has a series of slots. (a) Explain why the retarding effect is greater on the solid disc. (b) As the solid disc swings to the right from the region with no field into the region of magnetic field, deduce the direction of the induced current in the disc. Challenging Questions 11 A solid metal cylinder of mass m rolls down parallel metal rails spaced a distance L apart with a constant acceleration ao (figure on left below). The rails are inclined at an angle to the horizontal. The rails are then connected electrically at the top (via a wire) and immersed in a magnetic field of strength B that is perpendicular to the plane of the rails (figure on right below). If R is the total resistance of the circuit consisting of the cylinder, rails and wire, obtain an expression for the terminal velocity v of the cylinder as it slides down the plane.

A search coil is a device that can be used to measure the magnetic field strength. A coil of N turns and area A is initially perpendicular to a magnetic field of magnitude B. The coil is connected to a special type of galvanometer (called ballistic galvanometer) that measures the total charge Q that flows through it. To measure the magnetic field, the coil is suddenly withdrawn from the field. If R is the total resistance of the circuit, obtain an expression for the total charge Q flowing in the coil.
