History
Rumors about the iPhone 5 began shortly after the announcement of the iPhone 4S, though detailed leaks did not emerge until June 2012.[7] On July 30, 2012, reports pinpointed the dates that the iPhone 5 would be unveiled and released on, along with some accurate predictions of its features. [8] On September 4, 2012, Apple announced they would be hosting an event at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco on September 12, 2012. A shadow of the number 5 was featured in the invitations sent to the media, suggesting that the next iPhone would be unveiled at the event. [9] At the unveiling, Apple announced the iPhone 5 and also introduced new iPod Nano and iPod Touch models. They also stated that pre-orders would be accepted starting September 14, 2012.[10] Over two million pre-orders were received within 24 hours.[11] Initial demand for the new phone exceeded the record set by its predecessor, the iPhone 4S, by selling over 5 million units in the first three days.[12] On November 30, 2012, Apple added an unlocked version of the iPhone 5 to their online US store, with the 16 GB model starting at US$649.[13][14]

Critical Reception
Comparison between the 30 pin port of the iPhone 4S and lightning port of the iPhone 5. The iPhone 5 received mainly positive reviews from commentators and reviewers. Tim Stevens from Engadget praised the iPhone 5 for its high resolution screen surpassing that of the iPhone 4S, which he considered to be one of the best phone screens available on the market. Stevens was critical of the new connector, which is incompatible with devices and cables that use the superseded 30 pin connector, although the LA Times reported that this was a change necessary to make the device smaller than its predecessor.[60] Engadget agreed that Apple fulfilled most of the promises stated on its website, such as "better battery performance", "two times the graphics performance" and "two times faster."[77] David Pogue of The New York Times considered the 4-inch Retina display a "nice but not lifechanging change", and praised the Lightning connector for its size, sturdiness, and reversibility, while noting its lack of support for older accessories, remarking that "Apple has a long history of killing off technologies, inconveniently and expensively, that the public had come to love".[78] Technology columnist Ed Baig of USA Today was impressed that Apple had met the public's "lofty expectations" for the iPhone 5 in a competitive market.[79] In a repair-ability review, iFixit found the iPhone 5 easier to disassemble and repair than its predecessor.[6][80] Reviewers and commentators were critical of the new Maps app that replaced Google Maps in iOS 6. It had been reported to contain errors such as misplacement of landmark tags, directing users to incorrect locations and poor satellite images.[81][82][83] Nine days after Maps' release, Apple issued a statement apologizing for the frustration it had caused customers and recommending that they try alternate mapping services.[84] Gizmodo editor Diaz discussed the correspondence between Apple and a reader about purple flare in pictures taken on iPhone 5 camera. Apple's response to the issue was that it is normal and advised the customer to aim the camera away from bright light sources when taking photos.[85]. The white model has been reported to leak light behind the screen, though the issue is not unique to the iPhone 5, as it also affects other Apple devices.[94]

Headphones
Its not easy to create earbud-style headphones that not only feel good in your ears, but also sit securely in your ears. Thats because everyones ears are different. Using optical scans combined with silicone molding, Apple designers created 3D models of various ear types to find a common shape across many different people. That shape led to the unique look of the new Apple EarPods. Unlike traditional circular earbuds, their design is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other earbud-style headphones. Theyre more stable and durable, too. Apple engineers asked more than 600 people to test over 100 iterations of the Apple EarPods. Testers ran on treadmills in extreme heat and extreme cold. They performed various cardio workouts. They were even asked to shake their heads side to side, up and down. The result: Apple EarPods provide stronger protection from sweat and water, and theyre remarkably stable in the ear. Which means they stay in, even when youre on the go. At the same time Apple designers were trying to define an ideal earbud shape, Apple sound engineers acousticians were focused on improving sound quality. First, they established a target sound for the Apple EarPods. That target: a person sitting in a room listening to high-quality speakers. The biggest determinant of what you hear from any speaker is the movement of its diaphragm. The inward and outward motion is what creates sound. But earbud speaker diaphragms are typically made from a single material, which can limit sound output. So Apple acousticians re-engineered an earbud speaker diaphragm with both rigid and flexible materials to minimize sound loss and maximize sound output. Adding to the superior audio quality are strategically placed acoustic vents. The most notable of these vents is the one located in the stem of each EarPod. It allows air inside the stem, which acts as an acoustic chamber, to flow out. So you hear deeper, richer bass tones.

Design
When we envisioned the new iPhone, we landed on a remarkably thin and light design. But its nearly impossible to make a device so thin and so light without sacrificing features or performance. We could have taken the easy way out and designed something more reasonable and less remarkable. But we didnt. If the technology didnt exist, we invented it. If a component wasnt small enough, we re-imagined it. If convention was standing in the way, we left it behind. The result is iPhone 5: the thinnest, lightest, fastest iPhone ever. iPhone 5 is just 7.6 millimeters thin. To make that happen, Apple engineers had to think small, component by component. They created a nano-SIM card, which is 44 percent smaller than a microSIM. They also developed a unique cellular solution for iPhone 5. The conventional approach to building LTE into a world phone uses two chips one for voice, one for data. On iPhone 5, both are on a single chip. The intelligent, reversible Lightning connector is 80 percent smaller than the 30-pin connector. The 8MP iSight camera has even more features like panorama and dynamic low-light mode yet its 25 percent smaller. And the new A6 chip is up to 2x faster than the A5 chip but 22 percent smaller. Even with so much inside, iPhone 5 is 20 percent lighter and 18 percent thinner than iPhone 4S.

Appstore
The App Store has the worlds largest collection of mobile apps. But its not just the number thats impressive. Its the kinds of apps youll find. iPhone apps offer a better experience because they take advantage of the technologies built into the device. And all those apps are in one place, so theyre easy to access, easy to search, and easy to download using the same Apple ID account you use on iTunes. More to see. More to love. With the bigger display on iPhone 5, your built-in apps look even more stunning. Apple apps you download from the App Store have been optimized for the new iPhone 5 display. But even if an app hasnt been updated for iPhone 5, automatic letterboxing lets you use it as you always have. And developers can easily update their apps to take advantage of the larger screen. So youll see more, play more, and get more done.
