Volumetric Analysis- Acid/Base Titration Using Indicators

Your SRS serves as your "Laboratory Notebook", where original and permanent record of your work is kept, and required to submit your SRS with your completed assignment every week. However, since you will be completing your calculation/analysis on Excel Spreadsheet, you are not required to complete your SRS (Your TA will only check your "collected data" to prove your work) unless otherwise noted in the "Assignment Instruction".

Part I: Standardization of NaOH Solution

-Dealing with Significant Figures
Enter your data (Numerical Values ONLY. Do not inclue unit.) into the following table "Taburated Data". Then, Format each cell to show correct significant figures. See Excel Instruction - "Adjusting Significant Figures in Excel" on WebCT for the detailed instructions. You may omit any trial you didn't perform.

Tabulated Data Mass KHP (g) Initial buret reading NaOH (mL) Final buret reading NaOH (mL)

Trial 1 0.3499 0.00 35.59

Trial 2 0.3881 0.00 40.10

Trial 3

Remember the following rules about Significant Figures in our Lab

Graduated Cylinder - Decimal Place is 1 Thermometer - Decimal Place is 1 (eg. 24.3 Volumetric Pipet - Decimal Place is 2 (eg. 10.00 mL) Buret - Decimal Place is 2 (eg. 34.64 mL) Analytical Balance - Decimal Place is 4 ~ 5 (eg. 15.1538 or 15.15383g) *You can read to 2nd decimal on some graduated cylinder

"Unit" is already supplied in each category, so input only numerical values here.

-Mathematical Calculation Directly on Excel

Using the data you just entered above, complete the following table "Tabulated Results". You should complete this section by calculating directly on this spreadsheet using Excel. No calculator is allowed. See Excel Instruction - "Calculations in Excel 1" on WebCT for the detailed instructions.

Useful Units MW* of KHP (g/mol)

*MW=Molecular Weight

204.22

It's a great idea to list any "Literature Value" that you need to use in your calculation. Note that KHP is "potassium hydrogen phthalate" (KHC8H4O4)

Tabulated Results Volume used NaOH (mL) Moles KHP Moles NaOH in dispensed volume Molarity NaOH solution (M) Average Molarity of NaOH (M)

Trial 1 35.59 0.001713 0.001713 0.04814 0.047765

Trial 2 40.1 0.001900 0.001900 0.04739

Trial 3

"Hint" The formula for the Moles KHP =E28/$D$45 "$" is placed so that cell D45 (MW of KHP) is fixed and won't move when you "Click" "Hold" & "Drag to the right" to complete the calculation for the rest of trials. See Excel Instruction - "Calculations in Excel 1" for more detailed instructions.

Input only numerical values here. Be sure to show appropriate Sig. Fig. Acid:Base ratio between KHP and NaOH is 1:1. You needed certain amount of NaOH to react with known moles of KHP, thus moles of NaOH in the dispensed volume should be? Remember, Molarity (M) is moles per Liter

Part II: Titration of Diluted Vinegar

Now, utilize the techniques that you have learned so far, complete the following tables according to your obtained laboratory data. Be sure to calculate directly on this spreadsheet (No calculator) and adjust the decimal place that correct significant figures are shown for each value. Refer to the section "Reporting Data Accuracy Figures" on your manual regarding Sig. Fig. rules upon basic calculations (+ , - , and ).

Use the pipet-calibration result. It is NOT 10.00mL

"diluted vinegar" = Acetic acid solution that you made by diluting stock vinegar with water in a volumetric flask. This is the one you titrated. "stock vinegar" = Original vinegar (undiluted) in stock container.
