L&T works, Mysore for inspection of Grid Isolation relays

Purpose : Inspection of Grid isolation relays in L&T, Mysore. Venue : M/s. L&T works, KIADB Industrial Estate, Mysore.

Duration : 3rd , 4th and 5th July,2000. Inspection of Grid isolation relays M/s. L&T have offered a relay based solution for proper isolation of Grid from our Captive power plant during disturbances in the grid. The grid disturbances are in the form of voltage fluctuation, frequency variation and grid power failures. The offered solution consists of programmable relays type UFD34 (Multifunction frequency ) and MW33 (Power Management relay) . M/s. L&T offered the above relays for inspection at their mysore works. The above relays were tested and the test results are enclosed in the Annexure (Refer Minutes of meeting ) Testing of UFD 34: The above relay is primarily used to detect the frequency/voltage disturbances like Under frequency, Over frequency and Rate of change of frequency (df/dt) etc. and the voltage disturbances like under / over voltage and rate of change of voltage (dv/dt) in the grid. The relay was tested for the under frequency, df/dt, under voltage and dv/dt protections. The following test set up was used for testing the above relay.

Signal generator

70mV variable freq.

12V Amplifier

63.5V UFD34 relay

Oscilloscope

While testing the df/dt protections the relay often picks up at threshold and near threshold value of the settings. The relay is said to be picking up because of the transients during the switching operation of the test set up. Hence pure df/dt protection cannot be used for detecting the frequency disturbances as the same may lead to spurious tripping during minor grid disturbances. Instead this protection can be combined with the under frequency element of the relay to achieve greater stability for the system. Testing of MW33: This relay is used for protecting the system against active/ reactive power, Low power factor both in forward and reverse directions of the power flow. The relay also has normal under/over frequency protections. The relay can be effectively used to protect our system against the reverse power during grid power failures. The relay has adjustable power and time settings, which can be used for controlling the export of power from our Captive power plant to the TNEB grid. The test set up and the test results are give n in the Annexure (Refer Minutes of meeting between M/s. SPIC and M/s. L&T). MS COM Software: M/s. L&T also demonstrated the Relay communication software MS COM. The above software can be used to program the relay settings and to configure the output relays for tripping the breaker. However programming of the relay settings and output relay configuration can also be done through the push buttons available in the front panel of the relays without the above software. Inspection of Grid isolation Relay at M/s. ICL sugars, K.R Pet, Mysore: The UFD 34 (Multifunction frequency relay) relay was installed at M/s. ICL (India Cements Ltd.) Sugars factory at K.R. Pet near Mysore by M/s. L&T for isolation of their Co-generation (Capacity 2X6 MW STGs.) plant during the grid disturbances in KSEB. It is understood that the above isolation scheme has been in line for just over a month since its installation in April2000. The plant is under annual shut down since June2000 for this period is an off season for cane crushing. During the above period of one month the relay has detected the grid disturbance once and isolated their generation from KSEB. M/s. ICL sugars are satisfied with the performance of the relay. The available settings of the relay and the connection diagram for the above scheme are given in annexure.
