Volunteer tasks- Scrub control and other habitat works, Red River LNR
Vulnerable Staff Are there any staff who may be particularly vulnerable and at risk eg young persons (under 18); new and expectant mothers, staff with disabilities or health conditions that might increase risk? Other Vulnerable Persons Are there service users or visitors who may be particularly vulnerable and at risk eg children or adults with physical or learning disabilities? List these: Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by parents or adults who will agree to take full responsibility for them while on site.

Task leader to provide detailed instruction regarding the site, and safe working procedures. Provide close supervision of volunteer groups to ensure safe working practices are followed. Ensure those under 18 are accompanied by responsible adults. Ensure volunteers only carry out tasks which they are physically capable of and for which they have suitable clothing and protective equipment. Someone first aid trained on site at all times, mobile phone & first aid kit carried. Local knowledge used to avoid busy periods and areas. If the area is not closed to the public during task ensure that a safe route is maintained for any passing public. Consider stopping work when people are passing. Use appropriate signage to inform public.

Correct handling techniques and safe working practice on manual handling and use of hand tools communicated to volunteers by task leader. Use PPE where appropriate (eg work gloves). If severe weather forecast postpone task. Be aware of changes in weather (eg high wind, heavy rain) & stop task if necessary. If hot weather is forecast advise sunscreen, suitable clothing & provide drinking water on site. Task leader to advise participants of hazards & remove any major trip hazards at start of task if possible. Task leader to organise work to ensure site is maintained in a tidy condition as work progresses. Water/cleaning facilities available & first aid kit carried. Warn participants of potentially hazardous plants. Ensure participants are aware of emergency access routes. Task leader to ensure location details and directions are available on site and ready to pass to emergency services. Task leader to ensure fire site is clearly identified and clear of surrounding obstacles. Ensure fire doesnt get too large, keep clear of surrounding vegetation or other flammable materials, and ensure at the end of the session it has died down sufficiently to avoid spreading to surrounding area. Ensure participants are aware of location of river and that no work is carried out within 2 metres of river banks.

The river water is contaminated, as are large areas of ground surrounding the wetland. Ensure that participants wash their hands with fresh water, alcohol wash, or wet wipes before eating or drinking. The wetland was formerly the site of a tin streaming operation and potentially contains the industrial debris associated with that activity. Ensure participants have suitable footwear to minimise the risk of feet being impaled
