How do Heat Pumps work?

A heat pump works like an air conditioning unit but in reverse. It circulates and compresses refrigerant gasses. Refrigerant gas heats to high temperatures when compressed. By transferring this heat to the water in the geyser, the heat pump is able to achieve the same water heating results as a conventional element but it uses around 1/3 of the electricity.

DOMESTIC HEAT PUMPS SAVE UP TO 70% OF WATER HEATING COSTS

FACT:ESKOM WILL INCREASE THE COST OF HEATING YOUR WATER BY AT LEAST 46% OVER THE NEXT 5 YEARS. INDIVIDUAL METROS AND COUNCILS WILL ADD TO THAT COST. YOU CAN DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

Why Heat Pumps now?

Heat pumps exactly like the ones now being used in the South African market have been used for decades around the rest of the world. SA has been slow to utilise the technology due to low energy costs, lack of information, price barriers etc. However, due to ever increasing electricity costs and environmental awareness, heat pumps are now offering a cost effective alternative to the status quo. No other low energy products provide the same versatility, reliability and savings.

KEY FEATURES AND BENEFITS of HEAT PUMPS

Can be fitted to existing geysers Starts saving you money from its first day in use Works throughout the year, day and night Fully automated controls with adjustable water temperature setting and Timer Clock Safe and reliable Easily serviceable Lower energy use means environmentally friendly - No emissions Quiet operation <50db

Why not Solar?

Solar water heating is effective and shouldnt be discredited. When installed and used correctly, it can provide a genuine alternative to element heating. There are, however, short comings such that not all properties are suitable for solar. Solar can be unreliable in winter and does not work after sunset, leading to the continued use of high cost element heating after dark. This makes solar heating less suitable for applications where hot water usage cant be restricted or carefully managed such as guest houses or sports clubs.

Why ITS Heat Pumps?

ITS has developed a patented integration technique that allows the installer to integrate the heat pumps with any existing geyser. This technique utilizes a loading valve and typically increases the hot water capacity of the geyser by 15%. Most of the other integration methods commonly used will cause a reduction in hot water delivery capacity of the geyser by up to 40%. It is also one of the only installations techniques that require no interference with the existing geyser and therefore does not affect the guarantee of the geyser.

Eskom were granted permission to raise the cost of electricity by 8% year on year for the next 5 years (start July 2013) The graph above shows how this impacts the cost of water heating. The red line projects the cost of heating water up to June 2018. The hot water usage remains the same and the price rises only by Eskoms 8%. The starting price is R1.39 per kw/h (avg for consumers using more than 600Kw per month in Cape Town Metro). The initial monthly water heating cost is set at R400. The blue line projects the cost of heating the same amount of water over the same period with the same increase in price but using a heat pump instead. Electricity can be saved and added to bottom line profit by using heat pumps instead of elements for the required water heating needs of the company/club or office environment.

How much do Heat Pumps cost?

Will a Heat Pump suit my property?

If you have been using a conventional geyser to heat the water you use daily, such as for washing, cooking and cleaning, and you have an external wall or flat surface where the unit can be positioned then a heat pump will suit your property. The existing or new geyser should be within 15m of where the heat pump will be positioned. We use the power that feeds the existing geyser to power the heat pump. To make use of the rebate opportunities and as good practice, the new or existing geyser should be installed in a way that PIRB guidelines are met. We are able to make these adjustments to the existing installation should they be required. As a PIRB registered installer, all new installations will be installed to meet PIRB standards.
