ABOUT Hesaraghatta known as the Malnad of Bangalore and also as the land of Beetle Leaf, is a popular tourist spot

t situated around 27 kms from Bangalore. The famous 'Nrityagrama' founded by the renowned classical dancer, the late Protima Gowri Bedi, where young dancers are trained for traditional dance in the guru - shishya mould, is located here. Nrityagram also hosts the world famous music and dance event Vasantha Habba. Hesaraghatta was known from a long time ago for the huge Hesaraghatta Lake spread across a thousand acres. A bund, built in 1532 on the Arkavathy, created the Hesaraghatta tank which served as an irrigation tank for centuries. It was comprehensively redone in 1894 to become the major water supplier to Bangalore. A brick aqueduct brought water to a distance and then steam pumps were used to pump it up to Chimney Hills from where the water flowed by gravity to the Jewel Filters at Malleswaram. Remnants of this aqueduct or channel, as it is known to locals, can still be seen. This quaint, picturesque town is also a hub of Central Institutes known for research and development. Horticulture & Animal Husbandry is another area which this place is famous for livestock breeding and poultry centres have been established here as part of the IndoDanish dairy project. The place also includes a famous film training institute. SIGHTSEEING HIGHLIGHTS The Hesaraghatta lake is home to hundreds of different birds and it is thus often frequented by bird lovers. Those with an interest in art and culture should definitely not miss visiting the world famous 'Nrityagrama' dance school.
