The 7 Wonders of the world

New 7 Wonders of the World (2001-2007) was an initiative started in 2001 to choose Wonders of the World from a selection of 200 existing monuments. The popularity poll was led by Canadian-Swiss Bernard Weber and organized by the New7 Wonders Foundation based in Zurich, Switzerland, with winners announced on July 7, 2007 in Lisbon. The winners were: The Taj Mahal is a white marble mausoleum located in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India. It was built byMughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The Taj Mahal is widely recognized as "the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world's heritage" Chichen Itza was a large pre-Columbian city built by the Maya civilization. Thearchaeological site is located in the municipality of Tinum, in the Mexican state of Yucatn. Christ the Redeemer is a statue of Jesus Christ in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; considered the largest Art Deco statue in the world and the 5th largest statue of Jesus in the world. A symbol of Brazilian Christianity, the statue has become an icon for Rio de Janeiro and Brazil. It is made of reinforced concrete and soapstone, and was constructed between 1926 and 1931. The Colosseum, or the Coliseum, originally the Amphitheatrum Flavium , is an elliptical amphitheatre in the centre of the city of Rome, Italy, the largest ever built in the Roman Empire, built ofconcrete and stone. It is considered one of the greatest works of Roman architecture and Roman engineering. The Great Wall of China is a series of fortifications made of stone, brick, tamped earth, wood, and other materials, generally built along an east-to-west line across the historical northern borders of China in part to protect the Chinese Empire or its prototypical states against intrusions by various nomadic groups or military incursions by various warlike peoples or forces. Machu Picchu is a 15th-century Inca site located 2,430 metres above sea level. Machu Picchu is located in the Cusco Region of Peru, South America. It is situated on a mountain ridge above the Urubamba Valley in Peru, which is 80 kilometres northwest of Cusco and through which the Urubamba River flows. Most archaeologists believe that Machu Picchu was built as an estate for the Inca emperor Pachacuti (14381472). Often referred to as the "City of the Incas", it is perhaps the most familiar icon of Inca civilization. Petra is a historical and archaeological city in the Jordanian governorate of Ma'an, that is famous for its rock-cut architecture and water conduit system. The Giza Pyramid of Egypt, the only remaining Wonder of the Ancient World, was granted an honorary site.
