The ultimate goal is to reach maximum efficiency and provide the best service to its community with the staff and resources at hand STRUCTURE OF THE POLICE DEPARTMENT -there must be a delegation of authority in which personnel take orders from and are responsible to those in positions of authority directly above them -Larger departments use precincts or districts to divide the jurisdiction and command - Written policies and guide lines are used to standardize police behavior and limit discretion in certain situations such as high speed chases YARD STICK- police effency -response time -arrest rates -public fear of crime -citizen satisfaction 911 response time- want the police to respond as quickly as possible. Thats why sectors etc is a good way to get it INCIDENT DRIVEN POLICING -reactive approach to policing that emphasizes a speedy response to calls for service -approximately 50% of calls are from 911 calls and not for police them selves response time is a measurement of police efficiency based on the rapidity with which calls for service are answered -rapid response serves as a deterrent to criminals increases the apprehension rate and citizen confidence in police 10 minutes isnt a good time response TOTAL RESPONSE TIME -The time from the moment the crime is commited to the time the police first arrives on the scene THREE PARTS 1. the crime commited to the time a person calls the police 2. the time for 911 to get the call and let the police kno 3. the time from the dispatch to the police arrive on the scene 4. citizens waiting several minutes before colling the police is a problem, usually 510 minutes for serious crimes Differential response -a strategy for answering calls for service in which response time is adapted to the seriousness of the call

POLICE OFFICERS AND COMMUNITY POLICING -patrol officers have much more freedom to improvise and they are expected to develpoe personal relationships with residents and encourage them to become involved in making the community safer PROBLEM ORIENTED POLICING -a philosophy that requires police to identify potential criminal activity and develop stragies to provent and respond to the criminal activity -this is a change from the call response HOT SPOT OF Cme -part of problem oriented policing -two impt aspects of problem solving policing are crime hotspots and crime mapping HOT SPOTS concentrated ares of high criminal activity that draw a directed police response Crackdown are aggressive directed police response that focus on a particular crime or set of crimes in a hotspot CRIME MAPPING provides departments with colored maps that allow them to easily spot patterns of crime and determine where increased coverage is needed.
