Methacton Educational Technology Standards

The following are expectations for the end of each grade level: Introduce (I) = Teacher familiarizes students with concept via demonstration and/or hands-on experience Develop (D) = Student gains additional hands-on experience, building on prior knowledge, deepening and expanding understanding of concept or skill Mastery (M) = Student can explain concept and/or demonstrate skill independently Enrich (E) = Student builds upon mastery to extend application of knowledge or skill K Standard 1: Creativity and Innovation Digital Resources/Tools Generate, illustrate, and communicate original works, knowledge, and products using digital tools and media-rich resources Use models and simulations to explore complex systems and issues Publication Produce a media-rich digital story Synthesize and publish information on a collaborative, web-based tool Produce, publish, and maintain a digital portfolio with a variety of products Media Literacy Convey an idea, feeling, or message using images, sound, and/or video Interpret an idea, feeling, or message created using images, sound, and/or video Standard 2: Communication and Collaboration Communication Evaluate and select the appropriate mode of communication for the purpose, task, and audience Demonstrate the proper conventions for the purpose, task, and audience given the mode of communication Collaboration Participate and collaborate as members of a local and global network of learners Standard 3: Research and Information Fluency Information Retrieval Identify and use age-appropriate search engines and directories Use electronic searching strategies such as keyword and Boolean searching Use browser navigational tools to access information Digital Resources Use a variety of technology tools for accessing information and pursuing inquiry Select and evaluate appropriate resources based upon set criteria such as relevance, validity, and authority Use digital tools to collect and organize information Standard 4: Digital Citizenship Safety Protect information to maintain personal privacy Understand how to recognize and respond to inappropriate digital content and interactions Ethical/Legal Use Demonstrate responsible use of technology and understand the consequences of inappropriate use Respect copyright/intellectual property rights of creators and producers when gathering and using information Understand legal policies related to the use of technology Standard 5: Technology Operations and Concepts Hardware Identify and understand the various hardware components of technology systems Properly use the various components of the technology systems (turn on, keyboards, mice, monitors) Demonstrate basic troubleshooting techniques Applications/Software Identify various software productivity tools Select and use appropriate software productivity tools (word processing, presentation tools, etc.) Networks Identify and understand the basic components of a network Understand and be able to delineate the difference between public, private, and home networks Security Identify and understand what malware is and how it can harm you and your computer Learn appropriate techniques for generating and maintaining username and passwords Understand the concepts of identity theft and phishing attempts and learn how to prevent them Understand how third parties can track your online activities Recognize and practice secure web-based activity 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
