ATTRIBUTE LILLIE SCHENK, COLLIN RAUSCH

Individuality and expression are not only key attributes of the student population, but also the physical campus, itself. The main buildings on campus each have their own unique and diverse expression in their architecture, their materiality. In celebration of these attributes, identity and wayfinding signage will be unique to each individual building, and will co-exist with the structure in a way that complements the existing aesthetic. Perimeter building will have not only building identifiers next to main entrances, but on the street-facing side of the building in type legible from a street view.

MAIN BUILDING MARKING AND IDENTITY LILLIE SCHENK, COLLIN RAUSCH

On the corners of the main campus, large-scale signage welcomes students and newcomers alike to the campus, as well as designate the boundaries of space. As a reflection of the school as the students and work that it holds, new signage will use the existing curved brick architecture. Mounted to that space will an elongated video board, with block lettering using the existing logo-type mounted to the surface of the video board. Video of student work, shot for abstraction, will continuously loop behind the logo-type as an expression of the schools foundation being the artists and their work.

WELCOME SIGNAGE LILLIE SCHENK, COLLIN RAUSCH

Vanderslice has a unique set of wayfinding problems. The floorplan of the building was built for other purposes than its current role as administration headquarters, leading to difficulties finding offices essential to student life, incoming and existing. New signage stylistically will reflect the existing architectures aesthetic. One considered solution is to provide a cross-section of the building near the main entrance, indicating the location of each office and its location in reference to where the viewer is in that moment.

VANDERSLICE WAYFINDING LILLIE SCHENK, COLLIN RAUSCH

KCAI students are prompted to paint the telephone poles outlining the perimeter of the campus. The students can either work individually or in groups to beautify the poles. This notifies visitors that they are on the extended campus. Students should be the ones to paint the piles because this indicates that we as KCAI students create our own environment.
