Agricultre training projects.. from page 1 vegetables have been one of the highly-valued crops in the country today. On September 28, another agriocultural program was conducted dubbed as Technology Forum cum seminar on SP Using CPM. It was held in Binukawan, Bagac, Bataan with 59 farmers in attendance to avail of the said training program. The following day, September 28, 2012, a training on aerobic rice technology was conducted. Fifty (50) farmers were trained under this activity held at the Farmers Training Center in BPSU Abucay Campus. Aerobic rice technology was first introduced in the Philippines by the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) approximately ten years ago. Field trials and experiments were established in the provinces of Tarlac and Nueva Ejica. The technology showed favorable impacts. Its potentials, as well as the challenges that could befall, were identified. It was found out that while aerobic rice technology could help reduce water requirement by 30-50% during the dry season thereby decreasing input cost, the yield could decline by 15-20%.

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has partnered with the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) for the promotion of Philippine Aquasilviculture, which aims to protect and restore habitats for fisheries and aquatic resources.
Atty. Asis Perez, BFAR Director, said the twopronged objectives of the project would also result in higher job generation and livelihood for the marginal fisherfolk and the fisheries graduates as well. Under the P237.5-million Aquasilviculture, BFAR and CHED aim to plant 11 million mangrove trees for mangrove habitat rehabilitation, establish 62 units of multi-species hatchery, and develop 100 technodemo aquasilvi-farms in coastal areas nationwide. Training on Off-Season Tomato Production

The BPSU Abucay Campus is still in active provision of trainings for Off-season tomato production (Kamlong Technology) to farmers in the province. The training was held in Samal, Bataan and trained sixty (60) farmers on the use and implementation of kamlong technology. Held on September 7 and 14, 2012, the training provided advanced training on the growing and production of kamlong. It is known that tomatoes are difficult to grow during the hot, wet season. Flooding, water logged soils diseases and high temperatures can significantly reduce yield. Kamlong technology implements grafting tomatoes onto selected rootstocks of eggplant to minimize problems caused by flooding and soil borne diseases. Most eggplant lines will graft successfully with tomato lines. The key is to identify eggplant rootstock that will maintain high yields and fruit quality. The lines should also be resistant to bacterial wilt (Ralstonia solanacearum) and other soil borne diseases.
