Several influential architects of the past have left their mark on the South Bay in the way of numerous residences and commercial buildings. Richard Neutra and Lloyd Wright, respectively, have contributed to the diverse architectural geography in the South Bay, and steps have been taken to preserve some of their work.

Several influential architects of the past have left their mark on the South Bay in the way of numerous residences and commercial buildings. Richard Neutra and Lloyd Wright, respectively, have contributed to the diverse architectural geography in the South Bay, and steps have been taken to preserve some of their work.

    Lloyd Wright
    Lloyd Wright settled in Southern California in 1913 with his brother. He started out as a landscape architect and eventually designed and built a number of houses in the Hollywood and Los Feliz districts of Los Angeles in the mid- to late 1920s. He designed the second and third band shells at the Hollywood Bowl. THE RIVIERA METHODIST CHURCH

    Richard Neutra
    Richard Neutra spent most of his life and career in Southern California, and is considered to be among the most important modernist architects. Neutra is famous for focusing on the true needs and wishes of his clients as opposed to simply putting his own artistic stamp on a project. He is known for creating a modern regionalism for Southern California.

    The Riviera Methodist Church. Built in 1958, this mid-century, modern church was designed by Richard Neutra and his son, Dion, and Robert Alexander. NEUTRAS BECKSTRAND HOUSE Neutras Beckstrand House is one of his earlier designs and overlooks Malaga Cove. Built in 1940, the home reportedly used all prefabricated wall frames with built-in windows. Built on what used to be an orange grove, the residence is now surrounded with shrubbery which adds to the homes mystique.

    THE DAILEY HOUSE The Dailey House was designed by Neutra and built in 1976. It was renovated in 2011 with the help of local architect, John Blanton. THE BIRD OF PARADISE HOUSE The Bird of Paradise House was built in 1963 and designed by Lloyd Wright. The furniture was reportedly also designed by Wright to complement the homes exterior, and was recently auctioned off. This home is also known as the Bowler House and is among Wrights final projects. The Moore House, also designed by Lloyd Wright, was completed in 1959. It was a sleek, ultramodern design, and a familiar sight driving along Paseo Del Mar. The home was first threatened with demolition in 2010. It was ultimately demolished in April, 2012 so the owners could construct a new home.
