HOMEWORK #1

1. Harmonic current spectrum of a rectifier connected to a 3-phase 36 kV 50 Hz
feeder is given below. The load is a star-connected inductive load with P
L
= 720
kW, Q
L
= 240 kVAR. A star-connected capacitance of 0.25 F is used for power
factor correction at the same bus. The 36 kV busbars are fed from an 170 kV/36 kV
, 1200 kVA transformer having an equivalent impedance of Z
t
= 0.04 + j 0.30 pu.
The short circuit impedance of 170 kV system is 0.002 + j 0.006 pu.
Sketch the diagram of the system and determine the harmonic current and voltage
levels up to 47
rd
order harmonic. Determine the THD for the bus voltages and
branch currents

HOMEWORK #2

Design a passive filter for the system defined in Q1 of Homework I. Determine the new
harmonic current and voltage levels up to 47
rd
order harmonic. Determine the new THD for
the bus voltages and branch currents.
Note : Assume that the resistances are constant.
Since the fifth and the seventh harmonics are the dominant ones (see the solution of Hw#1) 2
shunt filters tuned to the 5
th
and the 7
th
harmonics and a damped filter (optional) having a
corner frequency of 11
th
harmonic will be a good choice. Let the power factor correction
capacitor of 0.25 F be shared by the filters as 0.10 F, 0.10 F and 0.05 F, respectively.
Filter details are calculated and illustrated below.

HOMEWORK #4

Consider the system of Homework #3. Design a filter to alleviate the effects of the
harmonics. Compute harmonic bus voltages and branch currents together with
associated total harmonic distortions.

One can easily conclude from the frequency spectrum of the bus voltages, branch
currents or the system impedance that the most critical frequency is the 5
th
harmonic.
Therefore tuned filter for 5
th
harmonic is required. Additional damped filter for 7
th
and
higher harmonics will improve the performance.

POWER SYSTEM HARMONICS FINAL TEST

1. Consider the following industrial power system supplied through two transformers, and
feeds several converter drives, high voltage motors, several low voltage distribution boards
(passive loads) and filters.
a) Calculate the value of the capacitance that should be installed at 36 kV busbar to
improve the pf (at fundamental frequency) to 0.95. (10)
b) Design a passive harmonic filter comprising two single tuned filters tuned to 11
th
and
13
th
harmonics and two damped filters whose corner frequencies are 4f
o
and 24f
o
. Plot
the filter impedance versus frequency. (10)
c) Calculate fundamental frequency impedances of the system components. (10)
d) Calculate the fundamental frequency branch currents and input voltage, assuming that
the distribution voltage is 36 kV. (10)
e) Calculate the harmonic branch currents and harmonic bus voltages together with
corresponding harmonic distortions. (10)
f) Determine the frequency dependent impedance looking from the harmonic source and
plot the impedance magnitude versus frequency. Interpret the results. (10)
