THEE WORD FOR THE WEEK

The God of Second Chances Hosea 1:1-3:5 December 31, 2012 January 4, 2013 Monday Read Hosea 1:1-9 The structure in the book of Hosea is a repetitive cycle announcing judgment upon Gods people for their unfaithfulness and subsequently promising salvation through the very judgment God would bring. In these verses God begins announcing judgment on account of Israels unfaithfulness. Why does God command Hosea to take an unfaithful wife [v.2]? What is the significance of the names given to Hoseas children [v.4,6,9]? In what ways have you been unfaithful to the One who has taken you as His own? Tuesday Read Hosea 1:10-2:1 In these three verses we find a reversal of the judgment announced in the preceding paragraphs and we see Gods purpose in the carrying out of judgment. What is the significance of the promise & proclamation made in these verses? What does this reveal about Gods heart? How has God reversed our judgment so that we who once were Not His People are now His People? Take a moment to thank God for the salvation He has provided through the judgment laid upon His Son. Wednesday Read Hosea 2:2-13 In these verses we find a very poetic description of what we might call the redemptive consequences of Israels sin. What does God say would be the consequences of Israels continued unfaithfulness? What does God say would be the result of these consequences for His people? [v.7] How have you experienced the redemptive consequences of your own sin? Take a moment to thank God for not withholding the redemptive consequences of your sin and thereby awakening your heart to return to Him. Thursday Read Hosea 2:14-23 In these verses we see again the reversal of Gods judgment. How does God say He will bring His people back to Himself? [v.14-15] How has God allured and spoken tenderly to you? What does God promise to do for His people that shall remain for all the ages? Take a moment to thank God for the gracious gift of His enduring covenant. Friday Read Hosea 3:1-5; 1 Peter 1:18-19 In this text we see again a picture of the redemptive love of God pictured in the life of His prophet. Gomer has wandered, becoming bound to another, and Hosea reclaims her. How do Hoseas actions reflect the loving character of God? How has God reclaimed His church? Take a moment and thank God for reclaiming your affections by the demonstration of costly love in the person and work of His Son.
