A heat pump works like an air conditioning unit but in reverse. It circulates and compresses refrigerant gasses. Refrigerant gas heats to high temperatures when compressed. By transferring this heat to the water in the geyser, the heat pump is able to achieve the same water heating results as a conventional element but it uses around 1/3 of the electricity.

Eskom were granted permission to raise the cost of electricity by 8% year on year for the next 5 years (start July 2013) The graph above shows how this impacts the cost of water heating. The red line projects the cost of heating water up to June 2018. The hot water usage remains the same and the price rises only by Eskoms 8%. The starting price is R1.39 per kw/h (avg for consumers using more than 600Kw per month in Cape Town Metro). The initial monthly water heating cost is set at R400. The blue line projects the cost of heating the same amount of water over the same period with the same increase in price but using a heat pump instead. Electricity can be saved and added to bottom line profit by using heat pumps instead of elements for the required water heating needs of the company/club or office environment.
