Principles of Psychology Conditioning & Learning Activity Sheet Instructions: In the examples that follow, identify the classical

conditioning elements: UCS, UCR, CS & CR. You may also identify any other conditioning principles that you notice (if applicable). 1. While a child rides in a car over a dilapidated bridge, his father makes jokes about the bridge collapsing and all of them falling into the river below. The father finds this funny and so decides to do it whenever they cross the bridge. The child now becomes hysterical whenever they have to cross the bridge. Years later, the child has grown up and is afraid to drive over any bridge.

2. BMW is advertising its new 2011 model, and executes an ad campaign with the
intention of reaching males. The ads and billboards feature a very attractive, sensually attired young woman lying across the bonnet of the automobile.

3. A student has asthma and has suffered attacks in English class because the room is
poorly ventilated. Now the student has begun to experience asthmatic symptoms whenever the period for English class approaches.

4. Han moves into a new apartment. Soon afterward, he is taking a shower when he
hears his son flush the toilet and the water suddenly becomes extremely hot, causing him to jump. After a few flushings during his showers, Han notices a change in his behavior: He jumps and experiences fear whenever he hears a toilet flushing.

5. Becca thought her fish were boring. They became active when she fed them; but the
rest of the time, all they did was hide behind rocks or sit at the bottom of the tank. So she decided that when she fed the fish, she would tap on the cover of the aquarium. After pairing the tapping with the feeding for several weeks, Becca found that when she tapped on the cover, the fish swam to the top of the aquarium and were very active.

6. Luis came down with a stomach virus one day last month. For dinner that night, he
ate lasagna. The next morning, he was extremely sick to his stomach. He now starts to feel sick to his stomach if he just smells lasagna.

7. You have had several painful experiences with the dentist's drill. Now, your stomach
starts to hurt when you are simply sitting in the lobby waiting for your name to be called.

8. Your boyfriend (or girlfriend) used to wear a very unique cologne. Even though you broke up 6 months ago, you still get a warm feeling on the rare occasion when you smell the cologne on a stranger.

Instructions: Apply appropriate operant conditioning contingencies (PR, NR, PP, or NP) to the following scenarios. Ie. How can you apply positive reinforcement? Negative reinforcement? Positive punishment? Negative punishment?

1. Your husband/brother refuses to put his socks and shoes away neatly when he comes home from work. He usually leaves them sprawled in the middle of the living room.

2. You want your child to do homework as soon as she gets home in the evenings,
before playing, watching TV or doing chores.

3. An employer has a problem with his employees being tardy (late) for work. He asks you for some suggestions to remedy the problem.

4. A teacher needs suggestions concerning how to improve discipline and/or


performance among her 4th grade students
