1 GANGSTERISM IN SCHOOLS 1.0 INTRODUCTION Gangsterism is undeniable one of the biggest issues in school, nowadays, and as it grows bigger and bigger each day, it perhaps may put us all in trouble till the end of the world. Gangsterism seems to be taken too easy. The involved parties especially parents and school administrative have took the problem for granted. To discuss about this issue more thoroughly, I've choosed two articles related to the issue which are "School gangsterism. Why blame students when some parents are also involve" by AK Sellan, and another one is "School gangsterism: Don't blame the teachers." by Darulzaman Bahri. Both of the articles can be read on website. 1.1 THE GISTS OF ARTICLE 1 SCHOOL GANGSTERISM. WHY BLAME STUDENTS WHEN SOME PARENTS ARE ALSO INVOLVE BY AK SELLAN 'Like father, like son', this saying is the most appropriate to the first article selected. The article is particularly about how much is parents' behaviour affecting their children's manner. A youtube video called "PIBG meeting ruckus at Shah Alam" shows us how some PIBG heads acting such as street thugs, running around the hall chasing another PIBG chairman trying to assault him just because of differences of idea. Street thugs are people that we can accept to have that kind of bad behaviour, but PIBG heads and chairman are expected to have a good manner. As the article quoted, "gangsters, sad to say, will breed gangster". S.Murali, the PIBG head or the Tun Sambanthan Tamil School at the SekolahWawasan Complex in USJ is the main antagonist in the ruckus. Murali is also claims to be the President of Tamil Schools Assosciation of Selangor. For that, he literally conquered the school. The other teachers were forced to obey him and even the headmaster was powerless. But sadly, there is nothing that they can do to stop Murali. In fact, many police reports were made against him, mostly by parents and teachers, but those parents and teachers had been threaten by Murali. So, the police reports did not work out. Murali was also said to have high political connections. He was an MIC member then, and was close to the top leadership at that time. That scenario shows us how powerful was Murali at that time. He was the administrator of the school. If the administrator is a gangster, what can we expect from the students?

2 1.2 THE GISTS OF ARTICLE 2 SCHOOL GANGSTERISM : DONT BLAME THE TEACHERS BY DARULZAMAN BAHRI Gangsterisms issue among the teenagers has becomes more and more serious each day. As parents play a big role to educate their children at home, teachers play a big role in educating their students at school. Both parties should play their role effectively and shall not waste their time accusing one another if things aren't turned out well. Second article selected by me is about how the responsibility to educate the children rest on the shoulder of a teacher alone. This article talks about how most of the parents take their responsibility for granted and tend to blame the teacher if their children couldn't make it to the top in their academic and attitude. For instant, when the school held a PIBG meeting, one could count the number of parents attending. Good results are the only thing matters most for the parents and public. Teachers and headmasters are to be blamed if the school result drops. What matters most for the public are the school should produces excellent academic achievement. Students' attitude comes second. This article also touches about how the politic influences the education. Children come from different kind of family background. One from a high class family background would be accepted and treated better. This must not happen. But it is something that happens for centuries. When will this kind of bias ends? No one knows. 1.3 REFLECTION OF THE ARTICLES SELECTED As i had mentioned above, gangsterism by far had not been taken seriously. People had in their mind that gangsterism is something natural due to the time shifting. As the world develops, teenagers become more open-minded and tend to be aggressive at the same time. But we can't blame the teenagers hundred percent. Parents, school administration, public, and government, each of them has responsibilities to stop gangsterism and at the same time, built a good manner and improve the academic achievements. But, apparently, academic achievements are the only thing matters to most of the parents and teachers. Some would say, it is alright if one student to have a bad attitude as long as his/her academic achievements were at a top level. Student with good attitude but can't score good results in examination would be looked down. This scenario happens everywhere. Top score students would get more attentions from the teachers.

3 Meanwhile, low score students left behind without monitor and some of them might turn into a school gangster. Perhaps it still makes sense to blame the teachers about the academic results, but doesn't it ridiculous if the teachers got blamed if the results are bad, and didn't get any thanks or appreciation if the results are well. Teacher has been looked down and underestimated for the failure to educate the kids and teenagers at school. Apparently, parents consider teacher as unreliable and not good enough at teaching their children due to the failure. But if the things are the other way round, does the teacher got an appreciation from the parents? Sad to say, teachers are always blamed when things turned bad, but given merely a straight face if things turned out well. But things are different for the parents. If one student is good at academic and manners, parents are the first to be praised. If one student is bad at academic or manners, parents are the first to be blamed. Good parents usually manage to produce good children. But good parents also tend to make mistake in educating their children. May the education methods are too soft, or too harsh. Some parents think that their educating methods are perfect but in fact they should learn more about how to educate their children with more appropriate and effective ways. Teenagers tend to rebel if the education methods from the parents are too harsh. A rebel child is one big problem. The child usually will do something bad in order to get his/her parents angry, such as being a gangster. One of the subject at school named "Pendidikan Sivik dan Kewarganegaraan" has been introduced at secondary schools in order to build good manners among the students. But apparently, the objective to produce a better individual through the subject seems to be a failure. Why is this happen? The answer is easy. Students thought that the subject is too general, quite boring and has no significance to them. The subject even didn't include as one of the subjects in Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM). Moreover, the students thought that the contents of the subject are all about manners and good attitudes, everything that they had known since they were little kids. There is no doubt if one say that every each of the students know what are good manners and attitudes, they can score well in the subject, but the thing is, some students refuse to practice a good manners and attitude. Simplicity, every student can get good marks in the examination for the subject, but in real life, not all of them can score good marks.

4 When we walk pass a primary school, we can see a group of adorable little kids with their school bag and an umbrella in their hand. Some people say that those adorable kids would turn into a school thug when they enter secondary school. Why would those people say that? Aren't the teachers either from primary and secondary school manages to teach them well manners during school time? It seems like teacher has been underestimated and blamed for the failure to educate the kids and teenagers at school. Parents are the main example and the best idol for the children. Children growing up watched how their parents behave. As for that, the tendency for the children to behave just the same way their parents are behave, is quite high. Simplicity, if the parents are gangster, will the son not becomes one? Of course there is still possibility. The son must be very assertive to be able to refuse to behave the way his parents are. Let put aside about the parents and teachers. Gangsterism among the teenagers are also caused by peer influence. Friends are one of the big influences to one teenager. Teenagers tend to follow the attitude of their friends. If they choose a right friend, then they are safe. Teenager is a state when one individual are very easy to be influenced. Be a friend with a gangster, one day, you will become one if you are not firm enough. Mass media also one of the big influences to the teenagers. Nowadays, Malaysian film industry produce lots of film about gangsterism such as KL Gangster, V3 Samseng Jalanan and many more. In fact, this film gives us a good lesson, but some teenagers didn't get the message. After watching the film, they want to be like the hero of the film. Become a gangster.

1.4 CONCLUSION There are still a lot to think and to do in order to overcome gangsterism among teenagers. All of the parties involved- parents, school administration, government and public have to coorperate and shall not accuse one another if things didn't turn out well. Both manners and academic achievements must be at the top level. Teenagers are the future generation that will lead the country one day. Gangsterism not only gives us trouble but also may set a bad image to our country. Gangsterism is not a culture. It is a disease that has to be stopped before it becomes more painful.

School gangsterism. Why blame students when some parents are also involve

By AK Sellan

DPM Muhyiddin Yassin mentioned last week that there should be no compromise on gangsterism in schools. He is quoted as having stated that A cime is a crime and should be punished accordingly. He also called upon parents and teachers to help the police combat this plague. Now, what should we do if the parents themselves are gangtsers as is the case of certain PTAs of Tamils schools in Selangor? After watching the video on YouTube called PIBG meeting ruckus at Shah Alamand hearing from people who attended the meeting last Saturday, it is clear that eliminating gangsterism in schools especially among Indian students is going to be a herculean task. Now if some PIBG heads are thugs, running around the hall trying to assault another PIBG chairman over differences of opinion, can we blame the children if they accept this as standard acceptable behaviour? Gangsters, sad to say, will breed gangsters. The main antagonist in the above fracas is S Murali, the PIBG head of the Tun Sambanthan Tamil school at the Sekolah Wawasan Complex in USJ. He also claims to be President of Tamil Schools Assosciation of Selangor.

7 Perhaps it's apt that the general non-Tamil speaking public be updated about what has been going on in SJK(T) Tun Sambanthan, USJ Subang that has many middle class families. I am fully aware of the situation as I had a child who had previously attended the Wawasan school. Murali was the PIBG chairman and he literally ruled the school. The headmaster was powerless and the teachers either obeyed or were forced to do so. He and his cohorts would walk into any class and berate any teacher in front of the students. No one dared to question him. Many police reports were made against this tough guy, Murali, mainly by parents and teachers of the Wawasan school. The school was his fiefdom and any dissent against his rule was neutralised either by phone calls threatening physical assault or a transfer to other schools. Many teachers have been transferred, even HMs. One teacher who was slightly courageous had an anonymous phone call describing exactly which apartment she stayed in and was told if she refused to play ball, she could be raped and thrown out of the balcony. The police reports did not amount to anything as he was said to have high political connections then. S Murali was an MIC member then and was close to the top leadership at that time. His background as a tough guy went well with how MIC was managed. His services were called upon to manage MIC and MAIKA AGMs. He and his band of tough guys together with other muscle men provided by other tough guys would always ensure that meetings were managed well. Then Murali had a fallout with Samy Vellu. This was among other things due to Muralis assault of T Mohan, the current MIC youth chief, a blue eyed boy of Samy. The fissure widened and in 2007, the PTA of the school was suspended under the request of Samy Vellu. Murali was out in the cold having been stripped of his fiefdom.. But just before 2008 elections, this MIC BN discard switched parties to Keadilan but did not switch his ways. He continued to be the tough guy. Somehow, he and his cohorts managed to revive the PTA in 2009 and elections were held. This time there was competition for the post of chairman of the PTA including from a lady. This lady candidate, just before the elections, was assaulted with curry powder. Who was responsible was never established. The fracas that broke out at the SUK hall on Saturday during the Selangor Tamil schools meeting was clearly pre-arranged with many outsiders who were brought in to

8 the scene. What was supposed to be an intelligent dialogue denigrated into a shouting match and resulted in another PTA chairman assaulted by Murali and his men. Many of those who were near the podium in the video claimed to be Pakatan members. It appears that Pakatan leaders condone such behaviour by allowing their pogrammes and initiatives derailed by their own kind. The party members lack discipline. Voters will be most shocked to see blatant thuggish behaviour in the name of education. All this is being narrated to raise the basic question - If the PTA head himself is a gangster, how is the school going to prevent gangsterism? This, the government, in this case the Pakatan government, must answer as the culprit here is their party man. The video clearly indicates assault and rioting. As our DPM had said, a crime is a crime and there should be no compromise. I hope Muhiyiddin would authorise a full scale investigation into the affairs of the Wawasan Tun Sambanthan Tamil school especially with regards to all those police reports made previously. Teachers and parents will have their prayers answered to the tyranny they have endured for so long. We cannot continue tolerating a reign of terror in schools. It does not matter if they are students or parents or for that matter whether they are Pakatan or BN. Gangsterism in schools has to be eliminated.

School gangsterism: Don't blame the teachers

Darulzaman Bahri 7:42AM Sep 9, 2003

The blame for incidences of bullying, ragging and gangsterism in our schools should not rest on the headmasters alone. Running a school is a collective effort - the headmaster, his assistants, teachers, the school board, parents and the community at large must work together. While the headmaster provides the leadership, the rest too, have certain role to play in the educational processes of the children. The sad thing about our education system is the public and parents tend to take a 'tak ada apa' attitude towards the education of our children. They feel that education is the work of the headmasters and teachers concern, and they must not be involved in such operation. For example, when the schools conduct their annual PTA meetings, one could count the number of parents attending such a meeting. I remember on one occasion during a PTA meeting at my son's school, only five parents attended. For the parents and the public, results matter most. If the school results drop, than the teachers and headmasters are to be blamed. The Education Department sometimes feel the same. The annual announcement by the minister on schools with the best results and the best students etc, only

10 goes to prove that what matters most for the Education Ministry are the schools which produce excellent academic performance. While admission to residential schools is based on meritocracy but how far this is being practised? The sad thing is that about 20 percent to 30 percent of students admitted to residential schools enter by the back door, just because they are the children of some datuk or politician or corporate figure or some elite group. In the case of MCKK, some say that there exists a quota system where certain percentage of places are allocated to certain groups of the society. No wonder the discipline in MCKK and some residential schools has deteriorated severely. Clearly, the children of these elite groups are "untouchable" by the school authorities and if they did, the teachers and headmaster would be on the transfer list. While Bakri Musa's assessment of the role of headmasters in our schools system may resonate in some areas, it horrendous for him to suggest that the headmaster and their assistants failed in their duty in checking bullying, and gangsterism in these institutions. Unless and until the admission policy can be revamp and the school authorities given full power to initiate disciplinary action without fear or favour from the so-called cronies or the ministry itself, there will very little hope for changes. These residential schools must be open only to the potentially best students not to the children of cronies or political figures.

11 Education must not be influence by politics. But, in Malaysia politics and education is like "isi dengan kuku", and it is not surprising that the blame will always fall on the headmasters and teachers. Please don't blame the headmasters and teachers. The parents, the public, the community and the Education Department must also share the blame.
