The Wisconsin River first drew settlers to the area during the mid19th century. The area had been called "Big Bull Flats" or "Big Bull Falls" by the original French explorers because the long rapids in the river created many bubbles, called bulle in French. Wausau means "a faraway place" or "a place which can be seen from far away" in the Ojibwe language. Wausaus favorable location on the Wisconsin River was partly responsible for the citys survival. By 1852, Wausau had been established as a town, focused on the lumber industry, and it continued to grow and mature. Wausau Insurance Companies was established in the 20th century and its logo, the downtown Milwaukee Road railroad depot set against the backdrop of the communitys skyline, put Wausau in the minds of people across the country.
