Introduction
Neutral Displacement Relay Model MND11 is an electronic micro
controller based single-phase voltage relay. It is suitable Ior Earth
Fault Protection oI Generators earthed through a neutral earthing
transIormer and where immunity to operation on third harmonic
Irequency is essential, capacitor bank protection etc.
It`s micro controller based design oIIers a wide range oI Iield
selectable Trip-Time Characteristics. It incorporates a separate
instantaneous alarm relay and accepts very wide auxiliary supply
range.
MND11 is designed Ior Ilush mounting. It is very compact in size,
which results in saving oI panel space. Its Drawout construction
makes installation and maintenance very easy.

Range (This is indicated on a label Iixed to one side oI the
relay which also shows external wiring details) Ior which the
unit has been conIigured. Ensure that this speciIication is as
per your order.
Remove the protective cover Irom the terminal block by
removing two screws. Connect suitable auxiliary supply
between terminals 2 and 3. Switch ON the supply, all LEDs
will blink once and then Power On` LED, Norm Inv 5.7s`
LED should glow, this indicates that Trip Time
Characteristics selected is Normal Inverse-5.7 Sec. which is a
deIault Iactory setting (or as per the order).
Now remove the transparent cover Irom the Iront panel.
Press Test` button Ior Iew seconds (1 sec.),Trip` LED will
glow Ior a short while and output relays will also operate.
Trip` LED will go OFF and output relay will release
automatically aIter a Iixed duration oI approximately 1sec,
even iI Test` button is kept pressed. Once Trip` LED goes
OFF, all LEDs will blink once, and then relay will return to
Normal mode i.e. only Power On`, 'Norm Inv 5.7s' LED
will glow. This completes the preliminary check. Disconnect
the auxiliary supply and Iix the protective covers back on
Iront panel and terminal block.
2.2 Mounting and Wiring:

2.3.2 Setting the Fault Voltage Level
Fault Voltage level Vs is expressed as percentage oI PT
rating Vn (Vn110V). MND11 oIIers Voltage setting oI 2
to 32 oI Vn in steps oI 2. i.e. it can be set to
2,4,...,32 oI Vn. This setting is done using Iirst block
oI 4 DIP switches Irom top on the Iront panel (ReIer Fig.
2). Desired Iault level can be set by switching ON one or
more oI these switches, each one having its deIinite weight
a. The Iault level is then the sum oI a Iixed base plus the
addition oI all the terms a, corresponding to the switches
in ON position, multiplied by PT rating Vn. This is
8
indicated by the Iollowing Iormula on the Iront panel,
Vs 0.02 ( 1 + a ) Vn
Where,
Vs Set Voltage Level (Fault Voltage Level) in Volts.
Vn Rated PT Voltage (110 Volts).
a Weight oI switch in ON position .
(ReIer Table 2 Ior switch position details)
II required Fault Level
setting is 12 oI Vn.
(i.e. Vs Vn x 0.12).
Then to achieve this, put
switch no. 4 and 2 with a
1 and 4 respectively in
ON position. This will
make a in above
Iormula as 5 and Vs
0.12 Vn. i.e. 12, the absolute Iault level becomes 13.2 volts (110
x 0.12). Whenever voltage crosses this Iault level relay picks up
and trips according to selected trip time characteristics.
The trip time oI the Trip Relay (R1) will depend upon Trip Time
Characteristic selected and magnitude oI Iault in case oI Normal
Inverse Trip Time Characteristics or DeIinite Time in case oI
DeIinite Time Characteristics.

2.3.3 Setting Alarm Level for Alarm Relay
MND11 has one
additional Alarm
Voltage setting. It can
be set Irom 2 to 32 oI
Vn in steps oI 2.
Alarm
level is set using the middle block oI
Iour DIP Switches on the Iront panel
as shown in Fig. 3. The method oI
setting is same as that Ior setting
Normal Fault Level` explained above.
Alarm level Vis is given by Iormula,
Vis 0.02 x ( 1 + b ) Vn
Where,
Vis Alarm level (Alarm Voltage Level) in Volts.
Vn Rated PT Voltage (110 Volts).
b Weight oI switches in ON position.
For e.g. Alarm is required iI Iault voltage is more than
20 oI the rated voltage. Then to achieve this, put switch
no. 4 and 1 with b 1 and 8 respectively in ON position.
This makes b in above Iormula as 9 and Vis 0.20Vn
i.e. 20. Alarm will occur when Iault voltage reaches a
level oI 20 oI Vn i.e. when absolute voltage
becomes 22 volts.
NOTE: Alarm Relay is R2 Relay, which cannot
be used Ior Tripping.
Trip Relay is R1 Relay.

2.3.4 Time Multiplier Setting (TMS)
This Ieature oIIers various
options oI Trip Time Ior a
selected Trip Time
Characteristic. The Time
Multiplication Factor can be
set Irom 0.1 to 1.6 in steps oI
0.1 using the last block oI Iour
DIP switches shown in Fig. 4.
This means in case oI Inverse
Trip Time Characteristics,
MND11 oIIers 16 parallel
curves corresponding to each
Time Multiplier Setting and in
case oI DeIinite Trip Time
mode, the trip time can be set Irom 100msec to 160secs. The
method oI setting this switch is similar to one explained above.
Trip time T is given by Iormula,
T k ( 0.1 + t )
Where,
T Trip time in seconds.
K Constant depending on Trip Time Characteristic
selected. Value oI k Ior diIIerent characteristics are as indicated
below.
Normal Inverse when Iault is 10Vn ....... 5.7
DeIinite Time ( 1.0sec ) ....... 1.0
DeIinite Time ( 10 sec ) ....... 10.0
DeIinite Time ( 100sec) ........ 100.0
t Weight oI switch in ON position
1 0.80
2 O 0.40
3 N 0.20
4 0.10
Fig. 4: shows DIP
switch to Set TMS
12
For e.g. Time Multiplier required is 1, then to achieve this
put switch no. 1 and 4 to ON position. This will make t
0.9 to give Time Multiplying Factor 1. In case oI Inverse
Trip Time Characteristics, trip time k` corresponds to trip
time obtained Irom the curve. In the same example iI
DeIinite Time 1sec range is selected then relay will trip
aIter 1sec as soon as voltage exceeds Iault level.
2.4 OPERATION
During normal operation the Power On LED, and one oI
the Iour yellow LEDs indicating the selected Trip Time
Characteristic will glow. Whenever voltage exceeds set
value Vs, Trip LED will start blinking at a Irequency oI
1sec and will continue till Trip Relay operates. It will stop
blinking and will remain permanently ON as soon as relay
trips. Whenever voltage exceeds set value Vis, and
remains Ior 5 sec. Alarm Relay operates. The output relay
contacts are selI reset` type (i.e. they will reset as soon as
Iault gets cleared) whereas Trip LED has to be reset
manually. Press Reset` button to reset the trip LED
indication (it is not possible to reset Trip indication unless
Iault is cleared). Reset button is used only Ior resetting the
trip indication, it does not aIIect the Iault detection
Iunction oI Relay (i.e. even iI operator Iorgets to reset the
Trip indication, MND11 will still detect the Iault iI occurs
and trips, only thing is in such case, Trip LED will not
blink when it senses the Iault).
NOTE: Alarm Indication is by blinking the Trip LED
at slower rate compared to the normal blinking during
Fault.
