IN THE NEWS
New homes spark school funds plea COUNCIL education bosses want developers to pay nearly 250,000 to pay for extra school places if they build 65 new homes at Milton Green, near Tattenhall. Cheshire West and Chester Council doesnt oppose the scheme but wants a contribution of 246,000 from Marbury Properties due to there being insufficient places at local schools. Village pub plans agreed PLANS for a new pub at The Farmers Arms, in Huxley, have been agreed. The proposals include a new pub, restaurant and flat as well as 46 space car park and beer garden. Some concerns were raised about demolishing the building but the parish council is keen for the site to remain a pub. Running race is a real beast RUNNERS with a sturdy disposition are invited to tackle the Northern Beast on Sunday 17th March at Kelsall Hill Equestrian Centre. There is a choice of five or 10 mile runs with 40 jumps, two water complexes, woods, camouflage netting, the hill and sheep dip pond to deal with. It is an offence, for which you can receive a fine, (of up to 1,000 if it goes to court) if you fail to clear up after your dog. Dog waste, once wrapped, can be placed in the bins on High Street and in the special bins around the village. Please help keep our village safe. Thank you.

All hands to the pumps at beer festival

TARPORLEy CE Primary Schools annual beer festival celebrated its 7th year at the end of January. Despite a deluge of snow people still turned out in their hundreds to sample the delights of 25 real ales and seven ciders and perrys. They were also treated to live music from local musicians Wood n Wire and The Otherside. A total of 6,100 was raised over the two nights and with matched funding from Barclays Bank and United Utilities a further 1000 was donated. The money raised will be spent on the development of the outdoor area at the Primary School and installing and upgrading the existing play equipment. In addition a donation has been made to improve the toilets at Tarporley Community Centre The beer festival team would like to say Thank you to all those who supported the event and in particular Northwich Tyres and Auto Care for sponsoring the festival glasses and Big Storage Chester for covering our printing costs. Our wonderfully bright festival polo shirts were sponsored for the first time this year by Lookers Vauxhall whose sales district manager Mike Oliver is pictured behind the bar with the team. If you didnt make it this year put the date in your diary for The Eighth Tarporley Beer Festival which will be held over the weekend of 31st January and 1st February 2014.

Cloudy2Clear Windows Service With A Smile!

Its been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that its all about service. Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But its not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didnt focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didnt expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole. EldERlY CaRE You have a choice!

EstablishEd in 1968, we are now one of the oldest domiciliary agencies in the UK. As I listened to the news this week about the changes proposed to the funding of Social Care, it saddened me to see that there is still so little financial support for those who wish to remain living in their own home and yet need some care support. Even with the new caps and thresholds proposed, there will still be a large group of people who will not be able to afford care at home. Through SOLLA (the Society of Later Life Advisors) you will soon have access to advisors throughout the country via our website. After meetings with our local SOLLA consultant, (who incidentally comes from Bunbury!) I was shown very effective ways of covering the cost of elderly care now, and planning for the possible cost in the future, so things are looking up! All Bunbury Carer Companions are self employed, giving you and your family the freedom to choose how you are cared for, therefore maintaining your independence. We recruit on your behalf ensuring

that you have someone who can spend just that little bit of extra time providing personal care, housekeeping, shopping, transport and most importantly, companionship.

so why not consider employing your own Carer or Companion?

The Bunbury Agency is pleased to introduce the services of Independent Consultants who specialise in Care Fees Solutions.

We believe, there is an answer

As the government propose to change the ratio of children to Nursery Assistants, have you considered the benefits of having an experienced Nanny or Mothers Help looking after your children at home, or an Au Pair giving you that extra pair of hands? This can be a Hundreds less expensive option and certainly a less stressful alternative.

aNd FiNallY.

We are members of the United Kingdom Home Care Association. All our Carer Companions are recruited in line with their Code of Practice. Daily Carers charge 10 - 12 per hour. The Agency only charges a one off fee. (3 weeks wages for permanent staff or 25% of total wage for temporary staff).

due to an increase demand in for our pr ivate dai Respite and tem ly, porary Carers an d Compa nions, we have placemen ts availabl e fo has expe r anyone who rience in elderly care and good ho us skills. O nline trai ekeeping n availabl e via our ing is now website.

Rotarians thank villagers

TWo weekend collections of unwanted bicycles has resulted in the generous donation of 42 bikes by people living in/around Tarporley. The collections were organised by the Rotary Club of Tarporley, in support of a campaign started last year by the Rotary Club of Chester. The bikes will soon be on their way to Wiltshire (courtesy of Bibby Transport ltd.) where they will be delivered to the the national charity jole rider in support of their Bikes4Africa campaign. The bikes are first serviced by inmates of H M Prison service, before being packed into sea containers and shipped out to The Gambia and distributed to pre-selected schools. The bikes remain school property, with teachers allocating them to the children who need them most. When a child graduates from school, their bike is re-allocated to another child. The Rotary Club of Tarporley, and the school children of Africa, thank you for the very kind donation of your bike/bicycles. They will be donating 10/ bike (from the Clubs Charity Funds and from donations already received) to jole rider to cover their shipment costs. If you would like to make a donation (of a bike or money) then you can still do so by emailing: international@ tarporleyrotary.org.uk or by calling call 730079.

Nows the time to give your fina

January has come and gone, along with the snow (hopefully the last of the winter), the festive season is long forgotten, and I dont know about you but Im definitely looking forward to the first signs of spring.
For me, this is one of the busiest times of the year because spring also heralds the end of the tax year and if this doesnt prompt you to think about giving your finances a spring clean, it really should! Hopefully, most of you reading this column have utilised your ISA allowances over the years, either via cash ISAs or investment ISAs and even if youre not in a position to make further contributions, it would be unwise to simply rest on your laurels and assume that the ISAs you have are still the best for you. If you hold cash ISAs you may well have been shopping around for the best of a pretty poor range of interest rates on a regular basis, and perhaps even moving to a different bank or building society to benefit from a better interest rate.
What if your ISA holdings are equity-based?

With personal finance grabbing more and more column inches in the press, many investors have accumulated a hotchpotch portfolio of investment ideas over the years as each ISA season heralds the discovery of the next must-have asset class or fund. And its easy to see why. The choice is potentially bewildering. There are around 2,500 retail funds in the UK into which investors can invest their stocks & shares ISA allowance. Faced with the challenge of finding the right one, its easy to see why some base their decision on whatever is the latest investment fashion, the most impressive advert or the best claim to superior past performance.

Each investors objective will be unique to their own individual needs and goals. Whether you are looking to provide additional income in retirement, building a capital sum for the future or a combination of both, ensuring that your investments are working together is vital for your future financial wellbeing. Poppy appeal success

THE Tarporley Branch of the `Royal British Legion has once more shown its fundraising skills by yet again improving on its Poppy Appeal total. Snakes and dragons at Utkinton

RECENTLy, the infants at Utkinton St Pauls Primary School enjoyed a Chinese dance experience as part of their work around the topic of Chinese New year. Chinese New year, held on the 10th February this year, is to be known as the year of the snake. To celebrate, children learnt a dragon dance, replicating the type associated with this famous event. Dancing to a range of Chinese music, whilst hidden underneath a colourful fabric, the children practiced moving in time to the rhythm - working in careful co-operation with their classmates. The children also designed and made their own snakes to fit with the theme, and celebrated with a party on the day.

Bunbury Parish Plan

EVERyonE in Bunbury should by now have received their questionnaire and should be returning them to the various collection points by 17th March. Once all the questionnaires have been received the draw for the prizes will take place and the task of analysing all of the responses will commence. The parish council hopes to publish a draft plan for early consultation in the summer when there will be an exhibition in the village and a public meeting to discuss the outcomes.

with Angela Bartlett
Q. I have stubborn fatty deposits around my waist and I was wondering if there are any effective salon treatments that I can have to help support my exercise and diet regime? A. We have been using Bioslimming for several years now and find it a very effective treatment for areas of soft, fatty tissue that are often difficult to budge. The treatment was developed by Provence Cosmetics in France, it has been a hit in Beverly Hills for some time now and we were one of the first salons to introduce it in the UK. This revolutionary salon body contouring treatment is a two step procedure which takes about 90 minutes to reduce fat and improve the appearance of cellulite. The product treatment formulas and homecare products are unique and contain thermo agents, both hot and cold, plant extracts, essential oils, algae extracts and caffeine. Its an ideal treatment to combine with diet and exercise and for more information visit the March newsletter page of our website www.angelabartlett. co.uk Q. My skin has become very dry over the Winter months. What can you recommend to help relieve it? A. This is a question that comes up every year. The combination of cold weather and central heating is a difficult environment for skin. If your skin is prone to seasonal dehydration try switching from a face wash to a more gentle cream cleanser to ensure that precious, naturally occurring, moisture-retaining oils are not stripped from your skin. Give it plenty of extra protection when you are out-of-doors with a richer, heavier day cream and add moistureboosting products to your regime such as hydrating boosters containing hyaluronic acid to trap and retain moisture. Treat your skin to a twice weekly hydrating and moisturising face mask and a monthly salon facial with galvanic iontophoresis treatment to give you beautifully soft, moisturised skin.

Look up....
We would all like more space in our homes and with houses in the UK getting smaller, space is at a premium. But what if there was an affordable way to create more space in our homes? A simple solution for all those people fed up of living among clutter and one that doesnt require planning permission or any major structural building work. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. A precarious scramble across dusty beams, torch in hand; grabbing whats needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of the floor space in an average home. So shouldnt you be making the most of it? And thats where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton over five years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making the loft easily accessible. And thats all it does. Its not a generic building company, and its not jack-of-all-trades. MTLL only installs loft hatches, ladders, boarding, lighting and insulation. Its what the company does all day, every day, using qualified local installers who are reliable, tidy and efficient. The latest MTLL franchisee to open covers Crewe and Chester and is run by skilled tradesman, Adam Shepherd...Our average job is about

More Than Loft Ladders is already a trusted name in the north west with over 2,500 successful installations, and I really wanted to bring it here to Cheshire...Its such a great and cost effective way for people to gain the extra space they need, added Adam. TARPORlEY HIGH SCHOOl &

Students make the headlines
A GROUP of news-faring y10 students from Mrs Eatons English class were excited to hear that their story idea had been well received by a producer from the BBC School Report project. They had been selected to produce a film and accompanying article exploring the safety of social networking sites for Safer Internet Day. Soon after, a day of intensive preparation and scriptwriting ensued with students researching the topic including high profile cases involving the use of Facebook and Twitter. A film crew from BBC Television Centre in London arrived to shoot the piece. Firstly, students were encouraged to debate the use of Twitter and the dangers of young people using such sites whilst the BBC captured every word. Aspiring reporters worked closely with online journalist Phil Harlow editing the script ready for the presenters Harry Warr and Annie Huntbach. Later they were delighted to see that their film was published on the BBC website alongside the article written by Ellie Corlett-Moss and Annie Huntbach. When students realised a link to their film had been selected to appear on the main BBC News homepage for the majority of Safer Internet Day they knew theyd made it! On 21st March the students, alongside more of their classmates, will be reporting news for the BBC along with many schools across the country as part of the official BBC School Report day. Students will also be uploading their news items to the school website on this day and the BBC website will link directly to it. year 12 and 13 students were given a fantastic opportunity to show their talented work off in The Marmalade Caf in Chester. This work is on display for the whole month of February and everyone is welcome to pop in and enjoy the work within this public setting. Well done to Emma onions, Lorna Robey, Catriona Elvin and Jade Downes who all have their work in the exhibition. The exhibition is already receiving lots of positive feedback on how talented these Tarporley students are! Thank you to Dawn from Marmalade for allowing the work to be on display. 52 To advertise call 01244 350398 www.tarporleytalk.com

School links up with local businesses

THE Tarporley Business Alliance has been an on-going project for the past six years with its aims mainly focusing on networking and general support for each business in Tarporley and the immediate surrounding areas. Recently, Angela Bartlett and Katrine Lidster have enlisted the help of two A-Level Business Studies and Economics students from Tarporley High School along with the Head of Business Studies and Economics teacher Alison Wade. Together, we would like to regenerate the Tarporley Business Alliance and make it increasingly useful for all businesses in Tarporley so that each business can support and work together to benefit themselves and each other as much as possible. Within the next month we hope to have hosted our first networking meeting to begin the new start to the Tarporley Business Alliance and we hope to see many of our current and new members there also. We would be delighted to contact any more businesses that wish to be involved in the Tarporley Business Alliance to give you any additional information. Pictured are Gemma Penk, Miss Wade and Ellie Sharp

Two students at Tarporley have been offered a place to study at oxbridge next year. Zak Dunstone (Mathematics, Cambridge University) and James Melia (Engineering, Oxford University) are delighted with their offers having had to go through a rigorous selection process which included interviews and entrance tests.

year 11 student Luke White has been chosen to play for Worcester Warriors Premiership Rugby Club for the under 18 squad a year above his age.

Broadband speeds in Tarporley

CONNECTING Cheshire is a joint project between local councils whose aim is to harness government funds to bring high speed broadband to all parts of the county, writes Ernest Boynes The timing of the provision to an area depends upon the demand in that area as shown by the number of residents and businesses that have registered. For Tarporley only 63 potential users have registered! There are 1895 residents and 148 businesses on Tarporley exchange, but with only 63 registrations having been received, that is 3% of potential users, this apparent lack of interest will put Tarporley way down on the list for provision In Tarporley, the most likely provision would initially be FTTC (Fibre to the cabinet). This means that the existing copper wire cable from the exchange in Park Road to the various cabinets spread around the village would be replaced with cable constructed of fibre optic. Download speeds would rise from the current speed of about 10Mbs to 40Mbs, bringing a faster and more reliable connection allowing people to watch TV or films on line without endless buffering. you will be able much more reliably to contact family and friends with High definition video. So if you want high speed broadband in Tarporley register now at www.connectingcheshire. org.uk 54 To advertise call 01244 350398

FOOTBAll TAlK... TARPORlEY VICS FC

Wet weather leaves Vics with hefty fixture pile-up

TARPORLEy Vics First Team enjoyed their first outing of the year, after playing their last competitive game on 8th December 2012, and they returned from title chasing Poynton FC with an excellent 3-3 draw. The poor weather since the start of 2013 has resulted in postponements and fixture changes, leaving Tarporley Vics First Team with a large number of fixtures to rearrange over the coming weeks. These games should allow the team to build momentum before their Crewe FA Cup Semi Final against Sandbach United on 16th March. Whilst this game is an away fixture the squad will welcome as much support as possible as they try to reach their first final since 2005. RESERVES Tarporley Vics Reserves continued their winning run to record three more wins and they have now overtaken Crewe FC Reserves & Duddon FC at the top of the Crewe & District League First Division. With only three games remaining in the League, Tarporley Vics need to maintain winning form to capture the title. Everyone involved with Tarporley Vics hope that the young squad, expertly marshalled by veteran Chris Butters, can deliver on their potential and claim the silverware! With the League drawing to a close Tarporley Vics Reserves are also in Cup action, as they play a round-robin tournament for the AJ Cooke Trophy. Tarporley Vics Reserves have been drawn against Duddon, Crewe FC Reserves and Rudheath Social Reserves. The first game against Crewe FC resulted in a 3-1 defeat putting an end to a seven game winning run. ChEShIRE VICTORy The Cheshire FA Representative side, managed for a third consecutive season by Steve Lloyd, have also returned to action and claimed a 1st leg lead by defeating the Lancashire & Cheshire League 1-0 in the North West Inter League Cup Semi-Final. We are delighted that two Tarporley Vics players have been included within the squad. Goal-keeper Chris Jones has returned to excellent form following a year off recovering from a knee injury and the necessary reconstructive surgery and recuperation. Pete Aidley has enjoyed his first full season with Tarporley Vics First Team after three years at Loughborough University. Congratulations to Pete & Chris and good luck in the 2nd leg.

Part-time firefighters wanted in Tarporley

CHESHIRE Fire and Rescue Service is looking to recruit part-time firefighters at its Tarporley Fire Station and is asking local residents who live within five minutes of the fire station on Birch Heath Road to get involved. Part time firefighters, known as on-call, play a vital role within the fire and rescue service and are trained to the same level as full-time firefighters. They also get involved in a wide variety of situations as well as fighting fires, such as floods, road accidents, chemical spills and attending community events. The service is looking for a number of people to work part time as on-call firefighters at Tarporley Fire Station and ideally these individuals should be able to offer weekday, evenings and/or weekend cover. These firefighers are alerted to incidents via a pager device and need to be within five minutes of the station while they are on-call. On average, on-call firefighters are called out two or three times a week and attend a drill session for a couple of hours each week and for this cover can earn in the region of 5,000 per annum. Paul Hancock, Cheshire Fire and Rescues Chief Fire Officer, said: Working with the fire and rescue service is a thoroughly rewarding experience. It gives individuals the opportunity to work with people from different backgrounds and meet people in the community as well as responding to emergency incidents within Cheshire. On-call firefighters come from all walks of life, including: shopkeepers, stay at home mums, builders, plumbers, farmers, secretaries, company directors and people who may not currently be employed, and work alongside their wholetime (full-time) colleagues. Head of Service Delivery Terry McDermott, added: People who apply must be able to respond quickly to the fire station, have a real wish to support their local community, have an enthusiasm and willingness to work in a team environment, and have a reasonable level of fitness. If you think you have got what it takes to join us or would like to find out more please contact the Station or call in for a chat on drill night which is Thursdays from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. If you would like more information please call the station on 01829 733797 any Thursday evening or visit www.cheshirefire.gov.uk

Trophy time for Tarvins tennis champions

TARVIN Tennis Club held its annual AGM in early February at the Vicars Cross Golf Club. Around 40 members and friends heard reports of reasonable playing progress despite the loss of some key players through illness, injury or retirement, healthy finances and plans for the future development of club facilities. The club still fields three teams in the West Cheshire Winter League, a team in the Glan Aber Winter Floodlit League and five teams in the Chester and District Summer League. Junior tennis continues its progress under the sure guidance of coach Gary Ward and there are five or six friendly adult sessions which take place during the daytime throughout the year. Chairman Rob Millar, Secretary Felicity Pochin, Treasurer Allyson Clarkson, Ladies Captain Wendy Rae and Mens Captain Keith Barker, together with eight other committee members were re-elected en masse and the presentation of trophies was made by President Barry Cooper. Members then enjoyed a tasty and plentiful hot meal followed by a challenging but lighthearted quiz.

Mens B Captain Graham Bunting holds the Summer League Division 3 Shield surrounded by his squad members.

thERE are few more picturesque settings for golf in the UK than at Pryors hayes Golf Club at Willington Road in Oscroft. in the 20 years since the club, affectionately known as the hayes, opened its doors to golfers, visitors and the Cheshire community, so much has changed at the club. Significant investment in the upkeep and drainage of the course itself makes Pryors Hayes a regular go to venue for individual golfers, societies and, of course its loyal membership. The course is open for almost the whole year and, while it is a comfortable distance to walk, it presents an enjoyable challenge to golfers of all abilities. Golf is clearly its raison detre, but Pryors Hayes can rightly be proud of its wider offer which has contributed to being declared Club Mirrors Golf Club of The Year for the past three years. Peckforton and Beeston WI In February we were transported to the depths of the jungle in Fiona Smiths talk Guyana A walk on the Wild Side. Fiona was born and spent her early childhood in this north eastern corner of South America and when she was given the opportunity to join a medical expedition led by Colonel John Blashford Snell to carry out vaccinations she jumped at the chance. The visitors experienced life in the native Indian way, sleeping in hand woven hammocks in grass huts, cooking over open fires with pots made of clay brought on foot from many miles away, and eating all manner of things including snake, alligator, cassava bread, etc. The people were extremely kind, gentle and welcoming, western dress had reached the village due to occasional visitors, but other than that it was like going back to the Stone Age with graters made of flint hammered into slabs of wood, string made from lianas, and animals hunted with hand made weapons such as bows and arrows (sometimes topped with poison or a paralyzing agent). Our meeting was topped off as usual with delicious tea and cakes. Do come along and visit us you may enjoy it. Our next meeting is on 6th March when we will have a talk about Butterfly Conservation and the Butterflies of Cheshire. 86 To advertise call 01244 350398 Did you spot him?
