Kathy becomes a councillor
KaTHy Hodson has been elected as a new Conservative councillor for Heswall ward. Mrs Hodson, wife of former wirral mayor andrew Hodson, won the seat with a huge majority of 794 at the recent by-election following the death of long-time councillor Peter Johnson. The UK independence Party candidate david Scott came second, forcing labour into third. The results were as follows: Barbara Florence Burton (Green Party) 110 Kathryn anne Hodson (Conservative) 1,254 Mike Holliday (labour) 289 Greg North (Trade Unionists and Socialists against Cuts) 19 david anthony Scott (UK independence) 460 Bus service concern CONCerNS have been raised about the withdrawal of a bus service linking Heswall with arrowe Park Hospital. The 272 service which runs from the hospital, along Barnston road to Heswall and then into Neston is being replaced with a new Merseytravel bus between the hospital and Gills lane. There are fears that people living between the Glegg arms and Barnston village will lose their direct service to the hospital and will have to catch a bus into Heswall first. People living between Thingwall Corner and Gills lane will lose their direct service to Heswall. See page 10 for full details Castle Singers in concert SPriNG is nearly here and it wont be long before the start of the concert season for Heswalls Castle Singers. The first concert for the choir will be on Friday 26th April to help the Marie Curie Cancer Care Charity. They do sterling work in supporting and caring for cancer patients and their families. The concert will take place at Heswall Hall, Heswall, at 7.45pm. Tickets, priced 7.50, are available from choir members or by phoning 342 4226. Youth sports evenings Friday youth sports activities, including football, cricket, dodgeball, rounders and more are available for young people at Pensby Sports College, irby road, 7pm 9pm. They can be homed as indoor cats, or to a home with a safe private garden where they can venture outside if they want, initially under supervision. a flipping marvellous day at Barnston school

THe aroma of pancakes filled Barnston Primary School on Shrove Tuesday, when the children and their families enjoyed a lovely breakfast of tempting pancakes together before lessons started. The schools wonderful chefs worked incredibly hard keeping up with demand, many returned for seconds as they were so delicious. Many thanks to all those parents who helped, the children had a lovely time and we raised valuable funds for school. Spring into action

March is when bulbs such as the joyful yellow daffodils make their appearance. Smaller flowers are also worth growing such as anemone blanda which you will see in woodland. The wild flowers are white but there are also blue and pink varieties. Another lovely little flowering bulb is Chionodoxa which has blue or pink flowers and well worth growing in pots or in the ground interspersed with smaller daffodils. You will need well drained soil in a sunny position for best results. Shrubs start flowering with Forsythia and the flowering currant, Ribes sanguineum. Another early flowering shrub is the flowering quince, Chaenomoles. These spiny shrubs do well in mixed hedging or trained against the wall of a house. Flowers come in many colours such as bright red, pink or cream and will brighten up any garden in spring. Jobs to do in the garden include taking the shears to winter flowering heathers just after flowering. Give them a trim to remove dead flowers and encourage new foliage. I also cut off the dead heads from Hydrangeas making sure that I only cut off the dead flower head and leave the

new buds below as they will give you flowers the coming year. Start planting hardy vegetable seeds such as broad beans, carrots, spinach and some salads like rocket and hardy lettuce. If its wet and cold just wait a couple of weeks for the soil to warm up. Indoors or in a greenhouse it is time to sow brassicas such as cabbage, Brussels sprouts and also leeks in pots ready to transplant later. I prepare my pots for summer in March. I have a selection of Hostas growing in pots and each year I remove the larger plants from the pot and cut it up into pieces with a spade then replant into new compost. This keeps the plants healthy and leaves me with spare plants to give to friends or clients. Any other perennial plants in pots get a boost by either being re-potted into a slightly larger pot or I remove the top few centimetres of soil and replace with John Innes No 3 compost. Give them all a feed with a slow release fertilizer. This goes for the rest of the garden too. I use pelleted chicken manure and give all plants in the garden a feed in March.
