Lesson Plan

Title: under the sea Grade: 2nd grade Curricular Goal: The second graders will design under the sea environments based off the work of Amado Pena and Robert Schott. They will create five imaginary fish and design a scene that they live in. Each scene will have five fish and a sunken ship surrounded by coral, seaweed, and sand. This will portray what it would look like to live under the sea. National Standards: 1.1 Use a variety of art materials and techniques to express original ideas. 1.3 Use materials, techniques, processes, and tools, for the creation and exhibition of works of art in a safe and responsible manner. 3.4 Explore and recognize use of symbols, subject matter, ideas in own art work and the work of others. 3.5 Apply grade level academic vocabulary: subject matter, line, shape, color, unity, symbols, pattern, rhythm, emphasis, and landscape. Targeted Standards: The students will be able to compare and contrast realistic and imaginary styles in artwork showing natural and imaginary environments. They will be able to create a composition with a scene describing what it looks like under the sea. They will understand what shapes and lines are used to draw animals and plants that live under the sea. They will also understand how to use creative thinking to create something that exists and turn it into a fish, such as a bird fish, a fish with wings. They will also use images of a sunken ship and plant life to draw their own. Notes: Read to the class from: Fish is Fish by Leo Lionni
