neighbourhood approaches to Loneliness

www.jrf.org.uk/neighbourhood-loneliness About Joseph Rowntree Foundation and Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust The Joseph Rowntree Foundation and Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust are two independent organisations that work together to understand the root causes of social problems, to identify ways of overcoming them, and to show how social needs can be met in practice.

the issue
11% of us are often feeling lonely One in three of us would be embarrassed to admit that we were lonely Jo Griffin The Lonely Society, Mental Health Foundation Loneliness is something that we all experience at points in our lives; it can affect anyone of any age. Whilst loneliness is a normal emotion that reminds us to seek the company of other people, it can become a powerfully destructive cycle of negative thoughts and behaviours which can feel overwhelming. We believe that community activities in your neighbourhood can contribute to the well-being of people who are experiencing, or are at risk of experiencing, loneliness; that local people can play a central role in their neighbourhood; and that this involvement would enhance their neighbourhoods well-being too.

the aims
Increase the well-being and support for people who are experiencing problematic loneliness; Ensure local people are at the heart of the programme; Raise awareness of the causes and impacts of loneliness; Increase the sense of neighbourliness by facilitating community activity; Capture and share lessons in ways that are meaningful, enduring and replicable.

the plan

The Joseph Rowntree Foundation and the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust are launching a three year action research programme to explore the issues of loneliness. We will be working with four neighbourhoods, two in Bradford (Bradford Moor and Denholme) and two in York (Carr Estate in Acomb and New Earswick). The programme will be independently evaluated so lessons can be learnt locally and beyond the four neighbourhoods involved. We will be training local people to identify the issues surrounding loneliness in their neighbourhoods and look at potential activity to address this. We will continue to work with people who live and work in these neighbourhoods to explore what neighbourhoods can do to impact the issue of loneliness.
