Coca Cola history and its importance for people

The logo of Coca-Cola, as the product itself, is assessed amongst the most renowned logo style and brands in the entire world. The first Coca-Cola logo was produced by John Pemberton's (the inventor of Coca-Cola) co-worker and bookkeeper, Frank Mason Robinson, in 1885, believing that the two C letters would look very nice in advertising. It was Robinson who suggested the name and selected the logos unique cursive writing. The bottling industry started in 1899 when the two Chatanooga businessmen, Benjamin F. Thomas and Joseph B. Whitehead, got the private rights to bottle and trade Coca-Cola for many cities of the United States from The Coca-Cola Company (Khan, n.d.: 8). Coca-Cola, at the present time, is one of the principals in sponsoring the most important, exciting occasions all over the world, such as football matches, concerts, parties, and many other social, economical, sport etc. events. According to Coca-Cola website the mission of it is to refresh the world in body, mind, and spirit. This seems to be true because Coca-Cola was the all American national beverage for many years. It became a part of their culture and by the time it was delivered to most parts of the world, it found its place among their cultures as well. Figure 1 shows Coca Colas logos since 1886 up to present day.

The fierce reaction (angry calls) that the company received from American people when it tried to change the name of their product from Coca-Cola to Coke reflect the real feeling of attachment of people of United States to this important product. The US people thought that a part of their culture was under attack. Their psychology never accepted to have a substitution of Coca-Cola or another formation rather than that. They put Coca-Cola name in their songs, related it to their important occasions. Currently, it is very hard to see a restaurant in the UK or the USA that has no Coca-Cola drink among their beverages that are offered with meals, and this is the case with most of the countries around the world. The effect that Coca-Cola left on people is huge; however it is not the only thing that is very influential for the culture of many nations. Apple Company for electronics is as influential as Coca-Cola since it launched the best products it has. The following section will be show the effect that Apple products have on people at the present time. II. The Cultural significance of Apples logo

The logo of a company is usually either a brief sentence or an abbreviation of the first letters of each word in the name of something pronounced as a word. It describes the brand of a company and the nature of its work. The logo is generally a very important element in the advertising plan for any company because it makes it easier for the consumer to remember the name of the company and it increases the desire to acquire their products. The logo usually expresses the companys brand and gives it a distinct identity. Any company that has no distinct logo might create some questions in the mind of the consumer about the work of the company and consequently make the company somehow lose its identity in the eye of some people. Besides, it should be linked to the name of the company or at least be relevant to its work. Likewise, the colour of logo plays an important role to catch the eyes of the consumer. Therefore, it should be
3

eye-catching, somehow attractive, and distinguished from the logos of other rival companies that might have close or similar logos. Sometimes, some companies have slogans accompanied by their marketing logos to give effective advertising function to their products. This makes the strategies of the production and marketing companies more successful. For example, McDonalds logo is M, and it is accompanied by the slogan Im loving it. It is short, expressive, and very easy for memorization at the same time. So, wherever you are in, you will know that this logo belongs to McDonald. With regard to Apple Company, which is considered to be one of the largest electronic companies in the world, it has its specific logo which is the image of the apple itself. It gained its success from the simple and beautiful designs of its product and the logo it has is a clear example of that. It was not always like that because in the beginning, the company used to have a dark and an unclear picture of Newton (the owner of the universal gravitation theory) sitting under the apple tree. Later on, after gaining a noticeable success, the company changed and simplified the logo to a colourful bitten apple image alone which has been used as a symbol of the company until 1998. It is said that the reason behind choosing the image of apple to be the logo of the company goes to the esteem and respect the company has for the science of the scientist Isaac Newton. The colours in the image represented the colourful screens of devices that were considered to be a strong point of the company. In 1998, the company chose the silver to be the only colour for the apple used as companys logo. Figure 1 shows the historical development of Apple logo from 1976 up to present day.

Figure 1 Apple Companys logo from 1976 till today It cannot be denied that Apple devices have become a part that cannot be separated from the life of most people all over the world. The effect they have on people currently is great. Apple devices have perhaps brought the greatest change in the way people wirelessly listen to music, view visual images, exchange data and communicate (Ratan Tata). Apple's products have had a profound impact on mankind, unequalled by any other company in the information and technology space (Ibid). Apparently, Steve Jobs, the co-founder and chairman of Apple Inc, has a great impact on our culture. He introduced real milestone products that changed the life of people who witnessed technology over the last 40 years. According to a survey conducted by brandchannel.com (which is an online magazine), Apple brand has the main effect on the worlds customers, while other important brands like Microsoft and the United States nation companies are measured to be in need of a remake (http://www.ElegantDirectory.com).Apple devices, in particular, the ones produced after 2000 changed the way humans interrelate and operate machine everlastingly. For example, with the production of iPhone people no more needed the hard keyboard of numbers and letters; instead they controlled their devices by touch. In addition to the change of the use of the device, iPhone changed the appearance of people themselves. An idea that supports this is the fact that a large number of people, in particular the youth class, walk around wearing headsets and accessories while using their mobile phones for calling or listening
5

to music. Most of them believe that the headsets and other accessories add something attractive to their clothes and appearance. Additionally, instead of staying in one place in order to contact someone via some social networking websites such as Skype, Facebook etc. through personal computer or even laptop, Apple has added an interesting item to the culture of humans which is the use of video camera while walking around in streets. Having an effortless access to information and data on the phone is another positive impact Apple has on people as well. However, the effects Apple products have on people are not just positive ones; there are some negative ones as well. No one can deny that the great number of iPhones used in the hands of people from all classes of society generates the lack of connecting and interaction with each other face to face i.e. the act of conversation and going over each other from time to time. An easy access to information might make users lose the spirit of searching for information existing in books as well, which is another negative impact on academics. III. Conclusion

To sum up, Apple Company products presented via the image of apple have great links with peoples lives in many countries. These links can be reflected through the culture and the habits of people of certain nations especially by the young. Apple has very clearly left some important traces on people as has Coca Cola since its production. Things like wandering around with holding an iPhone in hand and listening to music are as significant and notable as Coca Cola beverages used to be and are still until now. Most of people, in particular, western countries citizens might not be able to resist the idea of having a cell phone that is not from the Apple brand.
