Vineyard prepares for new season

The spring season means
preparation for the regrowth of
the crops at Valenzano Winery.
The staff recently finished
pruning the vineyard for the an-
nual regrowth of grapes.
In April, there are two to three
weeks when buds breakthrough,
beginning the new crop.
Unlike classic agricultural
farms, wineries dont sow new
seeds each year. Rather, when
new varietals are added to a se-
lection of wine, vines are raised
from stock.
It depends on what is being
planted, but well buy 2- to 3-year-
old vine stock 12-inches in size.

Valenzano said. The first year is
spent training that vine, well get
a light crop and drop it in order to
establish the crop. By 2015, we
should have a good crop.
Last season, approximately 60
percent of the crops suffered from
late frost in May. The winery
owns 88 acres of land, 24 of which
have numerous types of grapes,
including concord, the type best
known for jelly production and
Valenzanos Shamong Red. The
remaining 64-acres are leased for
non-commercial pumpkin and
hay production.
Despite yielding 120 tons of
grapes, Valenzanos purchases
grapes from local wineries, in-
cluding Bellview in Landisville.
If they have a surplus of fruit
we buy it up, Valenzano said.
Theres a big demand for our
wines. We dont have any surplus,
so were looking for other farms to
grow for us.
According to Valenzano, their
winery is one of the biggest pur-
chasers of fruit in the state.
Blueberries are acquired from
companies in Hammonton and
Millers Farm in Tabernacle.
Cranberries for both red and
white cranberry wines are pur-
chased from Lee Brothers Inc. in
Chatsworth.
We were the first people to
start making cranberry wine.
White cranberries are really hard
to get. We have cranberry bogs
grown just for us, Valenzano
said.
One hundred acres are utilized
off-site for the production of fruit
for the winery.
The winery is included in the
Outer Coastal Plain, an indicator
of the region, comparable to Napa
Valley or Sonoma Valley.
There are more than 30 winer-
ies and commercial vineyards in
the Outer Coastal Plain American
Viticulture Area. The region is lo-
cated between Philadelphia and
the Jersey Shore with more than
2.25 million acres in the heart of
South Jersey suited to growing
dozens of wine varietals, accord-
ing to Vintage South Jersey, part
of the South Jersey Tourism
Corp.
Its a designated area for grow-
ing grapes. When most people see
Napa Valley on a label, it usually
means its a quality wine. Its sim-
ilar for the Outer Coastal Plain,
but that means more putting out
good wines and building the repu-
tation, Valenzano said.
The vineyard produces half a
million bottles of wine per year,
according to winemaker Michael
Jones.
The wine is made at the time of
harvest.
Well pick grapes that day and
crush them or press them depend-
ing on red or white, we dont let
them sit that day, Jones said.
The moderate spring and sum-
mer climate of South Jersey
mixed with the sandy soil compo-
sition is a good combination for
grape production.
It depends on the grape, but
some like more moisture. We like
it to be temperate with constant
rains, not heavy rains, Jones
said.
Traditionally, its a well-
drained soil where were at. If we
do get a lot of rain, its not like the
plants are just sitting in water.
The biggest concern is how much
sun you have and the last frost of
winter, Valenzano said.
When this years crop is ready,
it will be harvested and crushed
for the production of wine.
Valenzanos yields 40,000 cases
of wine each year, according to
Jones.
Were a family business. We
make wines for all tastes, we
dont exclude anybody, Valen-
zano said.

Junior Tour is offering a
team sports approach to
golf in South Jersey this
Spring through PGA Jun-
ior League Golf. PGA Jun-
ior League Golf brings
juniors into the game in
an exciting new way, fos-
tering a sense of sports-
manship and teamwork
typically associated with
other recreational team
sports. Teams consist of
youngsters ages 9 to 13,
with no previous playing
experience required.
Much like other recre-
ational league sports,
PGA Junior League Golf
participants receive team
uniforms with jersey
numbers. Rosters are co-
ed with competitions
being two-person scram-
bles, which reinforces the
team concept and limits
the pressure on any one
player. Coaches can sub-
stitute players every three
holes so all of the 10 to 12
golfers on each team can
participate.
Teams play regular sea-
son matches throughout
the first part of the season
before convening for city,
sectional and regional
championships. Each re-
gional champion, along
with the host region team,
advance to a national
championship held in the
fall.
We are excited to cre-
ate a PGA Junior Golf
League for our local jun-
ior golfers, said Brad
Hare, PGA Professional.
It allows us to introduce
the game of golf to young
boys and girls in a fun,
team-oriented setting and
enhances the experience
of competitive golf with
juniors. This program
will have a big impact on
junior golf in our area.
The PGA of America
brought the team golf
concept to select facilities
across the country in
2012. More than 1,800
young golfers competed
on more than 120 teams in
22 markets throughout
June and July. Modeled
after Little League Base-
ball, PGA Junior League
Golf introduces children
to the game of golf in a
team setting. Parents also
play an active role, mak-
ing the program a family
activity to create another
generation of players to
enjoy the game.

Homestead Benefit Program changes
The Division of Taxation up-
dated its information on the cur-
rent year (2011) Homestead Bene-
fit Program.
Most eligible homeowners will
receive their 2011 homestead ben-
efit as a credit applied to property
tax bills in August.
Those homeowners who either
sold their home prior to filing the
homestead benefit application, or
whose principal residence was a
unit in a co-op or continuing care
retirement community will be is-
sued a benefit in the form of a
check or direct deposit in August.
Tenants will not receive a 2011
rebate. The deadline for filing
2011 applications was Dec. 14.

with free home security surveys
Sheriff Jean Stanfield an-
nounced that her department has
received a new infusion of grant
dollars to assist Burlington Coun-
tys senior citizens in securing
their homes against crime, fire
and power outages.
Stanfield said that the Home
Security Program now is accept-
ing applications to provide sen-
iors and individuals with disabili-
ties free home security surveys
and safety modifications.
Our technicians provide a top-
to-bottom survey and, where nec-
essary, can install at no charge a
number of security items, includ-
ing door and window locks, peep
holes, and smoke and carbon
monoxide detectors, Stanfield
said.
It also gives us the opportuni-
ty to make them aware of the
most common and latest frauds
and scams, said Stanfield.
This is a totally free program
and really, one that every older
resident should take advantage
of.
Interested residents should call
(609) 265-5796 to register. To quali-
fy, at least one person in the
household must be 60 years of
age or older.
Other security/safety items
that may be installed free of
charge include reflective house
numbers, lamp timers, power
failure lights, and med-info
packets which provide emer-
gency responders with important
medical information about the
residents.
Stanfield said the program has
been in operation for more than
20 years and typically serves 300
homeowners a year.
In addition, the programs
crime prevention specialists are
available to give home security
workshops and presentations to
clubs, churches, and civic and
community groups.
The program is being funded
with $48,992 in pass-through
grant funds, provided by the
countys Office on Aging.

ts hard to believe that three
months have passed since the
tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary
School in Newtown, Conn. It was a hor-
rific day in our nations history, a day
that seemed to get worse by the minute
as more details surfaced about what
exactly happened, and how many lives
were lost.
The death of 20 children and six edu-
cators at the hands of a madman
raised questions of community, gun
control and school security. Should we
be doing more to protect our children?
If we cant feel safe when we leave
them at school, where can we feel safe?
Last week, Janet Robinson, the
school superintendent in the Newtown
school district, spoke to more than 200
state school administrators at the New
Jersey Association of School Adminis-
trators School Security Conference on
the topic.
Robinsons keynote address was
closed to the public, but in a follow-up
press conference, she made one strik-
ing statement:
There isnt a lot we could have done
differently.
Sadly, shes right. Stricter gun laws
wouldnt necessarily have prevented
the tragedy. Better mental health sup-
port wouldnt necessarily have stopped
the gunman. Tighter security wouldnt
necessarily have saved the lost lives.
As school districts in our area are fi-
nalizing 2013-2014 budgets, and as
school administration teams are evalu-
ating security measures, its important
to remember that, sometimes, theres
just not much we can do.
Schools should do everything in
their power to provide the best possible
security at the best possible cost. Tech-
nological advances provide our district
with a terrific opportunity to enhance
security in an all-encompassing, cost-
effective way.
But districts need to increase securi-
ty with the students psyches in mind.
What message are we sending if we re-
quire metal detectors, security escorts
and full-body searches for everyone
who enters a school building?
Robinson warned against just that
last week when she said: I think as a
reaction, people do overreach. They
want too many guarantees. They want
to turn our schools into fortresses.
The tragedy at Sandy Hook Elemen-
tary should not be understated, and
will never be forgotten, even here in
New Jersey, two states away.
As we remember that day and, more
importantly, the families who lost
loved ones, lets remember that our
schools need to protect our kids both
physically and mentally.

County group assists with energy aggregate contracts
Freeholder Director Joe Donnelly re-
cently announced that he has called upon
the Burlington County Bridge Commission
to provide technical assistance to munici-
palities that are considering community-
wide energy aggregate contracts to pro-
cure utility bill savings for their residents
and businesses.
In addition, said Donnelly, he has
reached out to Commission Chairman
John B. Comegno II, and asked that the
commission evaluate as well the merits for
a county-wide or multi-town energy aggre-
gate program, to determine if such an
arrangement, if found to be feasible, could
generate even greater savings to homeown-
ers.
State deregulation has opened the door
for aggregate energy contracts, and recent
media reports suggest that we could be
looking at significant savings for every res-
ident and business in the county, said
Donnelly.
Donnelly noted that the freeholder
board has already partnered with the com-
mission on the Greenbacks to Go Green
program, a shared services initiative that
has assisted some five dozen towns and
schools in securing tax-saving energy up-
grades to their public facilities, often with
state grant dollars.
According to media reports, Plumstead
Township in Ocean County is the first and
only municipality in New Jersey to engage
in an aggregate contract. Estimates are
that this will result in annual savings of
approximately $165 per customer.
As we are all rapidly learning, many
companies are now soliciting community
energy aggregation, and have approached
several of our towns, he said.
Municipalities are rightfully assessing
this cautiously, and we can assist them
in their assessment, again at no cost to
them.
By the same token, we need to deter-
mine if this is a shared service worth con-
sidering under a larger, county umbrella,
especially if it means a better return on
the utility bill for every resident and busi-
ness in the county.

Seneca High School senior
Colin Lubner uses golf to give
back to children who may not be
able to afford to play.
In the summer, Lubner works
at Medford Lakes Country Club.
Two summers ago, he noticed an
abundance of mismatched, un-
claimed clubs.
People lose clubs and they just
sit there, Lubner said. I spent a
lot of time in the bag room and
noticed they just accumulate over
the summer.
He asked his boss if he could
take them home to clean and send
out.
Lubner made calls to other
country clubs in the area, asking
for unclaimed clubs.
My dad and I picked up the
clubs, Lubner said. I made a
connection to First Tee in Philly,
which gives back to economically
disadvantaged children.
According to First Tees web-
site, the program is an interna-
tional youth development organi-
zation introducing the game of
golf and its inherent values to
young people through after-
school and in-school programs.
First Tee reinforces integrity, re-
spect and perseverance through
the game of golf.
I had a conversation with a
member who works with them,
and I thought it would be a good
idea to donate to them, Lubner
said.
Lubner continues to collect
clubs.
Currently, he has 75 prepared
for First Tee. He plans to collect
more before bringing them to
First Tee.
I collect one to two clubs per
day at the country club, Lubner
said.
He has donated 250 clubs to the
organization in the last two years.
What hes doing for disadvan-
taged children, bringing them
into the sport of golf, is really
nice. I know a lot of players that
are selfish, and its great to see
him doing this, Seneca golf
coach Scott Glossner said.
Lubner began playing golf at a
young age and currently leads the
Golden Eagles golf team as cap-
tain, a title he earned his sopho-
more year.
According to Glossner, Lubner
has started all four years.
Hes improved every year and
during the off-season. Hes a hard
worker in the classroom and on
the course, Glossner said. Its
nice his teammates have someone
with his leadership ability. I can
definitely count on him.
Senecas golf season recently
began.
The team competes in 20
matches, including five tourna-
ments.
Im optimistic about this
years team. I think if we really
focus and practice hard well do
well, Lubner said.
Lubner is Senecas class of 2013
valedictorian.
With golf, I can balance school
work and really focus, Lubner
said.
Hes applied to multiple univer-
sities, including Princeton, Dart-
mouth, Cornell and Columbia.
Hes already been accepted to Col-
gate University.
Lubner has not been recruited
to play golf for any teams, but
hopes to walk on and possibly se-
cure a spot to continue his com-
petitive career.
Hes one of the brightest gen-
tlemen Ive encountered, Gloss-
ner said.
Hes somebody people can
look at and say, I want my kids to
turn out like him.
Lubner encourages golfers to
donate their clubs when theyre
finished with them. He has been
using the same clubs for years,
but would like to donate them in
the future when the opportunity
arises.
Hes a great young man. Im
sure his parents are very proud of
him, Glossner said.

Brush pickup set for April 1
The Shamong Public Works De-
partment will be completing a
brush pickup the week of April 1.
Officials understand that with
the recent hurricane that many of
you will have brush to be collect-
ed. If you would like to request
free wood chips for your yard,
please call (609) 268-2377 ext. 304
or send an e-mail to bvalen-
zano@shamong.net.
The township will deliver free
wood chips to those who request
them on a first-come first-served
basis. Due to new state guide-
lines, the Shamong Township
Public Works Department will go
through the township one time
only the week of April 1 picking
up brush that has been left prop-
erly in the township right of way.
Please follow the rules listed
below to ensure your brush is
picked up.
Brush cannot be larger than
six inches in diameter nor less
than four feet in length. All brush
must be tied with twine in bun-
dles of no more than 60 pounds.
No firewood length 12" to 24" or
longer than eight feet in length
will be accepted.
Leaves cannot be included in
the brush bundles. The chipper
does not grind the leaves and the
township has no place to dispose
of the leaves. The township can-
not chip lumber, railroad ties,
building material, telephone
poles, or fence posts. Any bundles
containing these materials will be
rejected.
Please be considerate of our
employees and do not place any
poison ivy or briars in the brush
piles. Severe allergic reactions
are possible. Any bundles con-
taining these items will be reject-
ed. Decaying and excessively brit-
tle branches cannot be chipped
and will be rejected.
Rejected piles will not be con-
sidered. Please remember, brush
pick-up is provided as a free serv-
ice to residents who are cleaning
up the yard around their house. It
is not to remove bushes, stumps,
trees, and other debris resulting
from plant removal, lot clearing,
pool installation, construction,
addition, new decks, etc. If you
would like to have wood chips
dumped at your property during
the brush pick-up period, please
contact the township at (609) 268-
2377 ext. 304.
