Position Available Summer 2013: Policy and Community Organizing Intern

General Description About the organization and position: The Policy and Community Organizing Intern (intern) will assist College and Community Fellowship (CCF) in carrying out strategies designed to increase the involvement of CCFs students in our community building activities and our advocacy campaigns. CCFs advocacy campaigns focus on removing barriers to higher education for currently and formerly incarcerated individuals. The intern will assist with research, base-building, direct-action, and coalition building to support the three campaigns that the Education from the Inside Out (EIO) Coalition (www.eiocoalition.org) is currently working on. The EIO Coalition is led by CCF, the Fortune Societys David Rothenberg Center for Public Policy and the Center for Community Alternatives, and has 3 campaigns: (1) a campaign to reinstate Pell Grants eligibility to incarcerated students; (2) a campaign to reform current admissions policies at the State University of New York (SUNY); and a campaign to reinstate TAP Grants eligibility to incarcerated students in New York State. CCFs community meetings focus on building a strong community of women who share resources, support one another and actively participate in CCFs activities, such as our Financial Literacy Workshops, Theater for Social Change, Health Workshops, and CCFs advocacy work. Our ideal candidate believes in the missions of CCF and EIO, has community organizing and policy/research experience, and familiarity with social networking tools.

Duties and Responsibilities: Support Policy Associate and Community Organizer in coordinating activities related to advocacy campaigns (coalition meetings, panels, advocacy trips, etc.) Assist Community Organizer in implementing partner outreach strategies Assist with research pertaining to the three campaigns; help develop additional campaign materials Work with Community Organizer on social media strategy; Manage social media presence including Twitter, Facebook, and Blogs Assist in preparation of materials for presentations and events Provide administrative support to Policy Associate and Community Organizer Core Competencies/Qualifications: Experience community organizing and/or working on policy issues Detail oriented, with excellent organizational skills Ability to multi-task, set priorities, and meet deadlines Ability to work well independently and with a team Ability to research and organize information related to tasks Interest in criminal justice reform and belief in the organizations mission Ability and desire to work with a diverse group of people Experience using Twitter, Facebook and blogs Working knowledge of MS Office tools (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) Currently a graduate student of Social Work with a concentration in community organizing, or related discipline desired (also accepting applicants from undergraduate students) Excellent communication, writing and people skills
