Old rock lampstands were discovered in the churches at Mundankavu, Kallooppaara, Niranam, Kundara, Chengannur and rock wall lamps at Ollur, Kanjur, Kaduthuruthy &c. The old churchlamps in rock were all either square, hexagonal or octogonal in shape which shape in temples later developed into the circular form but which remained in the original form in churches because there the tradition of rock lampstads practically was extinguished by the arrival of the Portuguese missionaries from ca. the 16th C.
