Psalm 71:1-6
[1] In you, O LORD, do I take refuge; let me never be put to shame! [2] In your righteousness deliver me and rescue me; incline your ear to me, and save me! [3] Be to me a rock of refuge, to which I may continually come; you have given the command to save me, for you are my rock and my fortress. 4] Rescue me, O my God, from the hand of the wicked, from the grasp of the unjust and cruel man. [5] For you, O Lord, are my hope, my trust, O LORD, from my youth. [6] Upon you I have leaned from before my birth; you are he who took me from my mother's womb. My praise is continually of you.

Facebook Makes Us Miserable

Tim Challies wrote a blog recently that discusses how miserable Facebook makes us. Challies was inspired by a study he read in the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin. Challies summarized its findings: [W]e all believe that others have better lives than we do and this makes us feel bad about ourselves. He claims that Facebook is a catalyst for this destructive thought pattern. He writes, We log on to Facebook, look through the photographs and status messages our friends post, and believe that everyone is happier and more successful than we are. Facebook has become a platform for the great comparison game. We want so badly to appear as if we have it all together all the time. But behind the mask of Facebook, we know the truth. Life is messy. This reality is even more difficult to bear when we see how happy everyone else is. Challies sums up our struggle this way: We do not want to be happywe want to be happier. He further adds, What a ridiculous lot we are. What a sad, jealous, envious lot. Challies closes the article with a plea for Gods people to seek true fellowship within the setting of a church body. Facebook cannot compete with the deep satisfaction of sharing life with real, in-the-flesh people. Challies writes, When I mediate my life by Facebook, I am the one who controls it all. But when I live before others, when I live a real life in the real world, well, that is where people see who I really am. And they love me on that basis. In fact, they love me more on that basis. Lets keep it real, church.
