Tin is one of the oldest metals known to man. The industrial applications of tin has been pervasive ever since man discovered that heating tin mineral in charcoal produces a silvery white metal. The annual demand for tin throughout the world stands at 350,000 Tonnes. The production of tin however is concentrated heavily in the south-east with China and Indonesia producing over 2/3rd of Tin in the world.
The following pie-chart represents the percentage of major producers of Tin in the world.
Applications of Tin:
About half of all tin that is produced is used for solder. This is usually used for joining electric circuits. Traditionally solder is made from a lead-tin alloy, but due to the hazardous nature of lead it is being replaced by other suitable metals. Tin is used for coating lead, zinc of steel to prevent corrosion. Steel containers coated with tin are commonly used to preserve food. Tin is used in many specialized alloys including pewter and bronze. It is also used to create a special type of bronze called bell metal that is used for making bells. Tin has also been used to create decorative housewares. Tin is decorated in a process called punched tin and it is commonly used to make decorative lanterns.

Molten glass used in the production of windows is often floated on top of molten tin to create a flat surface. A chemical compound of tin and fluoride, known as stannous fluoride, is used in toothpaste to improve dental health. Tin, together with lead, is also used in the metal pipes of the pipe organ. A certain type of chemical compounds of tin called organo-tin compounds are used to stabilize PVC plastics and as a biocide.
Tin in India:
India produces a meagre 10 Tonnes of Tin every year. Every year India imports 4000 Tonnes of Tin in the forms of Scrap and Ingots. Major suppliers of Tin to India are China and Indonesia. In India, the Tin is also traded in the MCX exchange and the prices of Tin ingots are determined by the London metal exchange. Tin is imported into India either as alloyed or non-alloyed. Based on the form of tin, the following are the specifications of Tin as classified by the customs department of India.
Item Description TIN WASTE AND SCRAP TIN BARS, RODS, PROFILES AND WIRE OTHER ARTICLES OF TIN
The Tin ingots, thus imported are further processed by secondary manufacturing companies to produce tin sheets, cans etc. The major players in the secondary Tin industry are Tata Tin and SAIL.
