Curriculum Standards Addressed: PKCC 4: Identify and name numerals 0-10 2. Cross Curricular Connections: -The students will incorporate writing and the use of writing tools in this lesson when tracing the numbers they recognize. PD-4K-2.3: Show beginning control of drawing and writing tools -They will also incorporate language skills by participating in an interactive read aloud. PKRI 8: Actively engage in group reading activities with purpose and understanding 3. Instructional Objective(s) Criteria: The students will successfully identify numbers 0-10 when participating in a number game.

4. Assessment(s) of the Objectives: Pre-Assessment: Students will be individually assessed on basic number recognition using a Touch Math flipbook. They will be asked to identify each number 0-10. Notes will be recorded on a checklist for each student. Questions to Ask: Did they identify the number without counting objects? Did they have to count objects in order to identify the number? What numbers could they not identify at all? During Assessment: Observation of participation in finger tracing during the interactive read-aloud and number song. The students will participate by tracing the number in the air as the teacher reads it aloud. They will have a guide using the Numbers powerpoint. Questions to Ask: Did they participate in the number song? Did they use their fingers to trace the number in the air? Did they participate in the interactive read-aloud? Did they recognize numbers from the song? Post-Assessment: Students will be individually assessed on basic number recognition during the Fishing for Hearts number game. They will use their fishing pole to catch a number and be asked what number they caught. They will then find that number in their "Fishing for Hearts" number book, trace the number, and count the number of scales on the fish. Notes will be recorded on a checklist for each student. Questions to Ask: Did they identify the number without counting objects? Did they have to count objects in order to identify the number? What numbers could they not identify at all?

Materials/Resources: -Ten Valentine Friends by Janet Schulman -Writing Numbers Song on Youtube -Smartboard and laptop -fishing rod made of wood, fishing line, paper clip, and magnet -Fishing for Hearts Number Book (19 copies) and 1 copy completed for a model -22 heart magnets -2 small plastic containers -Touch Math flipbook -crayons and markers -pre and post assessment checklists -Numbers Powerpoint presentation 6. Prerequisites (Prior Knowledge): Students should be familiar with counting 0-10 and following simple directions. They should know the basics for holding and using writing tools. 7. Procedures: 1. While students are in centers the day before the planned lesson, the teacher will perform the pre-assessment individually using the Touch Math flipbook. The teacher will ask students to identify numbers 0-10 and provide help if needed. 2. Sing and perform finger writing movements to The Writing Numbers song. 3. Introduce Ten Valentine Friends and discuss the front cover and Valentines Day. Guide students in tracing each number in the book with their fingers in the air. Use the Numbers powerpoint on the Smartboard as a reference. 4. Explain the small group activity before dismissing students to centers. 5. Call students by two and individually (depending on results from the pre-assessment) to play the Fishing for Hearts number game. . 6. Give the student his or her fishing pole and ask them to catch a heart with a number on it one at a time. 7. Have the student tell you what number they caught and have them find and trace that number in their Fishing for Hearts number book. Keep the Touch Math flipbook nearby to use as a reference. 8. Keep playing the game until the student has caught all the hearts in the container. 9. Allow students to finish coloring their number book in centers. 8. Accommodations: -For students who have difficulty focusing on the whole group activity, the teacher will have the assistant nearby to help. During the small group activity, the teacher can take them into the hallway or in a different corner of the room to eliminate distractions. -Early finishers will not be an issue for this lesson as it is done in an individual process, but students who have completed the Fishing for Hearts activity can finish coloring their Fishing for Hearts number book. -For students having trouble with number recognition, the teacher will have the Writing Numbers flipbook nearby with instructions on what the numbers look like. The teacher will also have the Fishing for Hearts number book with the quantities of each number available for counting by the child in order to determine the number they caught.
