Concept BaLA Design Ideas and their relationship with Core Learning Areas Visuals for BaLA intervention Design basis and way forward Annexure 1: Table of Spacewise and Gradewise BaLA ideas with costs Annexure 2: Example of assembling BaLA ideas in a class.

Developed for Department of Education, GNCTD by Vinys, Centre for Architectural Research & Design, New Delhi

1. CONCEPT
What is BaLA ?
BaLA is a way to holistically plan and use the school infrastructure. It incorporates the ideas of activity based learning, child friendliness and inclusive education for children with special needs (CWSN). At the core, it assumes that the architecture of school can be a resource for the teaching-learning processes. There are two levels of this intervention: 1. Develop the SPACES to create varied teaching-learning situations 2. Develop the BUILT ELEMENTS in these spaces as teaching-learning aids

2. BaLA Design Ideas and their relationship with Core Learning Areas
This section will help the school teachers and the Principals to take decision to identify BaLA ideas based on the pedagogical needs in their respective schools. These are grouped according to Subjects and Topics for ease of selection. Note:
Visuals of various ideas are given in a sequential form in section 3, Visuals for BaLA intervention. The Grade-wise listing of BaLA ideas in classroom, corridor and outdoor is given in Annexure 1. These are given in a sequential form. It also gives indicative costs. To get an overall idea of how the BaLA ideas will appear in a typical classroom, see drawings in annexure II. Use the numbers given in parenthesis e.g.(23) to identify the idea from sequence in section 3 or Annexure.

The Spaces can be

Classroom Corridor Steps Outdoor space Floor Wall Window Door Ceiling Platform

The Built Elements can be

BaLA is about innovatively treating the space and the built elements to make the existing school architecture more resourceful with higher educational value in a child friendly manner.

But, why BaLA?

It Lets school be conceived in a holistic way Makes the school a child friendly place Can be introduced in existing and new school Makes school an exciting place, allowing learning with fun Creates conducive self-learning situations for children Can help creating inclusive learning spaces and provisions spaces for Children With Special Needs (CWSN) Allows learning materials accessible to children, at all times TLM cannot be stolen or misplaced and can remain orderly Teachers can adapt them to suit their specific needs Is more lasting and durable Can be combined with building repairs and upgradation

Each

4. Design Basis and way forward

school should plan for intervention with its specific needs, limitations and potential.

These design ideas were developed with an in-depth understanding of childrens

Spatial aspirations from their school Natural behavioural patterns in school space Need for facilitation of all round growth and development Problematic areas of comprehension in teaching and learning Socio-cultural-educational background at home Need for literacy environment And a detailed study of repair, environment enhancement and construction issues of the school building components

Taking design ideas to the ground.

With coordinated action by the school principals, teachers and others, this can be made operational with Vidyalaya Kalyan Samiti (VKS) funds. Each school will have to undertake the following steps: Make an overall school development plan with keeping in mind future needs of classrooms, toilets, other spaces. Properly decide the seating plan for all classes. This cannot be changed later, since BaLA ideas are class and grade specific. Identify all potential spaces (classrooms, corridors and other circulation spaces, outdoors), where BaLA ideas can be made. Plan to work in phases, i.e. if presently Rs 2 lakhs is available, only part of the overall plan will be developed. Next year, with another 2 lakh, next phase of work can be taken up. Undertake basic repair of floor, plaster, lights, sanitation and plumbing, seepage / dampness, etc. first before starting BaLA work. Go through the document and decide, which BaLA elements the school needs on priority. Accordingly, decide and make the them with the available grant.

CONCLUSIONS

1. Maximising educational value of built structure.

Built structure of the school has a dual use: To give shelter to the educational activities To be a learning. resource for teachingshould be maximum

School building architecture optimally made to derive educational value.

Planning for school with interdisciplinary approach

Any design intervention in the school must focus on children for design, implementation and maintenance. Teachers must be the facilitators in ensuring the use of these interventions. School administrators and teachers should be oriented and trained towards effective use of available.
