Project: Abstracting form, hand-building with coils Goal: To learn basic hand-forming techniques of coil building.

To learn the techniques of applying and decorating with slip and glaze. To abstract a form utilizing an objects contour line. Key Terms Contour Line: means "outline", and presents exterior edges of objects. A plain contour has a clean, connected line, no shading and emphasizes - an open "shell" of the subject. More complex contours can imply shading values through interior outlines may have line textures. Realism/Naturalism : The realistic and natural representation of people, places, and/or things in a work of art. Abstraction: the opposite of naturalism, or the antithesis of forms that replicate or imitate reality. Abstraction moves away from a depiction of realism by taking the essence of realism and applying an idea that focuses the artists selective vision. In other words an artist is looking at an object that exists and manipulating its properties to create a work of their own creation. Non-objective: Artworks having no recognizable subject matter (not recognizable as such things as houses, trees, people, etc.) Also known as non-representational art. The artist is not looking at an object that exists. Organic Form: Shapes that are not regular or even, using a combination of edges that are curved or angular. Organic forms are irregular in outline, and often asymmetrical. Organic forms are most often thought of as naturally occurring. Geometric Form: Geometric forms are those which correspond to named regular shapes, such as squares, rectangles, circles, cubes, spheres, cones, and other regular forms. Architecture, is usually composed of geometric forms. These forms are most often thought of as constructed or made. Volume: Refers to the space within a form. The space inside. Mass: Refers to the effect and degree of bulk, density, and visual weight of matter in space; the area an object takes up in space. Procedure: 1. Choose an object with at least one dynamic contour. A symmetrical or Asymmetrical object will do. Choose the side you wish to use. The contour must go in and out. can not be a straight contour. No geometric forms. 2. Dissect object and draw the chosen contour of the form using these size requirements: 12 in largest dimension if shortest dimension is less than 4 (if form is skinny) 9 if your form is as tall as it is wide. *This will be your template (negative) and must be a replica of your chosen form. Template details in class. 3. Coil build 1 vessel utilizing your template. Walls are to be inch thick, try for perfect symmetry. 4. Decorate your sculpture with your own decoration and attachments. The surface area should be inspired by the original objects surface design/texture. In other words you are using the objects details to bring back the essence of the object. You must have attachments. Construction: These forms are to be well-crafted, smoothed and finished objects. Try to make the walls even in thickness. You should not see seams, additions or construction technique in the finished forms. Please keep your piece leather-hard by covering them with a plastic bag. Glaze and Decoration Criteria: 1. Choose at least 2 of the following techniques: Texture, stamp, carve, Sgraffito, Mashima/Inlay, slip 2. You will apply glaze by dipping, pouring or brushing Grading: 100 points Your project will be evaluated for skill, creativity and craftsmanship in: NAME: Project 3: Handbuilding 1.
