Format The format of the midterm examination will be as follows (with some examples of questions and answers; some of these examples use vocabulary you may not yet have encountered): 1. Creating terms from definitions (approx. 30 %) Q: a slight paralysis of the foot [dont use pod-] A: pedoparesis 2. Defining single terms (approx. 40%) Q: pedoparesis A: slight paralysis of the foot (or feet) 3. Short answers on material presented in the lectures and tutorials, such as etymologies, historical, or cultural material (approx. 30%) a) questions on etymologies Q: pupillA: Latin term meaning doll. Used for the pupil of the eye as when you look closely into a persons pupil you can see a doll-like image of yourself . [Note: it is insufficient simply to state that pupill- is a Latin term for the pupil of the eye. You are expected to state the source language, the modern usage, and then to relate the original meaning to the modern usage.] b) questions on historical/cultural material, which could include anything covered in the lectures or tutorials of a historical or cultural nature. Short answer, no longer than a paragraph. B. The final examination will be held in April during the examination period. You must bring your student identification card. If you do not produce your student identification card, you will not be able to write the exam. Defining phrases in a specific context (approx. 20%) The phrases will be set in a paragraph from a journal article; it will be similar in length and complexity to the paragraph assignments given in the tutorials. 5. Short answers on material presented in the lectures and tutorials, such as etymologies, historical, or cultural material (approx. 15%) a) questions on etymologies Q: pupillA: Latin term meaning doll.
