Diggers stolen from BMX building site
TWO diggers were set on fire at a building site on the Parklands estate last month. The site
is currently being developed as a BMX track.
Local Beat Manager for the area, PC Rhiannon Topley said: I am disgusted and appalled
by the behaviour of the people responsible for this crime. The site has been built and paid
for by the community. Mindless individuals have entered a secure area by cutting through
fencing; they have then approached two plant hire vehicles, which are valued at around
65,000, and set fire to them.
Carl gets his moment of fame
CaRL Loughlin-Ravenscroft, from Little Sutton, will be appearing on Britains Got Talent, as
his alter ego Grandpa Joe, who brings fairytales to life. In the meantime, Grandpa Joe will
be performing a new show at Ellesmere Port Library on Wednesday 20th February and can
be seen on BGT in March.
Gift for road crash survivor
a yOunG girl from Ellesmere Port who was
involved in a road traffic collision in the week
before Christmas has been presented with a gift by
representatives of the emergency services.
Seven-year-old neve Lockett was injured after
being in collision with a car on Wolverham Road.

Policing unit was determined to ensure neves
experience with the emergency services was a
positive one and approached The Entertainer shop
on Cheshire Oaks who kindly agreed to donate a toy for the youngster.
Last month PC neil Caitens and members of the ambulance service met with neve to
present her with the gift.
Inspector Brian Green of Ellesmere Port neighbourhood Policing unit said: neve was
very lucky not to have been seriously injured as a result of the collision and we hope she
has taken away a positive impression of the emergency services.
Accident on Welsh Road
THERE was yet another serious crash on the a550 Welsh Road at Ledsham last month. The
male driver of a Renault Clio was seriously injured and taken to aintree Hospital. The two
other occupants of a Ford Mondeo were taken to the Countess of Chester Hospital with
back injuries.
Ofsted praise for Rossmore Primary
ROSSMORE Primary School has been a good report by education inspectors. Ofsted praised
the standards and quality of teaching as the school on Red Lion Lane improved from
satisfactory to good.

New homes in Little Sutton
PLanS have been approved for 14 new homes at the former childrens home at The Quillets,
on armthorpe Drive. The building will be converted to include six flats, plus houses, car
parking and communal garden on other parts of the land.
Roadworks in February
BE prepared for roadworks in February when the council carries out resurfacing works in
Parklands, Hawthorn Road and Maple avenue. Diversions will come into force from Monday
18th February and the work is expected to last five days.

Inspirational student
David driven to succeed
a Man from Little Sutton has won a
car after being voted the nations most
deserving student.
David Moorhead spends over 300 a
month travelling from Little Sutton to his
student accommodation in the university
of Bedfordshire. David drives hundreds
of miles a week to see his seven-year-old
daughter Grace who has been in and out
of hospital for some time.
David is now the proud owner of a
Renault Twingo and has earned a 1,000
donation to go towards the university
of Bedfordshire where he is currently
studying for his PHD.
David has come through from 200 other
student nominees and a public vote to
take the title. His story was submitted
by his partner Samantha, who described
David as educations biggest champion.
Battling dyslexia and dyspraxia, David
has gone on to become an ambassador
for his university and is now sharing his
knowledge and experience by lecturing
to fellow students alongside his studies,
whilst also caring for his daughter who
is unwell.
It was Davids determination not to
be beaten which inspired the judges
at Motors.co.uk, who after delivering
the good news, were moved by his
statement: This is a justification, proving
those wrong that mistook my Dyspraxia
for laziness and told me I wouldnt even
get a GCSE I hope there are others with
learning disabilities that can see this and
realise it can be done.
David has been described as
educations biggest champion by
overcoming his learning difficulties and
achieving such great success, and has
gone on to become an ambassador for
Bedfordshire university.

TEn students from Ellesmere Port and neston
have been given awards from the Fred Venables
Higher Education Trust, to help them meet the
costs of higher education.
The trust, funded by Stanlow-based Essar Oil
(uK) Limited, was set up to celebrate the unique
contribution made to the borough by the late Fred
Venables, a councillor for 57 years and council
leader for 39 years, who died in 2006 aged 82.
Councillor Venables was passionate that more
young people should have the chance of studying
for a degree, regardless of their financial situation.
He was a chemist at Stanlow and in recognition
of his achievements; his employers Shell gave a
commitment to finance awards for young people
wishing to study science or other subjects.
Every year the Fred Venables Higher Education
Trust gives grants
to sixth formers heading to university, now funded
by Essar Oil.
at a ceremony at Whitby High School Ed Brady
from Essar Oil presented the students with
awards of 500 each.
Cheshire West and Chester Council succeeded
Ellesmere Port and neston Borough Council as
custodian trustee of the trust and provides officer
support on the charitys administration.
The current trustees of the Fred Venables Trust

Professor David Cracknell former Cheshire
headteacher alan Sieber with administrative
support from neston High School and Cheshire
West and Chester Council.

Art gallery breathes life into high street
a nEW art gallery is set to open on Whitby Road, Ellesmere Port following the launch of a
scheme to bring empty properties on the street back in to use.
Looking to target long-term vacant shops in the old high street of Whitby Road, the grant
scheme aims to bring properties back into use, improve the appearance of the street, help
increase footfall for the other shops, and support the regeneration of the wider area.
Landlords are asked to rent out their unused retail
unit to local community interest groups for a two-year
period, receiving a peppercorn rent and benefiting
from a grant to bring the property back up to modern
specifications in return.
Refurbishments works to 5 Whitby Road are now due
to begin and the art gallery plans to open its doors to
the public in May 2013.
Executive Member for Prosperity, Councillor Herbert
Manley, said: With the current economic climate
Whitby Road has many unused retail outlets and encouraging landlords to claim this grant
will not only improve the appearance of one of the main routes into the town but will bring
properties back into use.
The shop used to be a newsagent until it closed its doors in 2007, after 23 years of trading.

Pond gets a facelift
WHITBy Parks pond has been cleared of pond weed, litter and rubbish as part of its
annual health and maintenance check.
Staf from the Councils Greenspace and Streetscene teams were joined by members of
The Friends of Whitby Park, to put on waders, grab a pitchfork and get stuck in to giving
the area a facelift.
Local Councillor, Brian Jones, who
supported the team on the day, said:
The pond is one of many focal points
within Whitby Park and its important
that we keep it free from litter, not
only from a visual point of view for
visitors but the resident wildlife as
well.
Staf and volunteers did a great
job and managed to clear much
of the marginal pond weed and a
remarkable amount of debris and
litter that had accumulated ensuring
a better environment for all who visit.

This young all white male cat came to us as a stray. Can you offer him his ideal
home? He is very friendly and loves attention. An experienced cat owner is
needed as he sometimes gets overexcited and will give you a little nip but
usually it is only in play. Because of this we would not consider homing him with
a family with young children
Bex is about two years old he is neutered, vaccinated and micro chipped.

Stanley is three years old and very friendly. Unfortunately Stanley has the FIV
virus so must be kept as an indoor cat. He will make a very loyal and loving
companion. He follows his fosterer around everywhere and when she sits down
Stanley thinks it is especially so he can sit on her lap. Stanley is the perfect

winter. if you do
not have any and
can fnd room for
them, go and buy
some from garden
centres as they will
fower year after
year.
There is scope for more
scent in the garden at
this time of year as many
shrubs have scented fowers
to attract the few pollinating
insects that are about. Try Daphne
mezureum, an upright shrub
with pink fowers or Daphne
odora Aureomarginata an
evergreen rounded shrub
with light yellow edges
to the leaves and pinkish
scented starry fowers.
Grow them in a sheltered
spot, avoid heavy clay
soils and place near a path
or door so you can beneft
from scent as you come and
go.
Hamamelis mollis or witch hazel
can be scented too and do best in light
shade with a neutral, moisture retentive, well
drained soil. In winter they have little spidery
fowers. For lovely fragrance try Hamamaelis x
intermedia Pallida with pale yellow fowers.
Another scented gem is Lonicera purpusii
Winter Beauty, one of the honeysuckle family.
Again it likes a lighter,
moisture retentive soil
but is hardy and will fll
a sheltered space with
scent. It is also good for
cutting stems for scent
in the house.
Prune apple and
pear trees by early
February. It is best
to do this before new
growth starts. With
established trees, cut
out any spindly, dead or
diseased shoots but leave
the main leaders (these are
the main shoots that grow
upwards) alone. If the tree gets
too tall, prune about half of
the leaders back to your
required height, then
the rest the following
year.
Finish pruning
roses before March,
cutting back hard to
outward facing buds
on newer growth. Cut
out spindly stems and
dead wood so you have
a framework of strong
stems from which new
growth develops.
Carefully cut or pull out dead stalks
from ornamental grasses. Fine grasses can be
combed with a spring tined rake. Grasses such
as Miscanthus or Stipa require dead stems to be
cut back near ground level but avoiding cutting
new growth.
