Final Major Project

REVISED POSITION STATEMENT AND RATIONALE Errrrm. Type + Print + Branding = Print based design and typography in relation to branding and the retail environment. Does that make sense? It does in my head.

THEMES / SUBJECTS What Themes/Subjects will form the basis of your work for the final major project? This should include Theoretical and non design based content and concerns.
Retail design, interior design, health & beauty, fashion, consumerism, social media, photography. I think looking back at the last module I didnt have much of a focus on themes that interested me but focused more on the outcomes. I think for the FMP I need to have a ideas that are relevant to each other. I think the major theme really is the retail environment which is something Ive looked at in past projects but it hasnt always been the core focus of what Im doing. Beauty / health / fashion / photography / Interior design

DESIGN CONTEXT Identify areas of professional/ creative practices that will inform the contextualization of the work that you produce. This should include specific designers, studios, practitioners and products as well as broader creative disciplines and methods of Production / Distribution.

irvingandco.com dalziel-pow.com gregorybonnerhale.com blacksheep.uk.com checklandkindleysides.com The studios listed above have a real focus on the type of work that I would like to produce, from working with just packaging, to interior design and then Kindleysides and GBH who really focus on the retail environment. Print based design / packaging design / interior and retail design. Web mainly social media, social networks and blogs. I think I find social media and interaction using blogs and social media a lot more interesting that just web design and this is probably something I would look into more.
Typography / packaging design / retail design / publication design The majority of my briefs tend to focus on typography whether its a core part of the brief or not it is something that I would like to focus on more for at least 2 of the briefs during this module. Packaging and retail design are two disciplines that I want to start merging together as a lot of the packaging that Im interested in is usually seen in the context of the retail environment.

DESIGN DISCIPLINES What areas of graphic design practice do you intend to investigate in relation to the practical and conceptual production / distribution of work in response to selected briefs

DESIGN SKILLS What practical design skills do you intend to further develop and

Print / surface pattern design

apply during your final major project. What do you intend to use the skills for. Consider extending the use of skills that you already have in order to deliver work of a professional standard as well as identifying new skills that you will need to develop. PROPOSED BRIEFS List any briefs that you have already identified as possible starting points for your Final Major Project. You should include possible competition and Live briefs as well as identifying briefs that will allow you to develop a significant body of research and development in relation to your stated Themes/subjects, Design disciplines and production / distribution methods

Want to further develop my knowledge about print, because well print is amazing. I know my work has taken a bit of a surface pattern direction and instead of focusing too much just on making pretty patterns I want to work with this in the broader context of branding and retail design. I think I need a better understanding of the relationship between surface pattern design in a broader graphic design context.

1. Branding for Printed textiles student Elizabeth smith. Live brief focuses on branding and working with someone who has a core understanding of Printed textiles, could also work with further collaborations too. Main focus is to work on the branding but I know this could also be extended depending on the deliverables that Elizabeth needs. I think it is also a good brief to give me a better understanding of printed textiles and I think Elizabeth will be a good contact to have. 2. Branding for photography student Natisha Greenaway. Only recently been in touch with Natisha about working on her branding, she seems quite keen on the idea so will have to see how this develops. I really thought my branding for Ella was a successful project in the last module and I think working with photographers really helps to build a network of contacts. I terms of deliverables I still dont know exactly what I need to produce, so this needs to be discussed before I get started. 3. Vintage Luxe branding / print. Starting off with a new logo and business cards. I was contacted by Vinatge Luxe which is a online vintage boutique who also sell their products at Craft fairs and events too. They seem to know exactly what they want and the direction they would like to go in. Potential to develop a good body of work, starting with the branding and business cards which are urgent but then also looking at flyers / promo / web / labels and tags. 4. Douwe Egberts Coffee YCN Collaboration with Sarah Pritchard Sarah is a great lover of coffee and with all the YCN briefs this one really stood out for me and me and Sarah tend to have similar ideas and a similar direction in out style of work so we thought it would be an interested project to work on together. We havent really set the deliverables for the brief and I think this is a brief I would like to work on at a later date and try and focus on most of the live briefs at the moment. 5. Tigerprint Colour extended brief Last module I extended the tigerprint black and white brief to suit my design practice and I tend to find that their briefs have a really good starting point but never give you much direction in how you could develop the brief. The current competition is based quite loosely on colour and I think it could be interesting to expand the black and white brief I worked on in the last module could still be based on homeware but maybe not so much dinnerware. Could have a different direction. Again its a brief that I really need to do some research for so I know what kind of outcomes I want to work on. 6. The story of 1984 research based / type (dissertation..) This brief is probably the one that doesnt really fit with my overall design practice but the subject is something that has always been something that Ive wanted to raise awareness about which is why I decided it would be a suitable focus for my dissertation. I want this brief to be really heavily type based and a publication based on the events of 1984. Could be extended to look at raising awareness and creating an awareness campaign or just rebranding a current campaign..

7. Lartisan Perfumer D&AD (expand this one?) Out of all the D&AD brief this one is probably the one that stood out, although I dont think the brief really excites me that much I think it could be developed a lot further, whether its based on a different perfume or then a range of cosmetics. I do want to enter the brief so going to have to find a balance but if I find it too restricting Ill have to change and develop it. 8. Process Beauty online beauty blog Taking on board that Ive always had an interest in beauty and nail art and so on, I decided to set up a online beauty blog, which is going quite well. I dont think this will be a substantial brief in anyway but its something I want to develop throughout the module as something that can continue after the module is over. The primary aim is to have a blog that is well considered, selective and is something the selected audience are interested in reading and interacting with. In the future Im hoping it will develop into something where I am able to review products on a regular basis and have competitions and giveaways so the audience have something to interact with. 9. Cosmetics / makeup packaging / Retail environment I think this brief will probably end up being about either rebranding a make up brand or then looking at a collection of makeup that I could repackage and then look at designing the promo and store display for it? I need to be sure about the brand and the outcomes so this really needs some research. 10. Geek table collective 11. Fashion End of year show / Hopefully a yearbook. KEY TEXTS. List a selected number of books, articles and texts that are central o your proposed area of practice. These should include a combination of design and nondesign based books, theoretical texts as well as visual publications. Baseline Magazine Typo Magazine Perkins M.
